Tuesday - Despair from
the Dark
Two days in a row?
Wow.
For today's look into
"What You Don't Want To Discard From Your
Opponent", we look no further than Arroga...Despair
from the Dark.
DCR-023
Despair from the
Dark
Dark/Zombie/Effect/8/2800/3000
When this card is sent directly from your hand or
Deck to your Graveyard by your opponent's card
effect, Special Summon this card to your side of
the field.
Common (most
likely Short Print)
For the daily
comparison to a Magic: The Gathering Card, this
beast finds himself compared to Arrogant Wurm from
Torment. If you've been playing Magic since
then (I sure haven't =/), you know about U/G
Madness decks that use Wild Mongrel, Basking
Rootwalla, and Arrogant Wurm, as well as other
assorted stuff. When Arrogant Wurm was
discarded, its Madness ability let you pay a mana
cost (discounted from its CMC) to put it into play
instead. Despair from the Dark essentially
trades trample and not being able to
be played if you discard it from your effect
for being able to be played for free
if discarded by your opponent and being
an absolute HOUSE . In
other words, he turned into comparatively a 7/8
Basking Rootwalla. That's pretty nice.
In terms of playable
monsters, this guy almost breaks the scale.
For two tributes, 2800/3000 is BIG. I would
definitely offer two monsters to get this guy into
play. He runs over almost every monster
frequently played, and if worst comes the worst,
he can successfully defend against a Blue-Eyes
White Dragon (but how often will that happen?).
Of course, we won't be
summoning him that way, now will we?
If your opponent feels
so inclined to use a hand/deck discard effect, and
you're running this guy, there's an ever so slight
chance that they could pick this guy, and will not
be pleased when they've just summoned a 2800/3000
monster for you.
Or, there's always the
more traditional way: Dump and revive. Being
a Zombie, he gets twice the revival power in the
form of 3 Book of Life. With Vampire Lord
now restricted ;( ;( ;(, it's actually worth
playing this guy in a competitive Zombie deck, as
Zombies can use all the big bodies it can get.
Of course, there will
be times where this guy will pick a bad time to be
stuck in your hand, or you'll topdeck him and not
be able to play him. That happens with
basically all high-level monsters. However,
should your opponent feel so inclined, they can
use their Don Zaloog or Delinquent Duo to bring
him onto the field. They may also think
twice about using Drop Off on you...
All I can say is, if
you're playing a dedicated Zombie deck, I would
highly consider this guy. However, I would
only play with 1 in the main deck and 1 in the
side deck at most, because you don't want TOO many
high-level monsters in the same deck, unless
you're maxing out on Call of the Mummy, that is...
Casual: 3.8
Get ready to rekindle
your inner Timmy from M:TG. (OK, I'm going
to stop the M:TG comparisons now.)
Tournament:
3.5
Definitely not a bad
pick, especially in a Zombie deck. However,
I would only use him in a Zombie deck. Fear
from the Dark would be a better pick if you wanted
to use either of them in any other type of deck
(preferably in the side deck)
Draft: 4.8
I believe drafting
this is similar to saying "I win".
He's the biggest creature in Dark Crisis, and
there aren't a whole lot of destroy effects in the
average Draft.

Despair from the Dark
is obviously one of the more powerful
Zombies. It's too bad that the DEF is so high.
It would of been nice to have the option to
Pyramid Turtle this Monster into play.
Irregardless, it's
still a decent Side Deck card and a solid card for
some Zombie based decks. Just be careful when
siding this versus Control, as you will often find
yourself top decking it at terrible times.
Whenever Deck Destruction gains popularity, that's
when Despair from the Dark will have an indefinite
use.
You could always go
the straight Zombie route. Which includes three
copies of Book of Moon as well as the other basic
revival cards. The only problem with this option
is that with Vampire Lord restricted to one, a
straight Zombie deck loses a lot of its
Field advantage.
2800 ATK is some good
in Limited. In this format, it shouldn't be too
difficult to manually Summon a two-Tribute
Monster.

