Tuesday - Giant Axe
Mummy
Earth/5/1700/2000
[Zombie/Effect]
Effect: You can flip this card into face-down
Defense Position once per turn during your Main
Phase. When the ATK of a monster on your
opponent's side of the field that attacks this
card in face-down Defense Position is lower than
the DEF of this monster, the attacking monster is
destroyed.
If it wasn't for the
one-Tribute, Giant Axe Mummy wouldn't be bad at
all in a Zombie themed deck. Having the ability to
attack, and then switch back to a solid 2000 DEF
every turn can prove to be brutal in many cases.
Add in his other little Monster-destroying Effect,
and it just makes him that much better.
But of course, we are
slightly brought down by the one-Tribute Level 5
status. Luckily, he's a Zombie. Meaning that there
are several ways to Special Summon him without
having to hard cast him.
In Limited, he's very
good and very playable. In Draft, he's definitely
an early pick if not your first pick.
Monsters with good Effects like these are hidden
within the mass amounts of jank in any Limited
format.

Giant Axe Mummy:
PGD-023-Common
Earth/Zombie/5/1700/2000
Effect: You can flip this card into face-down Defense Position once per turn during your Main Phase. When the ATK of a monster on your opponent's side of the field that attacks this card in face-down Defense Position is lower than the DEF of this monster, the attacking monster is destroyed.
Pros:
??? Not much that I can see
Cons:
One tribute
Unsearchable
Half useless Effect
Combos:
Wandering Mummy - Confuse the opponent, well slightly.
Chorus Of Sanctuary - Give him 2500 DEF to hold up against 2050-2500 attackers.
Shift or Patrician Of Darkness - Well duh.
Notes:
Well, this guy is hardly even playable. First off, he's a one tribute Monster, and it's not anything worth using recursion on either. His Effect basically has to be work around, most likely the opponent is going to know not to attack it with anything under 2050 ATK if you keep flipping him back face-down, so it leaves Monster Removal Effects or just some heavy hitters to take him down.
His Effect alone is basically a Destruction Punch (LON-085) in a re-flippable Monster. If the opponent attacks him with a Gemini Elf they take 100 Damage and Gemini Elf is destroyed. Now with only having 1700 ATK and 2000 DEF he won't be able to take out any 1800+ attackers going around or fend off any attackers with 2050+ ATK, so in the long run this guy isn't going to go far, at least not in an average Deck, but if you try a pit of planning with cards like Shift or Dark Spirit Of The Silence you can get a slight theme going with him.
Ratings:
Casual: 2.0
Tourney: 1.5
ArtWork: 2.3 - Well mummies look cool most of the time, but this guy is just fat and slobbish looking, I'm surprised he can hold that axe without his limbs ripping. |

Tuesday 11/11/03 - Giant Axe Mummy
Hey all, it’s ya b0i f00b from the boards, I’m new to CoTD but hopefully you can get some new ideas for uses of cards, etc. It looks like it’s giant week here, and my first review is Giant Axe Mummy from PGD.
Giant Axe Mummy Earth/5/1700/2000
[Zombie/Effect]
Effect: You can flip this card into face-down Defense Position once per turn during your Main Phase. When the ATK of a monster on your opponent's side of the field that attacks this card in face-down Defense Position is lower than the DEF of this monster, the attacking monster is destroyed.
Pros:
+2000 defense
+Monster Removal through it’s effect
+Can be offensive AND defensive
+One of the better zombies
Cons:
-Level 5 monster
-Not going to fool anyone
-1700 attack is low
-There are better choices for the same purpose
At first glance, this card seems promising. A level 5 zombie with 2000 defense and an effect that can mill through your opponents monsters if they choose to attack sounds solid.
The problem here is, it will be obvious when this puppy is brought out, and most likely you will never get his effect off. Just like Guardian Sphinx, you have to sack a monster to summon him face down. How many times are you going to attack a face down monster with a [low] attacker when your opponent had to SACK to bring him out. My point is, it’s obvious what type of monster you‘ve just played, and Giant Axe Mummy will probably be destroyed by monster removal before he is attacked. With people running Nobleman of Crossout, Raigeki, Dark Hole, Change of Heart, Creature Swap, etc. this may not be as formidable of a wall as it seems.
However, in a casual zombie deck, combine this monster with Patrician of Darkness to create a nice stall for your opponent. But, while royal keeper, a level 4 with the flip down once per turn ability, doesn’t destroy monsters, it has potentially 1900/2000 stats for a level 4, which makes it a better choice than giant axe mummy, IMO.
Basically, you’re not going to surprise your opponent by summoning this monster, so it’s special effect isn’t really all that, erm, effective. And, there are better choices such as Guardian Sphinx or Royal Keeper. This card might be fun to try out, but simply isn’t tournament worthy. Now in limited, this card is a great pick because of its versatility and the lack of monster removal.

