Number S39: Utopia the Lightning
- #YZ08-EN001
3 Level 5 LIGHT monsters
You can also Xyz Summon this card by using a Rank 4 "Utopia" monster you control as the Xyz Material. (Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on this card.) Cannot be used as an Xyz Material for an Xyz Summon. If this card battles, your opponent cannot activate cards or effects until the end of the Damage Step. Once per Chain, during damage calculation in either player's turn, if this card battles an opponent's monster while this card has a "Utopia" Xyz Monster as Xyz Material: You can detach 2 Xyz Materials from this card; this card's ATK becomes 5000 during that damage calculation only.

Number S39: Utopia the Lightning
Shall we review the short list of extra deck beaters
in days gone by? The first that I can remember was
using Metamorphosis to dip into a then-unlimited
toolbox of fusions, based on what was needed. And up
until Metamorphosis was rightly banned forever, that
toolbox included beasts like Dark Balter the
Terrible (this monster would STILL be amazing if it
could be easily summoned. How crazy is that?),
Thousand-Eyes Restrict, Fiend Skull Dragon and then
later the Cyber Dragon fusions. Remember Metal
Reflex Slime into Cyber End? Freakin’ awesome! Then
along came synchros, and our first beatstick was Mr.
Gaia Knight, the Force of Earth. What about XYZ
monsters? Well, it was Gem Knight Pearl and then
Acid Golem.
What am I getting at? Well, 15 spaces in the extra
deck aren’t always used up, surprisingly, or maybe
unsurprisingly. And when you have room and level 4
monsters, these days your number one option is
adding in Number S39: Utopia the Lightning. But
don’t get me wrong. Number S39 is obviously way
better than simple beaters like Gaia and Pearl, but
there’s really no point to him other than to have
him available as a finisher or to get over big
bosses, and you only add him when you can spare
room. Utopia decks never really reached a pinnacle
as its own archetype, but this 2-card extra deck
engine has proven to be invaluable and even feared.
This monster is the zenith of the extra deck beater,
and based on what I’ve seen, there’s no reason to
suspect it would be banned. But 5000 ATK and
prevention of effects during battle should ensure
its relevance in tournament play for a very long
time. Its future potential, therefore, is at
maximum, especially for a monster related to the
main character of the one of the anime arcs. More
Utopia support along the way might just be
inevitable.

It's monsters like this that should allow
Construct to come back. Number S39: Utopia the
Lightning is easy to XYZ Summon and basically
destroys anything it attacks at least once.
Construct at least didn't cause Life Point loss when
it destroyed bosses with her effect. Utopia the
Lightning has OTK potential with that boost to 5000
Atk. Plus it looks awesome.

Looks like we haven't looked at this particular
version of Utopia. How many are there now--37?
Let's see, Light, Warrior, Rank 5...2500-2000
(familiar enough, but weak for a Rank 5) let alone
one that requires three XYZ Material, specifically
of the Light attribute, in this case. Well,
for a plus, and I use the term 'plus' marginally,
you can use a Rank 4 Utopia as XYZ Material.
(Some of these are good, some of these are bad, and
most of the Utopia variants flirt in the meh range,
so there we go). So, first, you can't use this
to XYZ Summon something else. Probably not
important long run, but still a crappy, and
unnecessary restriction. If this card is
involved in Battle, your opponent can't respond with
a card or effect until the end of the Damage Step.
Familiar enough, so that's boring, but nice enough,
I suppose. If this card battles, you can
detach two XYZ material to make this card have 5000
attack during Damage Calculation only. OH, but
it HAS to have Utopia Material on it.
Honestly, the card might be (more?) worth playing if
not for that. This card is trying to do too
much, and not enough, at the same time. Just
leave this card alone.
