ExMinion OfDarkness Thursday:
Zaborg the Thunder Monarch

Metamorphosis's new best friend.

Pretty much everyone who plays a m0rph deck wants to get Balter out -- but there aren't that many good 5-star monsters out. Airknight qualifies...but if you're just going to summon and then m0rph, this card's the better option. You sacrifice for it, kill something with its effect, then morph into Balter. It's a better return than doing this with Airknight.

One-tribute 2400 attackers have a variety of effects nowadays -- sadly, all you usually see getting played is Jinzo. But you may want to take Jinzo out and use this if you're running m0rph.

3/5
Tranorix Thursday: Zaborg the Thunder Monarch

Zaborg is a very underrated monster, one that I'm surprised isn't seeing more play. He has a nice, solid 2400 ATK and a Witchable 1000 DEF, making him a decent tribute monster right away.

The effect is certainly a useful one. Tribute something for Zaborg; kill a monster. Is your opponent slamming you into the ground with a Jinzo and Airknight, and all you have protecting you is a worthless Spirit Reaper? Bring out Zaborg. Jinzo...dead. Airknight...dead. Your opponent...500 LP lower. What's not to love about that? The only downside is that if Zaborg is Tribute Summoned and there are no other monsters on the field, he must kill himself.

I also feel Zaborg has a place in Chaos decks; being LIGHT, he can serve as an alternative to the ubiquitously-played Airknight. I actually feel he's a better choice for some decks, namely those utilizing Metamorphosis. While you can certainly tribute Airknight for Balter, it's probably a better choice to tribute Zaborg. Why? If you use Airknight, you don't gain any advantage; but if you use Zaborg, you kill a monster before bringing out Balter.

All in all, Zaborg is a monster that you may want to consider putting in as your second or third tribute. He at least deserves to be play-tested; you might be pleasantly surprised.

Typical tournament deck: 3.5/5
Metamorphosis field control deck: 4.5/5
OVERALL RATING: 4/5
Otaku

Stats: Zaborg is a Light/Thunder Monster.  Thunder is almost unheard of, but Light is well supported.  As a Level 5, it will be a bit harder to get into play.  Fortunately it has an ATK of 2400 with a DEF of 1000, searchable by Witch of the Black Forest.  On its own, this isn’t enough to make it good, but it keeps it “playable”.

Effect(s): A simple effect that you won’t get all the time, if you Tribute Summon it you get to nuke a monster on the field.  Nothing mind blowing, but it can be useful.

Uses/Combinations: If you don’t have Airknight Parshath but just have to run a Light deck, this would be pretty good.  Otherwise, pass on it.

Ratings

Casual: 2.5/5-Not great, but workable.

Tournament: 2/5-A bit too weak in the effect department.

Limited: 4/5-Great here-get a big monster and have a good shot at making sure you get a clear shot.

Summary

Oh so close.

MerrilHess Zaborg the Thunder Monarch

This card sucks when played against you. It's great if you play it.

Pros:
Monster removal is always a good thing. 2400 attack is good too. 1000 defense makes him searchable by Witch. But the best part is his effect. When you Tribute Summon him, you can destroy a creature on the field. Your opponent topdecks Fiber and you know it. You topdeck this and have a Sinister facedown. Can you say g0dly? I like the effect, but it can hurt you.

Cons:
You have to offer for it to get it's effect. You can Reborn/Premature/Call him back and get his ability. The worst thing about it is if he is the only creature in the field at the time of his Tribute Summon, you must destroy him. Kind of like Man-Eater Bug.

Overall, I give Zarborg the Thunder Monarch a 8.6/10. It's a very good card, but like all good cards, they have drawbacks.

Thursday: Zaborg the Thunder Monarch

Rated For: Metamorphosis Decks, Chaos Decks, Light Decks, Thunder? Decks

Well Thursday finally brings the first playable tribute monster of the week! Zaborg is yet another card from the new set. Unlike the first three, this one actually packs a solid effect. But is it solid enough? A BAD system will commence.

Advantage F/H: An interesting tribute monster. This one basically "evens" out the field; the monster you tribute for this guy is counterbalanced by the monster he will destroy on the field. Then, you're left with a 2400 attack powerhouse, which equates to field advantage in the environment. Solid. 7.5/10.

Best Draw for the Situation: Let's say they have a pesky face-down monster. Want to know what it is? Simply tribute this guy out and kill it. Or, let's say they have some threat such as Jinzo out on the field. Bring this guy out and kill it. It's great, targeted removal. Unfortunately, if he's the only monster on the field, he has to kill himself. In addition, you might not have monsters to waste! This gets the baseline 5/10.

Attributes/Effect: Everything about this guy screams perfection. He has a 2400 attack, is searchable by Witch of the Black Forest, is a light for Chaos fodder, can be metamorphosized, and possesses a semi-decent monster effect. The fact that his effect isn't the greatest, along with his tribute monster status, brings him down to a 7.5/10.

Dependability: This monster's dependability rating is helter-skelter, based on the fact that the opponent needs a monster on the field. Strictly speaking, a clear field basically means that this guy will have to kill himself. Therefore, you need to both have a monster on your field to tribute and have a monster on their side of the field to take advantage of this guy. While not altogether unlikely, the situational nature of Zaborg brings him down to a slightly below-average 4/10.

The Bottom Line: Airknight, Jinzo, Ha Des, End of Anubis and others remain far superior to this guy. Run him if you're on a budget or something.

A BAD Score: 24/40= 6/10.

Cards he combos well with: Chaos Monsters, Metamorphosis, Witch of the Black Forest
