Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Bazoo the Soul Eater

Card Number - LON-064

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst.  3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating

Date Reviewed - 10.08.03

Martin
Earth/4/1600/900
[Beast/Effect]
Effect: You can remove up to 3 cards in your Graveyard from play to increase the ATK of this monster by 300 points for each card removed from play until the end of your opponent's next turn. This effect can only be used only once during your turn.

Bazoo the Soul Eater was simply put the strongest level 4 Monster available. Getting up to 3 cards in your graveyard early game was simple. This card allowed you to play a 2500 attack power Monster straight from your hand.

The Japanese equivalent of Bazoo said you could only remove Monster's from the graveyard, and from the word that's been going around lately, this will be the ruling that is going to go into effect on Bazoo the Soul Eater from now on.

If this is the case, then this Monster loses A LOT of effectiveness. It won't be as fast as it once was, but I suppose can be a great pull late game. That is just too situational to depend on for my taste however. For it's original text, Bazoo deserved the play it got. It was that damn good.

However, I'm rating the newer more depowered Soul Eater.

Bazoo the Soul Eater:
LON-064-Super Rare
Earth/Beast/4/1600/900
Effect: You can remove up to 3 cards in your Graveyard from play to increase the ATK of this monster by 300 points for each card removed from play until the end of your opponent's next turn. This effect can only be used only once during your turn.

Pros:
Searchable by WOTBF
Can overpower Jinzo
Lasts until opponent end their turn

Cons:
Removing Card can hurt sometimes; i.e. Fiber Jar
Kycoo and Necrovalley stop removal

Combos:
Painful Choice - Get some Monsters to remove->boost
Miracle Dig - Reload

Notes:
The way the current English rules stand Bazoo can be an extremely powerful Monster, but if and when they do change the Effect to only being able to remove Monsters for the boost then his playability will decrease at least a little. Bazoo has max potential to be self-boosted to 2500 ATK and it last through the opponents next turn, which helps keep up his guard up but if the opponent uses Change Of Heart, Snatch Steal or Jowls Of Dark Demise after Bazoo has already been max boosted the turn before, the opponent can use the effect to boost him to 2800, 3100 or 3400.

The only mentionable down-side to removing your own cards from play is if Fiber Jar gets activated. But even then, if you only remove cards that you REALLY don't need then the Fiber restart can make your Deck run smoother and pull key cards quicker.

Obviously Bazoo only really fits in BeatDown and BeatDown-Archtype Decks, but he is widely used and abused from what I've seen in my area at least. I could care less if they change the ruling on him or not, I just want them to change Skull Lair to only Monsters since people over-abuse it at times.

Ratings:
Casual: 4.0
Tourney: 3.0
ArtWork: 3.0 - Baboons eating souls, I guess it's payback for humans eating monkey brains. I bet souls taste better too.
