Thursday - Des Dendle & Vampire Orchis
I'm not a big fan of Unions, mainly because they
aren't as good as they could of made them. If I were
to casually play any sort of Union based deck, it
would be the XYZs, simply because they are a lot
more interesting.
Des Dendle and Vampire Orchis on the other hand, are
really very bland. They don't even seem very fun for
casual play, which is always a negative. Of course
you have to keep in mind that they are both commons,
which _usually_ aren't as viable as rares and foils.
For the price of two specific resources out of your
hand, you get a 1700/1000 monster that can produce
an 800/800 monster token when you successfully
destroy an opposing monster in battle. Worth the
effort? Not in this environment. Monsters like this
simply can't stand up to the current competition,
which lets us know this isn't much more than a
candidate for another casual deck.
Limited is a completely other scene. If you're
during a draft focused on this expansion, it should
be pretty easy to obtain at least one set of both
monsters. A 1700 ATK token producer is a much larger
threat in this format.

Thursday -- Des Dendle and Vampire Orchis
Des Dendle
Plant/Union Monster
Earth/4/300/2000
Once per turn, during your Main Phase, if you control this monster on the field, you can equip it to your "Vampire Orchis" as an Equip Spell Card, OR change it back to a monster in face-up Attack Position. When equipped to a monster by this card's effect, each time that monster destroys 1 of your opponent's monsters, Special Summon 1 "Wicked Plant Token" (Plant-Type/EARTH/1 Star/ATK 800/DEF 800) in Attack or Defense Position. (1 monster can only be equipped with 1 Union Monster at a time. If the monster that this card is eqipped to is destroyed in battle, this card is destroyed instead.)

When this monster is Normal Summoned successfully, you can Special Summon 1 "Des Dendle" from your hand.

This is an odd Union, as it has a built-in Frontline Base. If you have the union in the hand, it's like a Marauding Captain-type effect. It has a built-in Monster generator, but only when destroying other monsters, so Raigeki-ing or Dark Holing + this combo wouldn't help you. Des Dendle has a whopping 2000 Defense, so it may actually survive an attack -- EVEN from the more commonly played Dark Balter from a Scientist special summon.
It's better than most other Unions as it has the built-in special summon, but I still think it's underpowered (at least have the union give a 300+ boost like the XYZ pieces.)
Normal: 2.25/5 (Extra monsters (mainly tokens) don't help a lot, and playing out your hand REALLY isn't a good idea.)
After Ban List: 2.75/5 (Without Yata and Duo to fear, bad hand management can be forgiven slightly more. But I would still expect the combo of Marauding Captain special summoning Goblin Attack Force to
occur more than the combo of Vampire Orchis special summoning Des Dendle.) |

Des Dendle/Vampire Orchis
At least maybe until when (and if) King Fairy Truesdale is errata-ed, Plant Decks have gotten a huge shot in the arm. These ho-hum Union monsters have taken on new life in the meantime. It only takes one Normal Summon to get them both on the field, and while the Union gives no boost to Vampire Orchis's ATK, the effect of summoning a "Wicked Plant Token" with 800 ATK is now more useful with King Fairy
Truesdale.
Picture this: with KFT on the field you summon Vampire Orchis, then Special Summon Des Dendle. Form the union, then attack a monster with the union (2200 ATK), then Special Summon the token. Attack with KFT for 2700, then with the token for 1300. It is that easy to do well over 4000 damage in one turn.
What makes them more playable individually is that 2000 DEF is still a tough number to beat... KFT makes it 2500 -- nearly impossible to beat. Vampire Orchis is 1700, easily raised to 2200 with KFT. Throw in your old favorites, the Mystic Tomatoes, Fiber Jar, and a Dreamsprite for making your opponent attack someone they didn't intend to attack, and you have got yourself a bona fide butt-kicking Plant Deck.
3.5/5.0 Well-balanced, but viable only with the right supporting cast. |

Stats:
Des Dendle and Vampire
Orchis are both Level
4, so not Gravity Bind (not that its
played that much) friendly.
Plant monsters are rare, so I suppose that
could be a bonus for these two.
Earth is a strong type and that helps.
These are Union/Effect Monsters, but
we’ll cover that more, later.
Des Dendle has
a decent DEF (2000), but its ATK is a pathetic
300. At
least that means that it works with Sangan and
Giant Rat. Vampire
Orchis has a slightly
sub-par 1700 ATK and 1000 DEF is okay since it
makes this searchable via Witch of the
Black
Forest
.
Card
Text (Effects):
This is where we first get an
inkling that these cards could be useful.
The Union effect from Des Dendle
lets you summon an 800 ATK/DEF
Earth/Plant Token when the equipped Vampire Orchis
destroys an opposing monster in battle.
It also has the normal “If the monster
that this card is equipped to is
destroyed in battle, this card is destroyed
instead” Union-effect.
Vampire
Orchis has its own
effect though: when it is normal summoned
successfully, you can special summon a Des Dendle
form your hand, making it one of the easiest
Unions to pull off.
Uses/Combinations:
Okay, so it is easy to pull off, by why use it?
Toss in Fairy King Truesdale
and Gaia Power and suddenly you are summoning an
1800 attacker when you destroy a monster.
Remember, you probably just ran over their
only monster.
Oh, and then the normal Union tricks.
Ratings-Note,
these cards should be used together, and as such,
ratings are for them that way.
Casual:
3.75/5-Could be the
back up Truesdale
needs.
Constructed:
3.25/5-Same as above, but it has to face the big
boys… er things…
in this format.
Limited:
3.5/5-Not sure how useful the tokens will be in
this format.
The stats are good enough to make them
decent on their own (3/5).
Summary
Nice
to see a somewhat unique concept.
