DARK JEROID
Dark/Fiend/4/1200/1500
When this monster is Normal Summoned, Flip Summoned, or Special Summoned, select 1 face-up monster on the field and decrease its ATK by 800 points. This effect lasts until the selected card is destroyed or removed from the field.
Rare
We've been reviewing PGD cards for almost two months, and we still haven't reviewed this guy? I'm surprised. This critter is one of the best Rares in the set.
It's a simple mechanism, really. Summon him out, one face-up monster loses 800 attack. He effectively turns into a 2000 ATK monster, should you attack the affected monster. If your opponent has a Jinzo or something similar out, summon this guy, and now your Gemini/Spear/Kycoo can kill it. Heck, use the effect on Spirit Reaper. Since it's a targeted effect, it's basically free monster removal.
This card may see play in Control-type decks that rely on monsters like Mystic Tomato and Don Zaloog. He's easily brought out by Tomato, and can lower a monster's attack power enough to be destroyed by Zaloog, giving you both field and hand advantage. Try him out in a beatdown, if you want to. I wouldn't max out on him, though, because there's always the chance you'll summon him out when he's the only face-up. You'll have to use the effect on himself, basically making him an effect-less Lily =/ If that ends up the case, set him. 1500 DEF will actually get you places in this environment.
Standard: 3.5
If you can get him to work, USE HIM. Trust me, you'll thank me for it.
Draft: 4.0
Another good draft pick. Stat increasers/reducers aren't very common in Draft (well, effective ones, at least). Plus, 1500 DEF will block off the majority of monsters. |

DARK JEROID
Dark/Fiend/4/1200/1500
When this monster is Normal Summoned, Flip Summoned, or Special Summoned, select 1 face-up monster on the field and decrease its ATK by 800 points. This effect lasts until the selected card is destroyed or removed from the field.
Rare
I ran this guy back at GenCon, and it worked pretty well. With 3 Mystic Tomatoes, I could search for this guy to help take down a Jinzo or Bazoo. Plus, anything with 1900 ATK or less got stopped cold by Jeroid.
But for the most part, Jeroid only shines in a deck with 2-3 Mystic Tomatoes; sometimes it's not to great to Normal Summon Jeroid by itself, as 1200 is still weak. But when you get to abuse Special Summons, this is the way to do it, SandTrap style. And everyone knows that if Sandy does it, it must be cool ;).
Rating: 3.7/5. In the right hands and deck, Dark Jeroid can really be a versatile and powerful monster.
On the other hand, getting this in your starting hand won't exactly be a pleasant way to start a duel off.
Plus...Dark Jeroid sounds and looks pretty cool. So you got to love it ^^ |

Dark/Fiend/4/1200/1500
Effect: When this monster is Normal Summoned, Flip Summoned, or Special Summoned, select 1 face-up monster on the field and decrease its ATK by 800 points. This effect lasts until the selected card is destroyed or removed from the field.
Pros:
Works when Summoned in ANY way.
Effect last till the targeted Monster leaves the Field.
Can take down a 1950 or less ATK Monster
Can let a 1650+ ATK Monster take down a Jinzo.
Reverse Trap can make him Boost a Monster for a turn*
Searchable by Sangan, WOTBF, Mystic Tomato and Last Will.
Cons:
Only works on Face-up Monsters (It would be odd if it worked on Face-Down).
Useless if opponent has no Face-Up Monsters.
Reverse Trap can make him Boost Monsters for a turn*
Combos:
Penguin Soldier - Keep Re-Summoning Jeroid.
Reverse Trap - Boost your own Monster for a turn.
Notes:
This was a somewhat highly anticipated card, but his playability really depends on the Deck and the situations of the Field for it to be very effective. Obviously you're not going to want to Summon it right away, you'll want to wait until the opponent has a Monster out that COULD really only be destroyed by one of your own Monsters IF their Monsters ATK was reduced by 800 or less. So you may say "800... That's not much", well... It isn't, but it can help, you just have to play around with him to know when the best times to Summon him is.
There aren't too many combos to pull of with him really, besides using Recursion cards or "returner" cards like Penguin Soldier and Hane-Hane to reuse the same Jeroid over and over. It's fun when you Summon Jeroid and use his Effect on a Monster with 800 ATK or less, leaving a 0 ATK Monster for anybody to easily destroy. I also mentioned in the "Pros & Cons" that Reverse Trap can work with and against Jeroids Effect, but it would only last for the one turn so it's very situational.
Dark Jeroid/Jelloid was a Super Rare in Japan which surprised me, I know he's a decent tech card but I didn't think he was that good, and I guess eventually they didn't either and that's why he's only a normal Rare now.
The only thing I'm not sure about with this card is that if the targeted Monster gets flipped Face-Down will their stats go back to normal? I would think so but the card only states when destroyed or removed from the Field. Still waiting for new rulings to leak out to the public, It would be nice if they made rulings BEFORE set came out, it would save them some space in their email inboxes from all the questions people send in, eh?