Despair from the Dark
Dark/Zombie - Level 8 - 2800/3000
Effect: When this card is sent directly from your hand or Deck to your Graveyard by your opponent's card effect, Special Summon this card to your side of the field.
Despair from the Dark's a pretty good and fun to use Monster card. It's usually card you'll want to rely on in hopes of it getting sent to the Graveyard from your Hand or Deck by your opponent, so you can get an easy and free Summon with it. Two-Tribute Monsters aren't too widely played, but Despair From the Dark could be one worth using. Very often will your opponent be using Hand/Deck Destruction tactics, and that's where this guy comes in handy. And with 2800 ATK and 3000 DEF, it's certainly a Monster to be reckoned with.
Your opponent uses Delinquent Duo? (Or some other discarding card, such as Zaloog, etc.) Well, get rid of the Despair from the Dark and bring it right back to your side of the Field. Despair from the Dark also works against Chaos Emperor Dragon. I myself would consider Fear from the Dark a little better than Despair, just because it's not as useless if you can't Special Summon it by its Effect. Both cards can be very good for Zombie Decks, Dark-based Decks, and Side Decks.

Simply amazing. As recent as last week, these were EASILY viable in tournaments pre-restrictions. Why? Zombie decks FLOODED the scene, with 3 Vampire Lords necessitating multiple Book of Lifes, which in turn mean this card is a 2800 easily-revived BEAST. But also, it is a solid anti-control tech card, and here is my review:
Pros:
+Forces opponent to think twice about Delinquent Duo, Drop Off, Don Zaloog, Vampire Lord, etc
+2800 Zombie beatstick
+common, it’s easy to get your hands on
Cons:
-2 Tribute monster won’t normally be summoned.
-Must be by opponent’s card effect (obv)
-as always, something huge can be used against you -_-
Combos/Tr1x:
*Leave this as the only card in your hand at all times possible. If your opponent plays Confiscation or attacks with a Don Zaloog/Spirit Reaper this is immediately summoned.
*Play this in a zombie deck and you can EASILY summon it via book of life. Wow, a 2800 Beatstick with a possible three extra monster reborn in your deck. Broken.
Okay, it’s plain and simple. Control decks run rampant. Hand sizes decrease more quickly with each match. There need to be answers to slow down control, and as far as this card is concerned, it is not only a speed bump, but a roadblock.
Obviously, this isn’t for every match up. For instance it would be less useable against beatdown, a near dead draw (unless you manage to painful choice it into the grave to be reborn later, still a GREAT tactic for getting use out of a 2800 atk monster).
But against control, it’s a whole bucket of wonders. If they run drop offs/vampire lord (and happen to be stupid and call ‘monster’ with lord’s effect o_O), make sure this card stays in your deck.
Or, if they run heavy discards like Don Zaloog and its variants such as white magical hat and spirit reaper, in conjunction with the random discards of delinquent duo, get this baby in your hand FAST. It is an EXCELLENT deterrent to control decks of this type (unfortunately, it hurts me a lot ;P).
Think about it. Whether or not they grab this card with a delinquent duo, you can still discard it and stop their first wave of attacks, while thanking them for summoning him before you even got a turn. Then they must in turn destroy it, too. And the more of these babies you pack, the more likely this is to happen. I’ve seen the (unlikely) situations where delinquent duo has hit both a despair from the dark and a sinister serpent. In this case, the opponent paid 1000 LP to summon a 2800 gargantuan on the other side of the field. LoL. And, by just keeping this in your hand, against a Don Zaloog, you make your opponent fear attacking your hand, whether or not you actually HAVE this in there or not, as they know you play it and thus have a chance. This is a good way of protecting other great cards in your hand, like Raigeki, from being hit by a Don-like effect. And go ahead, say that “they could just use don’s second effect instead”. Yea, and they can hit the despair from out of your DECK this way. Either way, it makes life a mess for your opponent.
And oh yea, try this out in zombies. Pack some reapers, turtles, and a v-lord with a couple “despairs” cards. Add 3 book of life. Enjoy, etc. In general, a great card to try, certainly something that changes the way control decks must be played (I.e. using forceful sentry before any delinquent duo - this is huge).
Ratings:
Constructed - 2.6/5 depends on what deck it is used in.
Limited - 3/5 a rather large beatstick. Just forget about the effect. Take it cuz it’s huge.
