Dark Paladin
Dark/8/2900/2400
[Spellcaster/Fusion/Effect]
"Dark Magician" + "Buster Blader"
Effect: This monster can only be Special Summoned by
Fusion Summon. As long as this card remains face-up on
the field, you can negate the activation of 1 Spell
Card and destroy the Spell Card by discarding 1 card
from your hand. The ATK of this card increases by 500
points for each Dragon-Type monster on the field and
in either Graveyard.
To start off this week of magicians, we get Dark
Paladin, which is the first reason in months for
someone to use those fusion substitutes from the
tournament packs. Besides the immense support for
getting dark magician or buster blader onto the field
or into your hand, the Dark Paladin also boasts
incredible abilities. A monster-effect magic jammer is
NOTHING to scoff at, and with serpent and cards such
as thunder dragon, you’ll be negating a LOT of magic.
The attack bonus is also a great bonus since Spear
Dragons have been running rampant in the metagame for
a while. Note that the effect includes both
graveyards, such using some Spear Dragons in the same
deck as this one is not a bad idea at all.
Of
course, Dark Paladin has to have a few drawbacks.
While this guy can negate any magic/spell cards with
ease, it has a problem with monsters and traps.
Obviously, a monster isn’t going to overpower dark
paladin unless it’s lily (which has lost playability
with the amazoness cards out), since high-level
monsters are going to be too slow to stop Paladin.
There’s still the virus and x-force, which is a reason
to main-deck a few “My body as a Shield” spells.
There’s also traps, but some m/t removal gets them.
The main problem about paladin is that he’s dead
weight when he hits the graveyard. Unfortunately, his
effect keeps him from being revived, since he can ONLY
BE SPECIAL SUMMONED BY A FUSION SUMMON. It sucks, but
most monsters need a drawback.
Constructed: 4/5- There are some NASTY decks that can
be made revolving around the dark paladin. Use the
right magicians and the right spells and you have a
massive powerhouse.
Limited: n/a- I can’t even score this for sealed deck
until there’s another yugi starter deck that’s
released, which would hopefully have both dark
magician and buster blader. |

Dark Paladin/Super Magical Swordsman-Black Paladin:
MFC-105-Ultra Rare
Dark/Spellcaster-Fusion/8/2900/2400
"Dark Magician" + "Buster Blader"
Effect: This monster can only be Special Summoned by
Fusion Summon. As long as this card remains face-up on
the field, you can negate the activation of 1 Spell
Card and destroy the Spell Card by discarding 1 card
from your hand. The ATK of this card increases by 500

Pros:
Gets Buster Bladers Effect
Built in continuous Magic Jammer Effect
Works with Diffusion Wave Motion
The Fusion Material Monsters are worth playing even if
you don't get a change to
Cons:
Can only be Fusion Summoned
Combos:
DNA Surgery - Change all Monsters on the Filed into
Dragons to give him a boost.
Notes:
This guy has one of the best Effects for a Fusion
Monster and that The Fusion Material Monsters are
worth playing even if you don't get a change to get
Paladin out, well at least Buster Blader is.
With Spear Dragon, the new Luster Dragon and many more
good Dragons yet to come, you can build a
Dragon/Paladin Deck just to ensure a good ATK boost,
and with Emblem Of Dragon Destroyer, Miracle
Restoring, Skilled White Magician and Skilled Dark
Magician it's a lot easier to get the Fusion Material
to Summon Dark Paladin.
A good tag-team would be Dark Paladin with Jinzo,
since Jinzo will negate all Traps and Paladin can
Negate all Spells, just as long as you have enough
cards in hand that you're willing to discard, but
that's where Sinister Serpent can help out, well at
least once per turn.

ArtWork: 4.5 - At the moment I've seen 3 different
drawings for the Japanese Paladin and I think the
closer up shot that they choose is the best, but I
still hope they come out with the others. |

Monday 10/27/03: Dark Paladin
8/2900/2400
Fusion Monster
Dark/Spellcaster
MFC-105
"Dark Magician" + "Buster Blader"
This monster can only be Special Summoned by Fusion
Summon. As long as this card remains face-up on the
field, you can negate the activation of 1 Spell Card
and negate the Spell Card by discarding 1 card from
your hand. The ATK of this card increases by 500
points for each Dragon-Type monster on the field and
in either player's Graveyard.
Dark Paladin is one of the most anticipated cards in
Magician's Force.
Let's see... 2900 ATK, built-in Magic Jammer effect
and an improved Buster Blader effect. Dark Paladin is
next to impossible to kill once it's on the field
since you won't be able to kill it with Spell Cards
unless your opponent has no cards in his/her hand.
Most people don't play many Trap Cards either so it's
a small risk as are monster effects which destroy
monsters. If you happen to luck out and get Jinzo onto
the field as well, your opponent will be praying for a
Jar monster (Fiber, Cyber etc) or Tribe-Infecting
Virus.
Unfortunately, this is still a Fusion Monster and can
ONLY be Fusion Summoned so Magical Scientist,
Metamorphosis, Summoner of Illusions and anything else
that summons fusions without Polymerization or Fusion
Gate will not work. Unless you base your whole deck on
summoning Dark Paladin, you will also have a very
tough time making it happen. Maxing out on Dark
Magicians, Buster Bladers and all sorts of Fusion
Substitute Monsters will make it easier but you've got
a lot of dead weight in your deck with all those
tribute and weakling monsters while you're waiting for
the right cards. Also, when Dark Paladin dies, it's
dead for good because you cannot revive it.
Dark Paladin is a lot of fun if you can summon him,
but he's still a Fusion Monster which, in my eyes,
automatically makes him unplayable in a tournament
deck, especially since you can't take any shortcuts in
summoning him. (Fusion Subs don't count as shortcuts).

Dark Paladin, although it can certainly be a very
powerful card when Fusion Summoned, is quite overrated
by many duelists. I've said most of what I had to say
about Dark Paladin in my Article over in my Look into
the Future section, over at this link:
http://www.pojo.com/yu-gi-oh/FeaturedWriters/DM7FGD/2003/10-1-03.shtml
Contrary to popular belief, Fusion Sub Monsters (Versago,
Goddess with the Third Eye, etc.) CAN indeed be used
with Dark Paladin. Well, one can, that is. When using
Paladin, it's best to base your deck on one of its
requirements, either Buster Blader (Using Skilled
White Magician) or Dark Magician. (Using Skilled Dark
Magician) It'll make your deck a little faster and
easier to use rather than basing it around using both
Buster Blader and Dark Magician.
Overall, Dark Paladin's a pretty good card.. It's just
not as "great" as a lot of people think it is.
