Dandylion
We end the week of looking at cards that should have
an impact during the Zelda format by reviewing the
card many players are saying will be the true MVP.
Much like Scapegoat, Dandylion has the potential to
give out piles of tokens, but without the pesky
restriction of not being able to summon other
monsters during the same turn. What’s truly odd is
that while Gofu got restricted on the upcoming April
1 OCG ban list, Dandylion was left untouched at 2
and Lonefire remained at 3. If anything, Dandylion
has the better potential to be abused.
Essentially what we are looking at is a monster that
can do one thing better than anything else when it
comes to link monsters: scale. Since his effect
isn’t once per turn, summoning dandylion over and
over can be used through cards such as Soul Charge
and Call of the Haunted, and new cards like Mauled
Captain, Rescue Ferret and Return to the Frontlines.
And more and more tokens means more scaling of links
through monsters such as Firewall Dragon and
Gaiasaber. His potential, especially in the OCG, is
near limitless. And if the game slows down as
predicted, he’ll rise that much further to the top,
especially in light of trap cards being viable
again.
Of all five cards we reviewed this week, Dandylion
has the most potential for truly broken plays and
decks. While cards like Gofu and Mind Control are
obvious adds to get to link monsters, they’re both
single-use cards. But Dandy could see the field a
dozen times per duel in the right situation. And
that’s what makes it truly great.

Dandylion
This card was iconic for Plant Synchro era. At
the time, the quality of the monsters you had on the
field didn't matter. All you needed was a few
LV3 monsters, and, with tuners, you could amass
numerous Synchros. The original purpose of
this card was to provide life point protection and
possible tribute-fodder I assume. But aside
from the very old days when LV6 monsters were worth
the tribute, I don't think this card has been great
in a pure-beatdown sense. For decks which
discard/dump cards, yes, Dandylion has potential,
but setting into defense position is not as
reliable. Now that Synchro's are no longer the
dominant deck, it's back to being what it used to
be. The U.S. got many of these Japanese cards
late. I could totally imagine Dandylion being
a staple if it came out in Soul of a Duelist or
something, back in 2004.

Hello Pojo Fans,
Love Dandylion.
How can you not love a cute monster that gives you a
plus no matter how he goes to the graveyard? You get
two tokens when Dandy hits the grave and you can use
the tokens however you want. Sure, can't use the
tokens for a Tribute Summon the turn they hit the
field, but that's small potatoes. Searchable and
flexible, Dandylion has been limited for a while for
a reason: it's good. Plus off of discarding costs
has always been frowned upon, and most monsters that
get grave effects don't get them if used this way.
Dandy will always want to give you those fluff
tokens when he goes to the graveyard. Still so good
after so much has come into the TCG and the changes
in trends and playability of cards.

Friday
Closing Retro Week is Dandylion, which I believe I
looked at once a number of years ago. Limited
in the TCG (Semi-Limited in the OCG) this is quite
an angry looking little Plant, no? Another
Token generating card, as it grants you two, once
sent to the Graveyard. They can't be used for
Tribute Summon the turn they are Special Summoned,
but you have free use of them entirely outside of
that. It's another card that works well
obviously to start in Plants, but about anywhere you
can fit it. You're not going to be hurt for
not using it in your Deck, and it doesn't benefit
from being a Tuner, but it's still useful for what
it does, where it can be utilized.

Dandylion
Todays COTD is a personal favourite of mine,
Dandylion. A level 3 earth, plant monster with 300
attack and defence might not seem like much, but
appearances can be decieving. Dandylion's effect is
to create two Fluff tokens when it's sent to the
graveyard. Said tokens have to be in defence and
can't be tributed for a tribute summon during the
turn they're created.
But Dandylion can be sent to the grave from
anywhere. Discarded for a cost? Killed on the field
by battle or effect? Milled from the deck? Or even
detached from an Xyz? Yes, Dandylion doesn't care
where he was before and there's no restrictions on
other summon types the turn the tokens are made. You
can still perform every other summon type.
And if you can retrieve him, you can do it multiple
times in the same turn, filling your field with
tokens and using them for Synchro and Link summons.
Even without going on the offensive with him, you
can set it and ward off a trio of attacks in a
pinch.
Advanced 4/5 Dandylion is always relevant in many
decks, Rituals, Synchro and Sylvans to name a
couple. Limited in the TCG with good reason, he'll
only get stronger in the future. |
