Thestalos
the Firestorm Monarch
Super Rare

this card is Tribute Summoned successfully, randomly
discard 1 card from your opponent's hand to the
Graveyard. If the discarded card was a Monster Card,
inflict damage to your opponent's Life Points equal
to the Level of the monster × 100 points.

Another Monarch. Thestalos is a great heavy-hitter for
Burn decks (which is flawed logic, since you'll want
to bind most of the time in burn decks) that follows
the last two in terms of card advantage - no loss
for tributing your monster. It follows Mobius'
example in that it offers a bit more than 1 for 1,
as you can do a bit of damage while Tributing. The
only reason, however, I would play this in a Burn
deck, is because of its stats, not its effect.
Although doing damage as a result of discarding your
opponent's cards is fun, the damage this card does
is too miniscule to deserve noting. If it were 200,
great. 300, nearing broken. 150 or 250, excellent.
200 would have been a good balance for this. 400 is
a bit much. But its stats are great for many burn
decks... Pyro/FIRE helps out a lot of Burn cards, as
mentioned earlier this week.
In burn:
3.6/5 Traditional (control dominates here)
3.9/5 Advanced (I just can't give it a 4 for stats
alone)
I'm sorry for short reviews this week, but I am not
a burn kinda guy, and therefore my reviews are
skewered.
NOTE: At Gencon SoCal today-Sunday. :)

Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch
Thestalos is my favorite card from Rise of Destiny.
Sure, most people will dismiss him as worthless, not
as good as the other two (well, three, now that we
have an EARTH one in Flaming Eternity) Monarchs. But
Thestalos has potential, and in the right Deck, he
can be amazing.
2400 ATK is good for one tribute. It's not great,
but it's good; it's the standard. The effect only
works when he's tribute summoned, but it's a great
effect. You get a free random discard from your
opponent's hand! It's like attacking with Don Zaloog,
only you don't have to attack. Summon Thestalos and
bam, your opponent's hand is one card smaller. Throw
in Magic Thorn (I believe I mentioned Thestalos in
my review of that card) and your opponent takes 500
damage for it too. He's a great tribute for Control
Decks, simply put; his high ATK is an intimidating
presence on the field, and he reduces the opponent's
hand size.
The damage effect is more of a "hey, we could add
this little effect to that guy and he still won't be
broken" thing. So they added it, and Thestalos is a
little better. Granted, you won't be doing heavy
damage with it; discarding an Archfiend Soldier will
do 400 damage, a Chaos Monster will do 800 damage, a
Gate Guardian (which I doubt you ll see in
tournament play) will do 1200 damage. Discarding a
Spell or Trap will do none. It's okay, but it's not
the real reason to run Thestalos. Run him if you
want a strong monster that contributes to hand
control; run him in that crazy Burn-Control Deck
with Magic Thorn!
Traditional CCCC: 3/5
Traditional Burn-Control: 3.5/5
Advanced Burn-Control: 4.5/5

Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch
Our final card this week is the third of the
Monarchs and his name is Thestalos.
Stats: Like all the Monarchs, Thestalos has the ATK
and DEF of 2400 and 1000, allowing you to search for
it with Sangan. Both stats are good for a Level 6
monster, so Thestalos gets some brownie points. He’s
a FIRE monster, hence the name Firestorm. He’s also
a Pyro monster, giving him a few uses available with
the release of RDS. Stats – Good.
Effect: Also like all the Monarchs, Thestalos gets
his effect when he is successfully Tribute Summoned.
When this happens, randomly discard 1 card from you
opponent’s hand to their Graveyard. If that card was
a monster, you do damage to their Life Points equal
to the monster’s Level x 100. Now on average, you’ll
be doing a maximum of 600 damage to your opponent,
but 600 damage is still damage, so it is a welcome
effect. But the main reason the effect is helpful is
because you’re discarding one of your opponent’s
cards, and who doesn’t love that? Good monster + a
discarded opponent’s card + potential damage to
their Life Points? What’s not to love? Sure the
effect isn’t as useful as the other two monarchs,
but it’s still pretty good.
Effect – Good.
Combos: Not a lot of combos with Thestalos. Randomly
discarding is randomly discarding; you can’t plan
ahead.
Usability: Unlike Mobius and Zaborg, Thestalos
doesn’t have a good enough effect to make him
eligible of being thrown into any deck you want him
to be in. He of course fits in a Burn Deck, but the
effect won’t be worthwhile most likely. And
hopefully someday soon it will be possible to make a
Monarch Deck. A fourth Monarch was just released in
Japan, leaving only two more possible Monarch
Attributes.
Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch has a good effect,
but the effect isn’t up to par with the other two.
Advanced Format: 3/5. Burning and discarding are
fun, but Thestalos doesn’t make them worthwhile.
Traditional Format: 3/5. Burning and discarding are
fun, but Thestalos doesn’t make them worthwhile.
Overall: 3/5.
Art: 2.5/5. I like Mobius and Zaborg better.

Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch
...and we finally get to RDS's Monarch.
As we've seen starting with Zaborg, every Monarch
starts off with "When this card is successfully
Tribute Summoned", and so far they all have 2400
attack.
This card's effect is par -- not too bad, but not
great. Instead of hitting a monster or 2 M/Ts, it
gets a card from the opponent's hand. The damage
done if the discarded card is a monster is minimal,
but a nice slight boost. The Thestalos player
typically won't win based on his burn damage, but is
looking to limit the opponent's options in hand.
The card works well in a deck that uses Don Zaloogs
or Spirit Reapers to discard from an opponent's
hand.
Conclusion: If you have a tribute slot open in a
Control deck, try him out -- although it's rare
you'll have that many tribute slots in a Control
deck to begin with.
Traditional: 3.75/5 (hands deplete quicker here,
meaning his effect hurts more, especially if done on
the same turn Delinquent Duo was played...)
Advanced: 2.5/5 (Much higher hand size, games tend
to go on longer, so it doesn't hurt nearly as much.)
