Tuesday - Spirit Reaper
Continuing on, we come to one of the more annoying monsters in the game, Spirit Reaper.

This monster is not destroyed as a result of battle at any time, although damage calculation is applied normally. When this card is specifically designated as a target of the effect of a Magic, Trap, or Effect Monster Card, this card is immediately destroyed. When this card attacks your opponent’s Life Points directly, 1 card is randomly selected from your opponent’s hand and discarded to the Graveyard.
Basically, what this monster boils down to is:
1. It can't be destroyed by battle, period, but it still takes damage. That means it can still be destroyed by Magic/Traps, even if they are non-Targeted.
2. It is instantly destroyed if targeted while FACE-UP. If it is face-down, you cannot tell what the monster is, so it is impossible for its effect to activate. Don't say Change of Heart, because by the time you get to Flip Summon it, the targeting effect is over.
3. It has a White Magical Hat effect. You will most likely need a clear field to get this effect to work.
This is quite a nice card. If you're in a tight spot, it can create a temporary wall preventing your opponent from attacking you directly. Just remember that if ANY targeted effect hits it while it's face-up, it's gone (it doesn't even have to be an effect that would destroy it).
Watch out for monsters with Trample (Fairy Meteor Crush effect), as Spirit Reaper is open season for them. The two that people use most often are Spear Dragon and Airknight Parshath. Spear Dragon isn't too bad, as you can just eat the 1700 LP, then destroy Spear next turn with Reaper. Airknight can be destroyed by Goblin, Bazoo, and Jinzo, and suicided with Gemini and Spear (unless you use some evil Waboku combo).
This is one of my favorite monsters because it's just so damn annoying. You'll agree after facing it.

Spirit Reaper is a very interesting little Monster we received
in Pharaonic Guardian.
He's sort of like a mini Swiss Army Knife. Not only can it discard cards like White Magical Hat and Don
Zaloog, it also has an amazing stall capability. Unlike other Monsters, Spirit Reaper has somewhat of a "Heart of Clear Water" built into it.
Of course the downfall to Spirit Reaper is that if he is in ATK mode, your or your opponent's Life Points become an easy target. If you time it correctly, you shouldn't have many problems.
There isn't much else to say about Spirit Reaper besides that he's just waiting to be abused. There are a multitude of decks that he would greatly contribute to.

Now this is an interesting card. An almost invincible wall is kinda nice, especially at Level 3. This could certainly buy a whole lot of time if you can't draw something to destroy it soon enough. Cards that work on it include Change of Heart (only if it's face up in the first place), Snatch Steal, Ring of Destruction, Exiled Force, but more importantly, trample cards. Spear Dragon, Airknight Parshath, and other Fairy-Meteor-Crush type effects simply pwn this thing. It will take damage and stay alive, but if you keep nailing this guy with trample, you'll within a few turns.
Rating: 4/5. This is a pretty good monster. An invincible wall is really, really nice. Just watch out for trample. Especially Airknight >.< .
BTW, I'll be heading off to GenCon Weds. morning and won't be back till Monday evening. So, I'll just write the other CotD Reviews today. I'll win in the name of Pojo, and those down in the DFW area of Texas. And Jason, no more 1st-round knock-outs, ok? :) |

This card is kind of weird, well first off it only has 300 atk and can't be equipped, so the only way to boost it's atk is with cards like Banner Of Courage which increases all monsters instead of designating one as a target.
As well as it gets immediately destroyed when targeted by magic, trap or effect monsters like if you Crass Clown or Penguin Soldier it back to your opponents’ hand it gets destroyed instead. The only way I see this card being good is in a Weenie Rush or Hand Disruption deck. Sure it can't be destroyed in battle but if it gets attacked you still take the overflow damage to your LP.
I see that this card can be useful if your opponent has no monsters out so that it can attack directly to cause discardation and that it can't be destroyed in battle, but with such a low atk and not being able to equip it, I don't see the point really. I may be missing the good points of this card but I don't really see how... Maybe if it could attack LP directly, but it only states that "when" it attacks LP directly its effect is activated. Spirit Reaper is also good with or against Last Turn, since it can't be destroyed in battle and damage is treated as 0, it will most likely result in a draw.

Spirit Reaper has to be, without a doubt, an interesting card. A handful people I know will definitely play this card, or at least try it out in their deck. It can be great stall if it’s in defense mode, and if your opponent has a lot of powerhouse monsters on the field. The reason for this is, since Reaper can’t be destroyed in battle, it will stay on the field, safe from destruction due to attacking monsters. Even with this good effect, this card can be iffy at times. You must know how to utilize it correctly before even considering placing it into your deck. Just as if you where using Don Zaloog or WMH, its best when there are no monsters on your opponents side of the field. Attack, discard a random card from their hand. Easy.
Note that if you draw this card first turn, its best to leave it in defense mode. If a Spear Dragon hits it, you’ll take 1600 damage, but, you will kill that Spear Dragon next turn. Switch Spirit into attack mode, summon another monster, and simply attack. It’s a great card to use in that type of situation.
Spirit Reaper also fits well into Zombie decks, since after all, it is a Zombie. Even with that in mind, the major problem of this card is it’s second effect. If Spirit Reaper is targeted by Magic, Traps, or the effect of a monster, BOOM!, instant destruction. A backup plan will always be nice to help get around this. You must always note that you will already need support on the field before actually bringing this card into play.
