Fri 10.08.04 - A Cat of Ill Omen
And now, for the Friday card, which is perhaps the most useful in the
bunch, we have A Cat of Ill Omen.
Stats/Cost: Its stats are low, the reverse of yesterday's
stats. 500/300/2 is not going to win you anything. The effect is a
flip, so it's rather slow, but it's no-cost. As with all flip
effects, it's going to have to be pretty g0dly to win a slot in the
deck over generic cards like Magician of Faith or Fiber Jar.
Effect: It pulls out any random Trap card in your deck and
puts it on top. This effect is nice in a Necrovalley, where you
actually might be able to use the card you pull (unlike with Owl of
Luck). Pull out a Rite of Spirit or whatever, and you're set. This
is especially good for decks that focus around one trap card that
happens to be restricted or semi-restricted (read: Last Turn, and soon
to be Reversal of the Light and Dark).
Combos: It is relatively stand-alone, but you can use it with
Reversal Quiz (why?) or Archfiend's Oath for something fun.
Post-Ban: Well, you can search out a specific Trap card.
That's a nice effect. Although your Cat is more likely to be
Nobleman'ed, it is also less likely to die if they don't have a
Nobleman. I'd say it balances out such that it is still slightly
better post-ban, since it will be better support for certain themes.
Ratings:
Traditional:
Any deck: 2/5
Gravekeeper's deck: 2.4/5
Championship:
Any deck: 2.6/5
Gravekeeper's deck: 2.8/5
It's a decent card, and could have some use, unlike most of the other
cards this week.

Friday:
A Cat of Ill Omen
Now this card's a bit better than the owl from
yesterday, as you're not restricted in what kind of
Trap is taken. Whether Necrovalley is out or not,
your opponent gets to see what you took -- so the
surprise factor is lost, and you usually have to
take something chainable -- in Traditional format,
that leaves Call of the Haunted, Imperial Order,
Waboku (maybe), and Rite of Spirit for the common
build of GK decks; for Advanced format, just get rid
of IO.
If Necrovalley is out, then okay, you saved on card
advantage -- basically exchanging your Cat from the
field for a Trap from your Deck going into your
hand. If Necrovalley isn't out, you gave up next
turn's draw to get a Trap card that your opponent
knows of.
Good idea, poor implementation. This card might have
been better if it had said "The opponent doesn't get
to see the card, this card must be kept separate
from the hand so it is verified as a trap, and if it
is placed on the field a counter must be put on it
to signify that it is the previously taken Trap."
Just like the owl, it's a card that new players to
the game (and sometimes, new players to the GK
build) will be tricked into playing, but we won't.
2/5 in Traditional Format (So what if they see you
grab Imperial? With only one MST, it's still pretty
hard to stop.)
1.5/5 in Advanced Format (Meh...it either has to be
chainable or you have to know your opponent used up
all of their M/T removal -- and with people running
different amounts of Mobius the Frost Monarch,
you're never sure!) |

A Cat of Ill Omen
A Cat of Ill Omen is similar to An Owl of Luck in
that they both search for a particular type of card
from your deck, they both can either add it to your
hand or place it on the top of your deck, and they
both work best in a Gravekeeper deck. The stats are,
like An Owl of Luck's, substandard; but A Cat of Ill
Omen also possesses a Flip Effect.
With the Cat, you get Traps. That makes Cat a lot
more versatile than Owl, since any given deck
usually will only run one (or 0) kind of Field Spell
and several different Traps. Which Trap you take
will depend on what you need done at that moment;
take Ring or Ceasefire if you want to end the game;
take Waboku if you need to stall a bit; take Dust
Tornado if your opponent is Burning you to death and
you need to nuke that Level Limit.
In a Gravekeeper deck, A Cat of Ill Omen is a great
choice. You can get Magic Jammer to protect your
Necrovalley; you can get Rite of Spirit to summon a
Gravekeeper. Or you can get any other Trap you might
need. It can also see use in other decks, perhaps
Last Turn – decks that focus on one Trap and need to
get it ready as early as possible. It's definitely
the most playable card reviewed this week.
Traditional – CCCC: 2.5/5
Traditional – Gravekeeper: 3/5
Advanced – Gravekeeper: 3.5/5 |

