ExMinion OfDarkness Thursday:

Bah...we reviewed somewhat good Burn cards before and now we get this. Thanks a lot, Tranorix. (j/k :P)

But on the suckiness of this card, even in Burn, I'm serious. You get a 1200 token afterwards...and if they kill it in battle, they take 500. When looking at effects that are game changing involving LP, it's usually gotta be 1,000 or close to. Wave Motion Cannon, Tower of Babel (yesterday's card), etc...

The good side is that you can set this card in DEF, if they attack, you get that token, and if you need to Tribute it you can. Or, if this card was already set, you can flip it, and tribute both it and the token for a 2-Tribute monster.

Compared to the other cards we've reviewed (and the big one we haven't, Poison of the Old Man) this card just doesn't make enough of an impact to be worth playing. There are better Burn monsters out there for your money.

1.5/5 even in Burn
Otaku

Stats: Cobra Jar is a tiny Level 2 Earth/Reptile.  Level 2 means that it’s Gravity bind compatible, for what it’s worth (wait until you see the attack, which is also pointlessly within Messenger of Peace’s limit as well =/).  Earth has some decent support, but most of it is only useful in a mono-Earth deck, and that usually means using Beast, Warriors, or Beast-Warriors.  I can think of one example of “support” for Reptiles: Ultra Evolution Pill, which let’s you offer one Reptile-type Monster as Tribute to Special Summon a single Dinosaur-Type Monster from your hand.  Meh.  This card’s ATK is a pitiful 600, and the Defense is an even more paltry 300.  The only reason to use this card appears to be its effect, which we will discuss next.  A final note is that this card can be fetched from the deck via Witch of the Black Forest’s, Sangan’s, or Giant Rat’s effects, but Rat would be a waste, cause as we will see, this is a Flip-Effect Monster.

Effect(s): Cobra Jars Flip effect lets you “Place one ‘Poisonous Snake’ (Reptile-Type/Earth/Level 3/1200/1200) Token in Attack or Defense Position on your side of the field.”  Not too great, but fortunately, there’s more: if said token is destroyed as a result of battle, you get to inflict 500 points of direct damage to your opponent.

Uses/Combinations: Maybe in a Dinosaur/Burn deck.  Does such a thing exist?  If so, either flip this on your turn, or let the opponent hit it and flip it for you.  If you flip it, you can use Ultra Evolution pill on one and then use the other for tribute fodder to get, say two Dark Driceratops, or Black Tyranno (or a combination of the two) onto the field, or just use the pill on one the Jar and then normal summon a Hyper Hammerhead?  Note that using the token for Tribute won’t trigger the burn effect.

Ratings

Casual: 2.5/5-Migh help out that Dinosaur deck, a Jar deck, or in a reptile deck.  Those decks don’t seem too good, though.

Tournament: 1.5/5-The same: did I miss something?

Limited: 3/5-More monsters=More Power.  Flip it and tribute the Jar, or let it get flipped and get the token.  They make good tribute fodder, or defense, and the token doesn’t have that bad of an ATK for this format.  Also note that in this format, it will almost certainly die in battle and 500 is like a 1000 with the starting LP being 4000.

Summary

Just not seeing a real use for this card.  If I want near useless Tokens that inflict LP damage when destroyed, I’ll use Ojama Trio to mess with my opponent.

Tranorix Thursday: Cobra Jar

We went back in time for this one, all the way back to Pharaonic Guardian. This is one of the Jar monsters, the least played of all of them. Well, that s simply unacceptable.

First of all, it creates a token; that prevents loss of card advantage. You lose this monster but get an extra one on the field (you don t lose this monster, of course, if you flip it yourself ). This monster has fairly decent stats (for a token) of 1200/1200. It can attack in a pinch, or you can tribute it for something big and evil (yes, you CAN use this token for a tribute summon).

Then there s a nice little bonus: if your opponent kills this token in battle, he takes 500 damage. Hey, there s nothing wrong with that. Sure 500 isn't usually that much, but you never know; you might end up being very grateful for that little extra hit. At the very least you get a mini 1200 defense wall who might end up doing a little damage. I wouldn't recommend this for most decks, but it can t hurt to give it a try.

Typical tournament deck: 2.5/5
Burn deck: 3.5/5
OVERALL RATING: 3/5
