Stats:
Theinen the Great Sphinx is a massive Level 10
Light/Beast. As it can only be Special Summoned
through its effect, the 10 only matters with Level
checking cards like Gravity Bind. The Attribute/Type
combination is pretty good: Light has solid support,
and means that this can be Chaos food. The Beast-type
gives it access to a few nasty cards that I’ll briefly
touch upon later. We now come to an impressive 3500
ATK score. This card is stronger than a pumped up
Lily! What, that’s a major accomplishment, when you
think about it. Isn’t it annoying when you get
something into play and your opponent can drop a low
level monster and still plow over it? It also has a
massive 3000 DEF-lower could have made it “Witchible”,
but as you’ll see, it’s good to be big for a Beast…
Effect(s):
Okay, the super horrid, nearly ruins the card
part-this card can only be Special Summoned, and only
through its own effect. That effect states that it
can only be Special Summoned when Andro Sphinx and
Sphinx Teleia are both destroyed at the same time on
your side of the field, and you need to pay 500 points
too. The one, possible upside? It might be a
“Multi-Trigger” effect, meaning you could use it on
your opponent’s turn. If it is, that really helps.
If not, it’s not so happy.
Wait, there’s more. This card has a second effect.
The turn you summon it, you can burn a measly 500 LP
to jack up its attack-by 3000! Not too shabby, but is
it enough?
Uses/Combinations:
Well, maybe for a Sphinx-based Suicide Beast Beatdown.
I don’t know if I’d actually bother with
Megamorphs, but the beast
theme itself is a good idea. I
mainly say “Suicide”
because you should expect to burn a lot of LP with the
deck. Now, getting the set up will be tricky,
but if you do get it, it can be pretty snazzy. IN the
“banless” format, it’d be
pretty crazy, but assuming you can get this in hand,
Painful Choice can dump the other Sphinx Siblings-are
they siblings-I haven’t seen anything about the movie
so I just used it for alliteration? Anyway, first
clear the opponent’s side of Spell/Traps. Monsters
too, if you use Pyramid of Light later… Then Painful
Choice those two to the Graveyard, and then find a way
to remove them (sorry, incomplete Spoiler for me, so I
don’t know their Attributes-but we know there is
something that could do it).
Now Dimension Fusion. Now use some card
combination to nuke them (Dark Hole, Torrential, or
activate and destroy a Pyramid of Light). Summon
Theinen. Pay to pump it
up by 3000. Now use Nature’s Wild Release or
Megamorph. Kill the
opponent unless they have a
Kuriboh. If they do, consider using
RoD to make the game a
draw. Now, there are more cards that can be fit in,
sometimes in place of others. IF you can’t
RoD for the win, Mystical
Wok and roll, baby! ;) If you used the effect and
Nature’s Wild release, that’s a gain of 9500 LP.
It’s
a Beast, so Enraged Battle Ox could let you ignore
clearing your opponent’s monsters…
Ratings
Casual:
4/5-I think it will be
crazy fun, and actually kind of effective.
Tournament:
3/5-This is probably going to be at least a fun,
crazy, third tier deck, maybe second. I really doubt
first tier (control or chaos).
Limited:
0/5-Do I need to explain that it is a movie promo, and
can’t be drafted?
Summary
I
honestly think this is a fun “Timmy” card that might
actually work out as sort of a poor-beast’s “CED” for…
um… beast decks. |

Friday: Theinen the Great Sphinx
Rated
For: Sphinx Deck
Theinen the Great Sphinx, an ultra rare
from the movie pack, is one of the most powerful
monsters in the game. Of course, he's also very, very
difficult to summon. There seems to be a disturbing
trend towards restrictive summoning requirements,
requirements that make most of these cards
unplayable.
Advantage F/H:
Theinen is, for all intents and purposes, the
strongest monster in the game. Well, for a turn at
least. He'll come straight out of the gate with 6500
attack. Unfortunately, keep in mind you're using 3
cards, at best, to summon him (two sphinxes, pyramid
of light). He's also going to be dead weight in every
other situation. BESD took a big hit for such
restrictive requirements; Theinen does too. He gets a
2/10.
Best
Draw for the Situation:
Nope,
you never want to draw him period.
0/10.
Attributes/Effect:
A cost
of 1000 life points to bring out for 3 cards. Dead
weight 99% of the time. This guy gets a point for
having such a high attack.
1/10.
Dependability:
No.
0/10.
