Stealth
Bird
Stealth Bird is a pretty effective Monster card. It
doesn't have the
greatest ATK strength, being at only 700, but
because of that, it can be
Searched by Sangan (and brought out by the Tomato),
giving it a little speed
in any Deck that it's in. With 1700 DEF, it can
certainly stand its own, and
unless your opponent's running a pure Beatdown Deck,
there's not much that'd
be able to easily get by it. With a simple Flip
Summon (note that that means
you have to manually flip it from face-down DEF
position to face-up ATK
position yourself), you'll be doing a hefty 1000
damage to your opponent's
LP. Not too shabby. Also note that you can do any of
the following with its
ability to change to face-down DEF position once per
turn:
- Flip it from face-down DEF position to face-up ATK
position then back
face-down again afterwards.
- Flip it from face-up DEF position to face-down DEF
position then back
face-up again. If you do this, it cannot go back to
face-down DEF position
again.

It can be great for Burner Decks, Dark-based Decks,
Winged-Beast-based
Decks, and even Chaos Decks. A pretty good card
overall, really. One of my
own personal favorites to use.

One word can describe Stealth Bird: Pain. Use this
evil bird with swords of revealing light and
(especially) gravity bind and you'll be easily
dealing 1000 damage to the opponent every turn. In
burner decks, remember to look at the opponent's
life points in percentages. Doing this, you'll see
that 1000 damage is 1/8 of their starting life. Not
bad at all, especially since the effect can be used
again and again and again.

Borderline, draft both. Looking over those two
together in a draft shows that you need to get your

Monday:
Stealth Bird
For the most part, welcome to Burn Week. This card
falls into the category of the "Flip/Attack/Flip
back F/D" monsters. This one's effect really isn't
that bad considering everything else that has that
requirement.
This monster cries to be put in a stall deck. It's 3
stars, so it checks under Gravity Bind. It's also
under 1500 ATK, so it can attack through Messenger
of Peace. If your opponent can't do anything else to
stop you from using this effect, that's 1,000 damage
per turn. And in a deck already using other Burn
cards, that won't be many turns.
But for tournament gameplay...this card isn't so hot
(and wasn't meant to be). You HAVE to be able to
protect your Magic and Trap cards from the big six
(3 MSTs, Heavy Storm, Harpie's Feather Duster, and
Breaker's counter). There's so much monster negation
(Exiled, DDWL, Scientist) and Magic/Trap removal
(The big six) that keeping this on the field for
more than one turn may pose a challenge in and of
itself.
If you're playing stall, you may want 1 or 2 of this
guy. Otherwise, your better bet is Poison of the Old
Man for quick burn.

Monday: Stealth Bird
This is one of my personal favorites. Right off the
bat you notice a few things: it has 700 ATK (which
isn't great, but it could be worse), 1700 DEF
(relatively high), and it s level 3, so it gets
under Gravity Bind. Then there are his effects:
The first is the Guardian Sphinxish flip up, flip
down effect. That s useful; this monster can be flip
summoned, do whatever it has to do, and then go back
down to hide behind the respectable 1700, all in a
single turn.
Then you have the damage effect. 1000 is nothing to
scoff at; in this day with LP payments for Duo,
Confiscation, Scientist, etc running rampant, that
extra 1000 could be (and for me, has been) the
difference between winning and losing. You may think
the chances of pulling it off aren't good, but
against a Control deck (or any Control hybrid), this
will most likely be attacked by something like Don
or Tomato, in which case your opponent loses LP and
then next turn you can smack him for another 1000
(flip from face up D to face down D, then flip
summon you won t be able to flip him back face down
that turn though).
All in all, Stealth Bird is a very underrated
monster, one of the best Burners out there and
certainly worth giving a shot in a casual deck. It s
not for everyone, but if you like Burnage (I sure
do) and you don t mind thinking out of the box a
little, test it out.

Stats:
Stealth Bird is Level 3, making it Gravity Bind
friendly, which we will see is a good thing.
It’s a Dark (which has a lot of support) and
it’s a Winged Beast (which has little support
that matters for this card). It has an ATK of
700, allowing it to slip under Messenger of
Peace, and making it a legal target for the
effects of Sangan
and Mystic Tomato. Its Defense is 1700, too
high for Witch of the Black Forest to fetch it,
but not high enough to block your average 1900
ATK Beatstick.
Personally, I feel either the ATK or DEF could
have been a little higher, but then again, given
some player’s opinions of the card, it might
have made it too good.
Effect(s):
This is the heart of this card. It’s not a Flip
Effect-it requires you actually
Flip Summon it, not
just flip it-attacking the card wouldn’t trigger
the effect, for example. Some people still
confuse this. When you do successfully Flip
Summon it, you inflict a nice 1000 points of
damage to your opponent’s LP. Now, on its own,
this might be kind of lame. Fortunately, they
added the nifty “You can flip this card into
face-down Defense Position once per turn during
your Main Phase.” clause seen on many PGD
cards. So if you can find a way to keep it
alive, the damage can pile up.
Uses/Combinations:
So, how to keep it alive?
Your choice of Messenger of Peace, Gravity Bind,
and/or Chorus of Sanctuary. When
everything has to have less than a 1500 ATK to
declare an attack, 1700 DEF is plenty. When
only level 3 or less monsters can attack, 1700
is still good enough to handle many common
attackers, at least if they aren’t augmented.
And with Chorus of Sanctuary, you get an
effective 2200 DEF, which is enough to block
most level 4 Beatsticks,
except Goblin Attack Force.
Using two or even three of the above leads to a
serious lock down on cards. One might
consider combining this then with
Bowganian, Swarm of
Locusts, and/or Swarm of Scarabs. The Swarms,
when protected in a similar manner, are
incredible removal. Just remember Imperial
Order (especially if you are only using Gravity
Bind) and maybe some Magic Drains. Did I
mention Swords of Revealing Light?
Ratings
Casual:
3/5-Personally, I feel it takes a lot of work to
set up a deck where this card will see repeated
Flip Summons. Outside of such a deck, you will
be probably be doing
good to get 1000 damage out of it.
Tournament:
2.5/5-Here is where the above deck feels the
crunch. Sound too harsh? Probably a difference
in meta-game: I have always considered Injection
Fairy Lily and (running at least one copy of)
Solemn Judgment to be staples. In addition to
the normal Spell/Trap removal, that combination
gives me a sort of “Gravity Bind/Messenger of
Peace”-friendly deck. Then add in the fact that
I still think more people should be running
Raigeki Breaks, and
you see why that set-up seems so fragile to me.
Let’s also not forget that, for the time being,
we still have use of good
ol’ Cyber Jar to spoil that hard set-up
while also special summoning 2-3
beatsticks and
pulling 2-3 spell cards for the average deck.
While the average deck’s set-up
faces more or less even odds of being
aided or injured by a Cyber Jar, those with
great intricacy like a Stealth Bird/Burner have
little hope of a good outcome. Did I also
mention that I am seeing Morphing Jar #2 become
more acceptable as a main-deck card?
Limited:
4/5-Thanks to the combo (which I can’t believe I
missed) for D.D. Borderline, this card, and the
many other Burn cards in this set, they are all
great pulls if you can get Borderline to buy
time.
Summary
Wicked with the right set-up, but to prone to
the “house of cards” syndrome for my tastes.