Hmm, Zappy's back :D Umm, yea, sorry for being so egotistical, but I had to do other things back in April if anyone remembers me. On my first day back I get to review a spiffy card called Giant Axe Mummy.
Earth/5/1700/2000
[Zombie/Effect]
Effect: You can flip this card into face-down Defense Position once per turn during your Main Phase. When the ATK of a monster on your opponent's side of the field that attacks this card in face-down Defense Position is lower than the DEF of this monster, the attacking monster is destroyed.
Card Number PGD-023
Common
That's the card for anyone who doesn't know...
First of all I will name some combos with this mummy that looks like a
warcraft 3 Abomination.
Pros:
-2000 defense
-Cool effect if you can get it off
Cons:
-1700 attack
-beatdown monsters own it, unless its in defense
-lvl 5
-Any monster removal owns this card
Pros: Well the 2000 defense isn't bad I guess. Since most decks these days revolve
around cards like mystic tomato. So, decks are usually stacked with monsters with under 1500 attack. Also if you can actually get his effect off it could be good, but it still isn't useful, because as I have said people rely on tomato these days, and killing the tomato is what people want.
Cons: Any beatdown mons own this card. That means lajinn, harpies brother own this card. And of course gemini and gaf, but I know gaf isn't overly used anymore. But mainly any beatdown mon with over 1700 attack owns this thing in attack mode. Of course this mon is lvl 5. Am I really going to sac one of my monsters for this thing? The effect is barely useable and when it is, it will most likely help your
opponent. I.E. if they attack with witch, sangan, etc. Even the list of two combos mentioned below don't make this card worth playable. I am sure there are more, but this card is so horrible its not even worth the time.
Combos:
Book of moon + Giant Axe Mummy: Flip over Book of moon when your
opponent attacks this 1700 monster, and than that monster dies, unless of course the monster has over 2000 attack.
Pyramid Turtle + Giant Axe Mummy: Hmm, well since this card is a zombie, you can use Pyramid turtle with this card to fast fetch.
Yea, these combos are pretty self explanatory, so unless your um not smart I think you can get the gist of these combos.
Tourney Play: 1/5 This card doesn't even deserve the shoe box.
Casual Play: 2.5/5 Uh its decent here, if you want to give your
opponent a free win.
Picture: I see people rating the picture on the card so
I might as well too. 3.5/5 because it reminds me of an abomination on Warcraft 3. Yea, I am a nerd, sue me...:O |

Giant
Axe Mummy
Earth/Zombie
5 Stars/1700 ATK/ 2000 DEF
You can flip this card into face-down Defense
Position once per turn during your Main Phase. When
the ATK of a monster on your opponent's side of the
field that attacks this card in face-down Defense
Position is lower than the DEF of this monster, the
attacking monster is destroyed.
Pgd-023
Common
Upsides: Monster Removal
Down sides: 5 Stars; 1700 Attack for a 5 star
monster; 2000 Defense for a 5 star monster; unless
your opponent is forgetful, they won’t attack it
twice with monsters too weak to kill it;
Unsearchable
This monster is shoe box material. It has no
potential as of right now and could maybe see play
in a fun deck along side wandering mummy. For those
you who don’t know what wandering mummy is, It
basically has the same effect about flipping face
down, but when it is flipped face up (or flip
summoned?) It can shuffle all face-down monsters you
have on the field, meaning your opponent would have
to guess to see if they can miss this monster.
In Sealed, This card is as about as useful as it is
in tourneys. Please avoid it at all costs.
Casual Rating: 1.1(and that’s being nice)
Tourney Rating: 0.1(That’s being really, REALLY
nice)
Sealed Rating: Same as Above |
