Friday: Shining Angel:
MRL-088-Rare
Light/Fairy/4/1400/800
Effect: When this card is sent to the Graveyard as a
result of battle, you may select 1 Light monster with
an ATK of 1500 or less from your Deck and Special
Summon it to the Field (no Tribute is required for
monsters of Level 5 or more). The Deck is then
shuffled.
With the new set containing a few good Light Monster
with 1500 or less ATK including Y-Dragon Head, z-Metal
Caterpillar, Roulette Bomber, Pixie Knight, and Royal
Librarian, Shining Angel will start to see a little
more play but still not as much play as Mystic Tomato
gets.
Although, the next set also contains the Twilight Zone
Beast or whatever they rename it to, but it has Lesser
Fiends effect and is a Level 3 Earth/Beast/1400/1400,
which the Twilight Beast having the same ATK as
Shining Angel, Mystic Tomato and the others like them,
as well it can take down Nimble, Giant Germ, Newdoria,
Pyramid Turtle, Sangan, WotBF, Etc. So it may become a
nice anti-searcher for future decks.
Besides Angels effect, it becomes a 1900 attacker in a
Luminous Spark filled Light-Deck, which I have begun
to see people playing with more lately. What more can
I say... probably a lot but you wouldn't want to read
it anyways.
Rating: 2.5
ArtWork: 2.0 - I'm still surprised they used ANGEL in
a card name, I thought that would be one of those
"bad" words UDE/KOJ wouldn't use since they renamed
all the Angel Type Monsters to Fairy. They did remove
the Halo from the picture as well as about a dozen or
more other pictures though. |

Friday 09/26/03: Shining Angel

Light/Fairy
MRL-088

Here's a card I've always liked. Light decks have been
somewhat beefier since Thunder Nyan Nyan came out in
LOD and with a bunch of new and useful Light monsters
coming in Magician's Force, this will see a lot more
play. Basically, Magician's Force does for Shining
Angel what Pharaonic Guardian did for Mystic Tomato.
Like I always say, anything that lets you special
summon is a good thing. Shining Angel is a good card
for keeping field control. You can already bring out
White Magical Hat, Hoshiningen, Banisher of the Light,
Gradius and Jowgen the Spiritualist among other things
(and depending on your deck). But with Magician's
Force, we get Y-Dragon Head and Z-Metal Tank since
they're both 1500 ATK. Add the Witchability of X-Head
Cannon and it's not that implausible (although not
that likely either) to get XYZ-Dragon Cannon onto the
field in 3 turns or so. XYZ isn't the only reason to
use this card. There are other useful Light monsters
coming such as Roulette Bomber, Pixie Knight and Royal
Magic Librarian (or whatever they're renamed to). The
set after Magician's Force adds even more (and
nastier) monsters, but we won't get too far ahead of
ourselves.
1400 ATK isn't going to win many contests but it's
always good for killing the ever-popular Don Zaloog
(while special summoning your own White Magical Hat).
Cards like this also lose playability as you thin out
your deck since you won't have very many monsters to
pull out.
This is a nice utility card. It adds speed to your
deck while allowing you to maintain field control. It
can't kill very many things but that's not really the
purpose of this card.

Light monster's really haven't been giving much
spotlight in the recent months, but I am positive that
will change by the dawn of Magician's Force. First of
all, any card that can let you search your deck and
Special Summon can't be 100% unplayable, because there
is always some way to get a semetic use out of it.
With the coming of Magician's Force, some more viable
searching fuel will actually be possible. You can get
out cards such as: Dragon Head for XYZ, Z- Metal
Caterpillar, and even Royal Magic Library if it
tickles your pickle.
I happen to think Shining Angel will have the dust
blown off of it and will actually see some play, I
mean, How Convenient.
Rating: I will give this sly fox a 3.0/5,
If you are running a straight XYZ deck, than this guy
is someone you shouldn't pass up.

(If you are not familiar with what Sealed Means, let
me give you a quick run down of it. A lot of stores
nowadays are starting to adapt Sealed as a means of
tournament play. One of the big events at the most
recent GenCon had Sealed as the gaming format. I feel
if anyone reading Pojo Card of The Day is fortunate to
have Sealed, you will get some tips on what's more
useable. Sealed play is usually in a draft. Where the
judge seats players around a table, and gives them a
certain number of packs to use. Each person opens 1
Pack, and takes 1 card of their choice, then passes
the pack to the person next to them. This is done till
there are no more packs left. Then, with each of the
picks a person got, they have to make a deck out of
it. This is what Sealed play is.)
Sealed Rating: I like how it's like a Mystic
Tomato, and anything that gives you monster advantage
is something that will definitely be viable. 3.5 |