A Cat of Ill Omen
Hooray! A card with uses!
Stats: With an ATK and DEF of 500 and 300, A Cat of
Ill Omen will not save your Life Points for Long. It
can be searched for by Witch of the Black Forest,
Sangan, and, not under my recommendation, Mystic
Tomato. It’s a DARK monster allowing it the many
uses they have. And it’s a Beast Type, which is not
important for FLIP effect monsters. Stats – Bad.
Effect: The effect I find to be useful; when it’s
flipped, you take one Trap card from your Deck and
put it on top of your Deck. And in the off chance
Necrovalley is on the field, you can add the Trap to
your hand. It’s a useful effect when used correctly.
Effect – Good.
Combos: A Cat of Ill Omen can be used with Tsukuyomi
and the combination of Book of Moon and Book of
Taiyou to add a trap to the top of your Deck
numerous times. Use it with an already activated
Pharaoh’s Treasure to bring it to the top of your
deck. This will allow you to put that desperately
needed card in your Graveyard in your hand the next
time you draw.
Usability: A Cat of Ill Omen is best used in a deck
that focuses on a specific Trap card such as a Last
Turn Deck. Most other decks don’t have enough Traps
for A Cat of Ill Omen to be worth using.
A Cat of Ill Omen is not a card that works well in
an average deck, but is a blessing to decks with
lots of Traps.
Advanced Format: 2/5. FTK decks will be very popular
here, allowing a Last Turn Deck to be rather
successful.
Traditional Format: 2/5. FTK decks are popular here
as well, giving A Cat of Ill Omen a place to work.
Art: 2.5/5. A Black Cat. Nothing special. |

Stats : The final card for this week is A Cat
of Ill Omen. A Level 2 Dark/Beast, its ATK/DEF is
the inverse of An Owl of Luck: 500/300. As a Level
2, it will fit under Gravity Bind and Level
Limit-Area B. Dark means Chaos Food, and Beast has
some solid support in Enraged Battle Ox and
Manticore of Darkness. Searchable via Mystic Tomato
(not recommended for Flip Effects), Sangan, and
Witch of the Black Forest.
Effect(s) : Top deck a trap when this thing
flips. If Necrovalley is in play, it goes straight
to your hand. Pretty good if you ask me: there are
some very nasty Traps available, and even if your
opponent knows they are coming, there may not be
anything they can do about the highly chainable
ones.
Uses and Combinations : Last week we covered
several useful Traps. Many of these are fine in just
about any deck. As such, nearly any deck with room
should consider running this. If you have another
Trap or a Quick Play Spell in hand to bluff with,
you can likely grab any Spell you want and your
opponent will have little they can do to prevent it.
Does your opponent have your deck locked down? Nab a
burn card like Ring of Destruction or Ceasefire; it
might be enough for the win. Is this a priority
card? No, but if you have room, I strongly recommend
you run one or two.
Ratings
Traditional : 2/5-It’s hard to find room for
the card, and there is a good chance that your
opponent can hit it unless you have protection
already set for it.
Advanced : 3.5/5-I am going out on a limb
here. Maybe I am just desperate for something to
salvage this week. I knew many of the reviewers
would balk at it. I believe in being thorough. I
could have spread the duds out, but I like reviewing
pieces of combos. Oh well. I think being able to
pull a big burn Trap out of your deck in this format
is potent.
Limited : 3/5-Somewhat subjective-if you get
a good Trap, take use this. If not, don’t.
Summary
The nightmare ends. Now it’s established that there
is little hope for the Leftovers, except maybe the
kitty. Or maybe I just shouldn’t have done most of
these on the same day. @_@ |
