Wednesday:
Familiar Knight
I really don't see this card as anything more than
taking up the space of a Japanese promo we should
have had a long time ago.
1200/1400 is subpar -- if it loses to a Control
monster, it's lost some playability in my eyes
already. The effect would be great -- if it were
only for you. But your opponent, most likely playing
90% the same deck as you, will also have a Level 4
monster in their hand they can summon. Even if this
WAS only you, this is -1 hand advantage to use the
effect -- and if your opponent has a way to deal
with that, then that's one step closer to the Yata-lock,
or just topdecking if post-ban.
Then again, I don't feel too bad about Warrior NOT
getting another uber-card...

Wednesday: Familiar Knight
Familiar Knight is an interesting little monster.
Being a DARK, Level 3 Warrior with 1200/1400, it's
searchable by just about everything: Freed the
Matchless General, Reinforcement of the Army, Witch
of the Black Forest, Sangan, and Mystic Tomato. 1200
is enough to deal a little damage if necessary and
allows FK to attack under Gravity Bind, Messenger of
Peace, and Level Limit – Area B.
The effect is quite nice. If it's killed in battle,
you get to Special Summon a Level 4 monster from
your hand. The drawback? So does your opponent. Take
into consideration, however, the fact that your
opponent may not have a Level 4 monster in his hand
whereas you, if you summon/set Familiar Knight,
probably do. In the right deck, this card can be
very effective; it's one of the best ways to summon
Rare Metal Dragon, the strongest playable Level 4.
Summon that and chances are whatever your opponent
summons will NOT be able to match it.
All in all, Familiar Knight has quite a bit of
potential and will most likely see play in Warrior
decks as well as some 4-star Beatdowns, for the
simple fact that he can summon Rare Metal Dragon
easily.

Stats:
Familiar Knight has a good name. Not because of
the picture (haven’t seen it), but because the
effect will often bring forth a familiar face…
but I am getting ahead of myself. Familiar
Knight is a Level 3 Dark/Warrior. This means it
has quite a bit of support, and manages to slip
under Gravity Bind and Level Limit-Area B (which
should at least see play in the Ban format).
So, there have to be some downsides. First, we
have a low 1200 ATK. On the bright side, it
does slip under Messenger of Peace (which is
seeing play in decks again), as well as keeping
it a legal target for the effects of Sangan of
Mystic Tomato. Then we come to a much better
1400 DEF. Why is that better? Well, 1500 would
have been ideal, as it blocks nearly all common
support monsters, but all I can think of that
gets past the 1400 is D.D. Warrior Lady, so it
is still good for that. Of course, I am taking
into account that it has an effect, since it
would be pretty sad otherwise. ;)
Effect(s):
The effect seems at least moderately useful:
when this thing bites it in battle, each player
gets to Special Summon a Level 4 Monster from
their hand. So in the normal environment, with
all it’s control, chances are you opponent won’t
have much of a hand anyway, and you have a
decent shot at getting the only free summon.
With bans, your opponent will probably also get
a monster… but this could be used to trick them
into depleting their hand…
Uses/Combinations:
Looks like a good idea for Warrior decks-they
just love swarms. Set this, and if they kill
it, that’s one step closer to the oh-so-annoying
Marauding Captain-Lock. If it’s your opponent’s
last attacker that hits, consider bringing out
Exiled Force or Tribe… or a Goblin Attack Force
and summon one of those the next turn. It’s not
mind blowing, but used right, it will lead to a
serious field advantage at the cost of a little
card advantage.
Ratings
This is one that you should add 0.5 for using
without Bans-your opponent may be afraid to
summon for fear of depleting their hand, or you
may have already depleted it.
Casual:
3.75/5-All around a solid card, as most decks
have a good deal of Level 4 Monsters in them.
Tournament:
3.25/5-Harder to use here, but not something to
be ignored.
Summary
Good card, especially in conjunction with
tomorrow’s card…

Wednesday: Familiar Knight
Rated For: Level 4 monster based decks.
It's
Familiar Knight. Oddly named, is it because he works
for a Witch? Or is it perhaps because he is
familiar? I have no idea. Anyways, this card
deserves to have a deck based around him, featuring
the other exclusive promo card Rare Metal Dragon and
perhaps even Terrorking Archfiend! How well would a
deck run with this guy? Let's take a gander!
Advantage F/H:
Notice that the text reads "each player can." This
means that you'll be able to control the flow of the
effect, springing your cards on the opponent when he
has no clue what's going on. With powerful,
restrictive summoning cards such as RMD and TKA, you
should dominate the field in no time at all. This is
a card that can definitely lead to field advantage
of some sort. Unfortunately, it's rather spotty
effect that may benefit your opponent, coupled with
its weak attack give it a
5/10.
Best
Draw for the Situation:
This
card works better when you have a full hand. Then,
you can actually take advantage of this guy's
effect. He'll work to suicide (prompting ambushes by
2000+ attack monstrosities) but can actually hurt
you (let's say your opponent brings out a witch or
something). Anyways, this is a decent draw, I
suppose. When top-decking, however, he'll only help
you lose faster through swarmage.
5/10.
Attributes/Effect:
The
question is, why would you run this card over Mystic
Tomato/Shining Angel? Oh, I see! Because you want to
bring out TKA and RMD! Cool plan buddy! He's
inferior to both those cards, but in his own deck,
he actually gets a pretty solid score, marked down
by his weak stats and double-edged effect.
8/10.
Dependability:
First, he relies on you having a suitable level 4
monster in hand. Second, he relies on having a clear
m/t zone of your opponent's (to maximize damage and
get his effect). Third, he relies on being destroyed
by battle. Quite an unlikely combination of factors,
yes? Even when all three fall in line, your opponent
will often benefit, too.
3/10.
The
Bottom Line:
Is
the Exclusive pack filled with garbage? Yes indeed!
A
BAD Score: 21/40= 53/100
Cards it combos with:
Rare
Metal Dragon, Terrorking Archfiend. |
