NickWhiz1  Thursday - Reaper on the Nightmare

Before I start, a plea to all news stations: I'm sick of hearing about Kobe Bryant!

OK, now that I've got that out of the way, here's today's CotD, Reaper on the Nightmare.

PGD-078
REAPER ON THE NIGHTMARE
Dark/Zombie-Fusion/5/800/600
"Spirit Reaper" + "Nightmare Horse"
Effect: This monster is not destroyed as a result of battle at any time although damage calculation is applied normally. When this card is specifically designated as a target of the effect of a Magic, Trap, or Effect Monster Card, this card is immediately destroyed. This monster can attack your opponent’s Life Points directly even if there is a monster on your opponent’s side of the field. When this card attacks your opponent’s Life Points directly, 1 card is randomly selected from your opponent’s hand and discarded to the Graveyard.
Super Rare

This card is unique in that its fusion is a TOTAL fusion of the two monsters. Stats, effect, everything. Spirit Reaper's endurance and hand destruction plus Nightmare Horse's direct attacking equals, well, your opponent's in trouble if they don't get rid of this thing.

Of course, it only has 800 attack, so your opponent can keep whacking it in attack position for major damage, and, as before, if it's targeted by a single monster targeting effect, it's instantly history. Plus, it's a Fusion, so it's hard to get out. You COULD use Metamorphosis (we'll review it tomorrow), but that would require you to use a Level 5 monster, of which there aren't a whole lot of good ones (Airknight Parshath, Patrician of Darkness, uhh, that's it =\). Of course, the Patrician will probably be in your Zombie deck, so it's a perfect fit.

Overall, this is a nice card. It's just slightly vulnerable and hard to get out.

Reaper on the Nightmare *RotN* (pronounced: Rotten)
PGD-078 -Super Rare
Dark/Zombie-Fusion/5/800/600
"Spirit Reaper" + "Nightmare Horse"
Effect: This monster is not destroyed as a result of battle at any time
although damage calculation is applied normally. When this card is
specifically designated as a target of the effect of a Magic, Trap, or
Effect Monster Card, this card is immediately destroyed. This monster can attack your opponent’s Life Points directly even if there is a monster on your opponent’s side of the field. When this card attacks your opponent’s Life Points directly, 1 card is randomly selected from your opponent’s hand and discarded to the Graveyard.

The first Fusion Effect Zombie released, and it's basically a Weenie Rushing Hand Disrupter with a quirky side effect. The fact that it cannot be destroyed in battle may lead many to think it will stay on the field for a good amount of time, but if it gets targeted by almost anything besides an attack it's automatically destroyed. That means allot of things will destroy it that normally wouldn't destroy monsters such as Change Of Heart, Penguin Soldier, Crass Clown, Relinquished, TER, Deal Of Phantom, Reinforcements, ANY Equip magic, Soul Exchange, Book Of Moon, and lots of others that would take too long to list.

The second bad part of RotNs effect is that if it is attacked, it may not
die but you take any overflow damage, so anybody that attacks it get a
trample effect (trample effect i.e. Fairy Meteor Crush, Spear Dragon, Mad Sword Beast), which can hurt quite allot if you don't back him up with some counter-strike traps or magic.

The best part about RotN is that you can play it along with the Jinzo#7
pose' and hide under Messenger Of Peace. You can also use cards that boost without targeting like Banner Of Courage and Mystical Plasma Zone. And the best thing I've found to work with RotN is the Tornado Wall + Umi/A Legendary Ocean combo to stop the over-flow and any other battle damage to your LP. Beside running RotN in a weenie Rush Deck, it also works ok in a Hand Disruption Deck, the 800 ATK makes it not too like compared with White Magical Hat And Don Zaloog, but it's still worth it with it's anti-death wish effect and you can use a couple tricks at getting it out faster. Like the new card Metamorphosis (tomorrows COTD), Summoner Of Illusions and
Fusion Gate helps out a little.

So weather you're play Hand Disruption, Weenie Rush, a straight Zombie Deck or any thing else you might be able to think up, Reaper On The Nightmare is worth trying out, but in a basic Beatdown, Exodia, Deck Destruction, Control, and Burner Decks won't really get much use out of RotN.

Casual: 3.0
Tourney: 2.5

doesn't look like the Reaper has the horse riding skills that he needs, or maybe nothing can tame the Nightmare. (yeah, I know it sounds corney)

Reaper on the Nightmare, 8/7/03:

I can't wait for Friday, can you?  Friday we're reviewing one of my favorite magic cards in the game.  :)

Anyway...

