ExMinion OfDarkness Friday:
Freed the Brave Wanderer

If Chaos didn't exist, this would see play.

A Witchable 1700 that can take out the things stronger than itself. The problem: If people are going to be removing 2 monsters from the Graveyard, they IMMEDIATELY compare the card to Chaos Emperor Dragon and Black Luster Soldier - Envoy, and if it's not as good, it's not worth using.

Plus, I believe 2 monsters is overcosted. They couldn't make it 1 monster, because that would scream for abuse in Light decks, especially with Painful Choice...I would have made it be 2 monsters the first use, and 1 monster for each subsequent use. But still, this card isn't bad if you're playing a Light deck already.

Shining Angels, DDWLs, this, Hysteric Fairy, Soul of Purity and Light (Remember him?), Magician of Faith, Reflect Bounder...Light has a LOT of support and will get even MORE once Ancient Sanctuary hits the shelves. I just still don't think 2 monsters is worth this effect.

3/5
Otaku

Stats: Freed The Brave Wanderer is a Level 4 Light/Warrior [REVIVE THE ORBS!  Wha?  Sorry, wrong game, but a delicious idea for CAC contests].  Since he has no summoning restrictions or requirements, being a Level 4 is a good thing.  Being a Light Monster means some solid support and of course, meaning he can be used for Chaos Food.  Being a Warrior means it has some solid support too.  Light/Warrior hybrids are a bit rare though: only five exist, including this card.  Freed has an ATK of 1700, which isn’t great, but is sufficient to handle a lot of “control” monsters as well as various supporting ones.  1200 DEF is low enough to be a legal target for Witch of the Black Forest, but it could be 1500 and still qualify, so it’s not bad, but it could be better.

Effect(s): Freed has a useful effect, but the cost means that it’s only for specialized decks.  By simply removing two Light Monsters from your discard, you can nuke an opposing face-up monster whose ATK is higher than Freed’s.  So unless your opponent has a 1700 ATK creature, this will clear out most face-up threats.

Uses/Combinations: Like it’s Dark counterpart, Strike Ninja, this card works well when combined with things like Dimension Fusion, you can clear out your normal Beatstick opposition, then bring back the two creature’s you removed.  One might consider using both in Chaos Decks-I don’t run them, and I haven’t played any (what, it’s been busy for Pokémon lately :-P).  Theoretically, it would help by giving more options.  For one thing, I have been working on counters for Chaos creatures… so having something that feeds of the same stuff might be nice.  Remember when using equips and the like that the card text refers to the ATK of Freed, so raising and lowering it can really vary your options.

Ratings

Casual: 3.25/5-Not quite as useful as Strike Ninja, though they might go together.

Tournament: 3/5-Same as above, but here we have the more traditional Chaos decks and control and Beatdown etc.

Limited: 2/5-You can use it to good effect, except that there are almost no good Li9ght Creatures in the set.  Still, there are some, and you might be able to make use of them.

Summary

A bit weak in my opinion, but it still has a niche, and that is better than having to ban it. ;)

Tranorix Friday: Freed the Brave Wanderer

Hmm...the only holo to be reviewed this week is Freed the Brave Wanderer, a Super Rare from IoC.

He's a LIGHT; that's very nice for Chaos decks. He's got a decent 1700 ATK and a Witchable 1200 DEF. He's a Warrior, so he's also searchable by RotA. Now the effect:

Remove two LIGHTS (not so nice for Chaos) to destroy a monster on the field with more ATK than Freed. Nobody's saying this effect can't be useful, but chances are you won't consistently have two LIGHTS to throw away. Late game this card is obviously better than early game, when Graveyards are bigger; but even then there's no guarantee.

It's a useful effect, but it's not a reliable one. And no, you cannot use it on your opponent's turn. Freed gets my lowest rating this week, which just goes to show you that shininess does not always equal playability.

Typical tournament deck: 2/5
LIGHT deck: 3.5/5
OVERALL RATING: 2.8/5
