Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon
Welcome to Movie Promo week. We'll be reviewing all
the new promos from the movie, and seeing if any of
them are actually playable.
Lessee...obviously, this thing is incredibly difficult
to summon. On the upside, this card's effect means
that we'll be getting BEUD REALLY soon. We get Cyber
Stein to go with it, and that's a deck archetype.
For a player who summoned this monster normally, they
will have this thing at 4200 at least: 3x BEWD + the
BEUD in the Graveyard. The effect protects it
somewhat, but only against targeting effects. Dark
Hole, Raigeki, T-Virus, etc. still get through. At
least it's SOME protection.
Honestly though, I'd rather just have the BEUD out.
ESPECIALLY if we are getting Cyber Stein.

Monday: Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon
We start the week off with perhaps the most
anticipated card in quite a while, Blue-Eyes Shining
Dragon. The stats are pretty straightforward: It has
an awesome 3000 ATK and an awesome 2500 DEF. Being
Level 10 would normally require you to sacrifice two
monsters to summon BESD; however, his effect prevents
him from being Normal Summoned.
You must offer a Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon from your
side of the field to summon BESD. Right now, this is
impossible to do, as BEUD has not yet been released in
English. It's a fairly big drawback...even if we did
have BEUD, summoning him is pretty difficult unless
you use Cyber Stein (which we also don't have) or
Summoner of Illusions.
That aside, it's protected from effects that target
it, such as Change of Heart, Ring of Destruction, and
Exiled Force. While this doesn't make BESD invincible,
it does give him a bit of an increased lifespan on the
field, which is always a good thing. Also, his ATK
will boost by 300 for each Dragon in your Graveyard.
Run him in a Dragon Deck and expect him to be boosted
by 1000+ every time you summon it, giving him nearly
unmatched stats.
All in all, BESD is a good monster that can and will
have decks built around it; but as the TCG stands now,
it's completely worthless except as binder fodder.

Currently this card cannot be played due to the fact
that at this point and time we don't have Blue Eyes
Ultimate Dragon. Which leads me to believe that we
will either get BEUD soon, or Konami really hates us.
Now for just one moment lets pretend that we are in
the wonderful world of Japan where we have every card
made at our disposal.
There are several ways to summon Blue Eyes Ultimate
Dragon: Cyber Stein, Summoner of Illusions are 2
examples.
But in the case of Cyber Stein, if you're paying 5000
life points to summon your Dragon, you need to make a
decision. Do you want your Raw attack power? or do you
want some protection for your dragon. If you want the
latter, then sacrifice your Ultimate dragon to summon
your Shining dragon which is protected against any
card that targets.
If you manage to actually fusion summon the Ultimate
Dragon then that guarantees your Shining Dragon will
have at least a 1200 boost to its attack (300 for each
Blue Eyes, and another 300 for the Ultimate Dragon)
This card is too difficult to summon for it to be very
effective. His secondary effect of negating targeting
spells is nice and all, but there just aren't that
many cards right now that target monsters. It's still
susceptible to Raigeki or Dark hole.
Being so hard to summon, as well as having no access
to The Ultimate Dragon, Blue Eyes Shining Dragon gets
a 1.5/5.
It's effect is fairly good, but very hard to use.
You'd be better off using The Ultimate Dragon himself. |