Reaper may be a Fusion, but I think it's somewhat playable if you protect it.  A lot.

Level 5 for an 800-ATK monster doesn't make a lot of sense, but this card can both attack directly and discard 1 card from your opponent's hand (Note: I've confirmed that the attack has to do damage in order for the discard to occur).  Not bad.

Besides that, this card has the same strengths and weaknesses as Spirit Reaper (with a tiny, tiny bit more ATK).  There aren't that many targeted effects that people use frequently (except Snatch Steal), and since Trap Hole doesn't work on this card you won't have to worry about that.  You'll still be taking a lot of damage with this card constantly in attack mode, even if it doesn't die.

Most people tend to just use Spirit Reaper since it's much easier to summon, and lacks only the direct-attack ability.  Fusions are just so difficult to use... this card has potential, but summoning it just eats away at your card advantage, and you may or may not make that back up in the number of cards this card discards.

Trivia:  This is the only fusion card released in English that has the combined effects of its fusion-material.

One simple sentence: Do NOT use this card, at all. First of all, in order to summon this guy, you must waste tons of resources. This means you will end up ditching 3 cards for the price of 1, which is never a good idea to do. Secondly, much like its predecessor Spirit Reaper, it will be hard most of the time to keep it on the field. The effect is kind of nifty, but, I mush rather use Spirit Reaper on its own, or the ever famous, Don Zaloog. Even in combination with Metamorphosis, its still a waste IMO. Steer away from this.

Today on Mystery Science Theater 3000..errr I mean Pojo.com’s Yu-Gi-Oh cotd we get a fusion card from PGD. Well fusions are slow, and this one doesn’t pack high stats. However it makes up for that in effect. It has the strengths and weaknesses of spirit reaper, it cannot die in battle which is nice, but as soon as they target you’re screwed. This card also has the discard effect. What makes this card potentially sextacular (there Vivi1886, are you happy now) is that it can also attack directly. Meaning instant discard, rocking in hand destruction. Another plus is both its fusion materials are sangan and witchable. You could also summon it with Metamorphosis, or the next sets Magical Scientist.

Vodkam Thursday 09/07/03: Reaper on the Nightmare
Fusion/Effect Monster
Dark/Zombie 5/800/600
PGD-078

"Spirit Reaper" + "Nightmare Horse"
This monster is not destroyed as a result of battle at any time, although damage calculation is applied normally. When this card is specifically designated as the target of the effect of a Magic, Trap or Effect Monster Card, this card is immediately destroyed. This monster can attack your opponent's Life Points directly even if there is a monster on your opponent's side of the field. When this card attacks your opponent's Life Points directly, 1 card is randomly selected from your opponent's hand and discarded to the Graveyard.

This is a very interesting card. Killer effects but with a few big drawbacks. This card is Spirit Reaper on steroids.

Let's see... Can't be destroyed by battle, can attack directly and forces your opponent to discard when it does. It seems almost unfair to have this monster out. You can't destroy it and you'll be discarding every turn unless you have a Waboku or Kuriboh or if you prevent it from attacking altogether. If you get this out and your opponent can't destroy it quickly, the duel will be pretty much over. 3 or 4 turns and your opponent won't have a hand left. Also, if you're on the defensive, like Spirit Reaper, you can switch this to defense mode and use it as a wall until your opponent draws a trample monster (ie. Spear Dragon) and makes you pay.

Given all these killer effects it has, there are some awfully big minuses to this card:

1. It's a fusion monster. Metamorphosis makes it easier to get out but you still have to sacrifice a level 5 monster. I don't know if I'd want to give up an Airknight Parshath or Guardian Sphinx for this but I'd certainly give up my opponent's after I take control of it. :)

2. You can destroy it with any targeted effect. Change of Heart (if it's face-up), Magic Cylinder (you will still take the damage when it's destroyed), even equip magic will destroy it. This also means you can't use Premature Burial or Call of the Haunted to revive it. You'll have to stick to Monster Reborn and Book of Life.

3. 800 ATK means if you want to keep making your opponent discard, they will make you pay with a big LP hit every turn if they have a monster.

All in all, this is a very good monster but not that easy to get into play. The upsides still outweigh the downsides. This card is a must if you run Metamorphosis in your deck but I don't think you could base a deck around this.

Reaper on the Nightmare, This is a great card for the new found Metamorphosis decks.  This card is not only a unbelievable defense, but it can attack your opponents life points directly and not only does it do direct damage but you randomly discard one card from there hand!  This card will work well in a Fusion deck, throw in a few Messenger Of Peace and fissure, you can easily Yata-Lock your opponent.