DARK JEROID
Dark/Fiend/4/1200/1500
When this monster is Normal Summoned, Flip Summoned, or Special Summoned, select 1 face-up monster on the field and decrease its ATK by 800 points. This effect lasts until the selected card is destroyed or removed from the field.
Rare
Dark Jeroid may not seem like much at first, but this Monster can be pretty useful. At first sight, you can see that it can be searched by both Sangan and the Witch, as
well as having the ability to be Special Summoned by the Tomato. Its Effect of lowering a face-up Monster's ATK
strength by 800 can be quite useful. It can work on your own Monsters, as well. Most specifically with Helpoemer, for example, as it'd bring Helpoemer's ATK down to 1200, making it easily destroyed in Battle, thus getting Helpoemer's Effect to go off. It's certainly effective against some of your opponent's stronger Monsters that they may be using, such as a Gemini Elf or something. It could also set your other Monsters up for destroying even more powerful Monsters, such as Jinzo. Say your opponent has a Jinzo on the Field, and you have a Spear Dragon. Bring out Jeroid and lower Jinzo down to just 1600 ATK strength, setting it up to be destroyed by your Spear Dragon.
Jeroid's Effect going off whenever it's Normal, Special, or Flip Summoned is quite useful as well. It doesn't only have to be one specific type of Summon, like with some other cards. That makes it a bit more versatile in the decks that it's used in, such as Dark-based or Fiend-based decks, which is what it's usually used in. Also, since it's Effect works until the Monster that Jeroid targeted leaves the Field somehow, that makes it a bit easier and more fun to use.
1200 ATK strength on Jeroid isn't exactly great, though, so that's a bit of a downside. It certainly won't be staying on the Field for a very long time.

Rare
Dark Jeroid may seem very unplayable at first glance, but it has some nice uses as a tech Monster. The fact that it's Effect goes offer regardless if you Normal Summon it, Flip Summon it, or Special Summon it via Monster Reborn and like makes it quite versatile.
His 1500 DEF can even stop the occasional Don Zaloog, although most of the time it will be attacked by a Beatstick first, or just blown up with some random Magic/Trap card.
But like I mentioned a little earlier, Dark Jeroid's primary use is in either destroying one of the average Beatsticks, or aiding in destroying a larger threat. One of the best small-advantage combos you can pull off with Dark Jeroid is when you are running Mystic Tomato in the same deck. It's not too difficult to comprehend.
All in all Dark Jeroid is a slightly above average Monster. They're are
a lot of Monsters that can do a better job than him, but he has the ability to
surprise your opponent. Which could probably give you more efficient advantages in the long run. He's definitely not a Monster that belongs in every deck, they're are only a few decks that are tailored for him. Namely decks that are running two or three Mystic Tomato.

Here's an interesting card with a neat ability.
Got a Gemini Elf in the way? Summon Dark Jeroid, weaken it then kill it. Dark Jeroid is the answer to any single monster with less than 2000 ATK. Of course, you can use it on a monster that you don't intend on attacking with Dark Jeroid, such as Jinzo or Spirit Reaper (which will be destroyed). The permanency of the effect is what makes this monster so useful, not to mention that you can bring it out with Mystic Tomato, Witch or Sangan. And of course, it can always serve as Dark Necrofear food.
Unfortunately, Dark Jeroid has a very limited life span. Once you use his effect to kill a monster, you're left with a 1200 ATK monster that can't really kill anything that doesn't want to be killed. His 1500 DEF however can at least slow down the likes of Don Zaloog and Mystic Tomato. Also, if there are no face-up monsters on the field, that Dark Jeroid in your hand is useless because his effect is mandatory, even if you have to use it on itself. For such a weak monster, it also unfortunate that it has 4 stars so it doesn't get underneath Gravity Bind.
Anyways, as for combo potential, there really isn't any unless you count using Dark Jeroid's effect on your own Helpoemer to help it get killed. Dark Jeroid is a pretty independent monster.
While the card says the effect is permanent until the selected monster is destroyed or removed from the field, it seems that it conflicts with the rules for effects when monsters are turned face-down. We'll have to wait for the ruling on that one.
All in all, a pretty decent monster. I'd definitely use one (possibly two) in a Fiend deck. He also works pretty well in most decks that use Mystic Tomatoes.
