Thursday: Night Assailant
Today we're back to AST, reviewing a very popular
Common, Night Assailant. The stats aren't very
impressive; 200 won't kill much and 500 won't defend
from much. But Assailant is obviously played for his
effects.
The first is very nice, really; it's an upgraded
Man-Eater Bug Flip Effect (upgraded because you
aren't forced to kill your own monsters if your
opponent has none). While considered outdated, this
effect can certainly be useful in a pinch; at the
very least, it will be unexpected.
The second effect is what makes Assailant so
popular; if he's sent from your hand to the
Graveyard (note: SENT, not necessarily discarded),
you get to return a Flip Effect monster from the
Graveyard to your hand (this includes other Night
Assailants, but you can't return the same one that
was just sent). What does this mean? Use
Tribe-Infecting Virus to kill your opponent's
monsters while getting Magician of Faith or Cyber
Jar back into your hand. Use Graceful Charity and
the cost is only one card to discard. Use against
your opponent's hand destruction, and use it with
and against Chaos Emperor Dragon to ensure you have
some protection for the next turn.
If you have two Night Assailants, pretty much every
discard becomes free. Whenever you discard one, just
get back the other. This card is, simply put, very
useful. The Flip Effect only sweetens the deal. I'd
strongly recommend giving this guy a try in
tournament decks, as well as Fiend Decks
(remember...you can even get back Slate Warrior).
Typical tournament deck: 4/5
Fiend deck: 4.5/5

Thursday:
Night Assailant
The most broken common that won't see play for a
month because no one's copied it yet.
On its own, it looks just like a crappy version of
Man-Eater Bug...and this is where most players will
dismiss it. But it's also anti hand-control! And
it's also discard bait like wh0a.
Let me explain...
Get one Night Assailant in your hand and one in the
Graveyard. Summon Tribe-Infecting Virus. Your
opponent has Jinzo, Gemini Elf, and Mad Dog. Discard
Night Assailant, call Machine. Jinzo dies. Assailant
went straight from hand to GY; pull the other
Assailant...call Spellcaster, it dies, oh lookie,
its effect of being discarded triggers again...
It's also been ruled that if two of this card go to
the Graveyard simultaneously, they can retrieve each
other! (Graceful Charity, draw 3, discard 2 Night
Assailants, they both come back to my hand...) It
just can't retrieve itself.
Try packing your side-deck with 3 of these, some
Magic Jammers, Painful Choice (if you aren't already
running it), and any other cards you wanted to use
before but had a discard cost.
...and even if you don't get the other Night
Assailant into the Graveyard...wouldn't it be great
to have your opponent Duo your Fiber Jar, discard
this, and get the Fiber Jar back?

Night Assailant
I managed to pick one of these up. They work really
well for me.
Pros:
It's got an Anti-Control effect. I'm not sure if you
could just bring this card back with it's effect.
For example, you play Duo and pick it. I'm not sure
if you could immediately retrieve the selected Night
Assailant, or would you have to pick another. I've
never run into this, but I'm still wondering. It
still let's you get back Fiber, Cyber, Magician of
Faith, etc... That's not a bad effect. Here's
another important effect. It can destroy creatures.
It's the new Man-Eater Bug. Not bad, eh?
Cons:
It's a Flip Effect creature, which means Nobleman of
Crossout owns this card. I guess the fact it only
destroys your opponent's creatures is bad because
you couldn't destroy a Snatch Stolen creature,
Change of Hearted creature, or your own Witch,
Emissary of the Afterlife, or Sanga to get the
effects. You opponent also ahs to discard this card
from your hand to trigger that part of his effect,
too.
Overall, I give Night Assailant a 7.7/10. It is a
very versatile card. I would play it if you have
some flip effects. |
