Metaion, the Timelord
- #PHSW-EN098

Cannot be Special Summoned from the Deck. If you control no monsters, you can Normal Summon this card without Tributing. Cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects. You take no battle damage from attacks involving this Attack Position card. At the end of the Battle Phase, if this card attacked or was attacked: Return as many monsters on the field as possible to the hand (other than this card), and if you do, inflict 300 damage to your opponent for each card returned. During your Standby Phase: Shuffle this card into the Deck.

Metaion, the Timelord

Being the oldest of the Timelords (released in 2011 in the TCG), Metaion is clearly burdened by an effect he probably wouldn’t have had if he had been released in 2017. While Zaphion shuffles all the spells and traps your opponent controls, Metaion shuffles all monsters, even your own. And that’s too bad, because it really hinders the potential for the archetype as a whole.

Do I recommend running him? Sure, but probably only at 1 or maybe 2, joining the toolbox of other Timelords I’ve been recommending. He’s obviously devastating in a pinch, especially when you’re facing the gauntlet and you have him or a Time Maiden in hand. But you can’t swarm with Metaion, unlike his brothers. And maybe that’s a necessary control to keep the theme from being overpowered, but when has that stopped Konami before?

Hello Pojo Fans,

It's Throwback Thursday and we're showcasing the original Timelord himself: Metaion, the Timelord

A Side Deck and often-timed tech Main Deck piece, Metaion sweeps the field clean of all your opponents monsters, then on top of that does burn damage: 300LP for each. This was the card you wanted to see when your opponent committed everything to the field. You weren't going to take battle damage, it couldn't be destroyed by card effects, and it cycled itself back to be used again at your next Standby Phase. It put all Extra Deck monsters back to the deck, high level monsters back to the hand, this card was the bees knees when you were in trouble. It is still a good card to use in the current format of swarming archetypes like True Draco, True King and Zoodiacs. It was best to use this card against all Extra Deck monsters as to not give your opponent any second uses of monsters from the Main Deck. As it doesn't destroy the monsters you (most of the time) avoided giving your opponent any pluses off their monsters leaving the field.

It remains one of the best Timelord monsters, the only one challenging it would be Zaphion.

Metaion, the Timelord is the Fire Fairy we knew and loved for being an easy Level 10 Normal Summon. Metaion has a unique effect of returning all other monsters to the hand at the end of the Battle Phase and then burning 300 damage for each card returned to the hand. So if you pick Extra Deck monsters, you can't burn for anything. Also, you take damage from battles involving Metaion in defense position. Still good, but sending some monsters to the hand can be problematic so the score is a little lower than yesterday's card. Metaion has aged well and should definitely be played in a Timelord deck, or decks that could use the all powerful non-targeting monster removal.

Metaion, the Timelord:

The best part about Throwback Thursday this week is that we actually have a Timelord to review. Today, we look at the Timelord released 6 years before the newest batch. Say hi to Metaion, the Timelord.

Go to my Zaphion, the Timelord review for the standard Timelord stuff.

Metaion allows you to bounce all monsters on the field, except himself, and deal 300 damage for each monster sent back. This is great if your opponent overextended and put multiple monsters on the field. This is great against the Extra Link as well.

Metaion is a really good Timelord for clearing threats. Time was really nice to this Timelord.

Metaion, the Timelord

Whenever I see a "Timelord" card I always think of Doctor Who... But whenever I see Metaion I also think "Oooh, Chain Burn Tech"...

Quite often when monsters have an immunity from destruction effect AND the ability to effect all other monsters on the field (most specifically the opponent's) and for really quite minimal effort there is always going to be one type of niche that such a card can cover, and for Chain Burn, Metaion is in general quite a good option since it can be used to remove otherwise annoying "Floodgate" type monsters (esp. Extra Deck ones) that would prevent the Burn player from using Stall, Burn and Draw cards and with the nice addition of a small amount of damage for those monsters that are actually returned to the hand. This also gave the use of Metaion a nice advantage over the use of something like Lava Golem, Santa Claws or a Kaiju since with Metaion you give your opponent nothing, and furthermore, until your next Standby Phase it is quite likely that your opponent will be unable to do anything attack wise against you, thus stalling for a turn and helping you to hang onto your Stall cards for just that little bit longer.

Of course now, the "Timelords" have been unleashed and here Metaion will fit well into the "Stun" aspect of what Timelords do, and for what might prove the most useful aspect of all when it comes to Metaion is the fact that it returns monsters to the hand at the end of the Battle Phase, but I promise to expand on this point tomorrow...

Rating: 3.75 Not incredibly powerful when it comes to damage, but when it comes down to reducing the resources that your opponent has and also with recycling your own monsters Metaion is incredibly useful... And not just for Chain Burn any more!