Stats:
Supposedly, Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon (henceforth
referred to as BESD) is a Level 10 Light Dragon. Now,
the Level only matters for those cards that reference
level due to one of its effects. As for the
Attribute/Type combination, Light and Dragons are both
well supported: both types can make use of cards (some
in hand, some in the Grave) based on the
attribute/type. The ever-popular and over-played
Chaos deck can make use of it, which counts for
something. In terms of ATK and DEF, it is as strong
as Blue-Eyes White Dragon (or BEWD, as nearly everyone
abbreviates it): 3000/2500, respectively. This isn’t
bad, but for all that effort, why not just run a BEWD?
Effect(s):
This is what kills this card. Not only does it have a
restriction that makes it so that it can only be
Special Summoned, and only through its own
effect. This literally renders the card unplayable,
except for the reasons stated above (being removed for
Chaos food and the like). Why? “This card cannot be
Normal Summoned or Set. This card cannot be Special
Summoned except by offering 1 "Blue-Eyes Ultimate
Dragon" on your side of the field as a Tribute.”
Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon (or BEUD, as it is more
commonly referred), is not available in English yet.
So what you have here, is at best eye-candy that can
be played solely for other cards costs, or a wicked
looking Token (hey, combine with the Japanese Egyptian
god Cards” for the most fearsome sheep tokens
Scapegoat can summon)!
Should BEUD come out soon (with my luck, it will be
right before this is posted), I will actually cover
the rest of this card. First, it has a powering up
effect: plus 300 to your ATK for each Dragon in your
Graveyard. That means that you should be getting at
least a bump up to a 3300 ATK, as BEUD will be in your
discard (even if you cheat to summon it). Assuming
you actually do a proper Fusion Summon, it would be at
4200-still 300 less than BEUD for ATK. So, why run
it? Well, it does have a third effect. This third
effect let’s you negate the effects of cards that
designate BESD. Now, this wording is a bit ambiguous:
do they mean that anything that might mean the
same as the effect of Lord of D (except only applying
to BESD itself)-anything that specifically designates
BESD as a target (like Change of Heart) would be
negated. Not bad, but chances are you would clear the
field to get BEUD out, and as both must Special
Summoned, both can be summoned the same turn. The
second, less likely option is that anything that
affected BESD at all would be negated, meaning your
opponent would have to run over you with a monster in
order to get rid of the thing.
Uses/Combinations:
Scapegoat token. If legal to run
in your deck, Chaos food. Once BEUD comes out,
maybe something to use in a Dragon deck (especially if
the third effect is interpreted in the second manner I
listed).
Ratings
Casual:
1/5 to 4/5-sorry for the ambiguous ratings, but this
is awkward due to having no legal way to get it into
play (heck, who knows if it will be legal to even
include in a deck as dead weight). Once we do, if the
effect works as a personal “Lord of D”,
its not bad, but not
great-a 2/5 that BEWD/Kaiba
enthusiast will “need” to run. If the ruling is the
most extreme version (it basically can only be taken
out by attacking it with a stronger monster), then it
becomes a hard to get out creature that will likely
win the game, making it a 3/5. Now, since that last
score “assumes” a BEUD being released, I figured it
was safe to assume Cyberstein
(see DM7FGD’s article on it
here) a.k.a. Devil Franken would also be out,
which means it can be used in decks in general (I
wouldn’t recommend it, but it could be). Oh, and I
suppose it might be a given for a BEWD/BEUD based deck
(again, assuming the second, extremely potent version
of the third effect).
Tournament:
Just drop the above scores by one.
Limited:
0/5-Even I doubt you will find a way to draft it with
everything needed (hey, my friends and I did promo
drafts in Pokémon, where they were abundant).
Summary
Well, this card may be a hoax. If it’s real, it’s
just another example of blah scheduling in
cards (not sure if UD or Konami would be to blame).
As an actual card, it seems a little
to hard to summon, even if
it has a killer effect). |

Monday: Blue Eyes Shining Dragon
Rated
For: Blue Eyes White Dragon Decks
An
anonymous source has released a hi-resolution picture
detailing the effects and artwork of the four
exclusive Yu-Gi-Oh! movie promo cards. This week kicks
off the promo craze; we'll review cards from the movie
and the exclusive movie packs. The first card is
perhaps the coolest of them all, Blue Eyes Shining
Dragon. It seems to signal the imminent release of
Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon, and appears to be a
devastatingly effective weapon. Is it a deck-worthy
addition to the dragon deck? We will see.
Advantage F/H:
This
is definitely a double edged sword. BESD has one of
the highest attack powers in the game (about
3300-5000) and the ability to negate many cards that
can harm him. Unfortunately, there are several
important factors. First, the process of summoning
Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon (which is required to bring
this out) is a very hand-draining experience. Factor
in 3 fusion material cards and the polymerization card
required to bring him out, and you have 4 drained
cards immediately. If you're going the Cyber Stein
route, you're losing 5000 life points. Either way,
you're losing enough advantage bringing BESD out to
warrant him arguably receiving a zero. His attack and
effect once summoned, however, gives him two points.

Best
Draw for the Situation:
You
never want to draw him, opening hand or end-game,
period. Period. Period. About as dead weight as dead
weight gets. Even more dead-weightier than Mazera
friggin DeVille. 0/10.
Attributes/Effect:
He
might seem great right? 3000+ attack, with a seemingly
invincible attack? On closer look, you'll find that
BESD is actually quite vulnerable. In fact, in the
current pre-ban environment, there are only a handful
of cards he will negate. Change of Heart, Snatch
Steal, Thousand-Eyes Restrict, Ring of Destruction are
probably the few cards that'll actually be deterred by
his effect (Yes, I'm quite sure I missed some :D).
Now, throw in the fact that he's dead weight in your
hand 99% of the time, and the fact that you have to
throw away THREE 3000 attack monsters, or ONE 4500
attack monster for him, and you'll see that he only
gets two points (one for effect, one for attributes).

Dependability:
This
card relies on a Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon on the
field to summon. He can't be used in any other
situation. Even if you do get him out, any card such
as Tribe-Infecting Virus, Raigeki, Dark Hole, Mirror
Force and on and on will kill your hard-earned field
presence. 0/10.
The
Bottom Line:
Garbage, unless you want to run him casually. Great
fun in a casual format, I'll bet.
