Tranorix Mobius the Frost Monarch

Yes, today we review Mobius, one of the highly-anticipated cards from Soul of the Duelist, released as both a Super and Ultimate Rare. With an ATK of 2400, Mobius is fairly powerful. Being WATER gives him a nice little ATK boost with A Legendary Ocean (though the star decrease doesn't do much) and being Aqua actually gives him a fun immunity to Tribe-Infecting Virus. Your opponent will be less likely to try to kill Mobius if he'll kill his own TIV in the process, right?

The effect is what makes him so popular. If you summon Mobius via a Tribute Summon (ie: sacrificing a monster on your side of the field, NOT using Call of the Haunted to bring him back from the Graveyard), you can destroy UP TO two Spells or Traps on the field. Note the "up to"; it's optional. You can destroy 0, 1, or 2 S/T cards when you Tribute Summon for Mobius.

With the slight lapse in S/T removal in the Advanced Format, Mobius is being used by some as a supplement (or even alternative) to Jinzo, and as a replacement for Harpie's Feather Duster. Though his effect can be chained to by something like Trap Hole or Ring of Destruction, the likelihood remains that if you use Mobius's effect, you'll hit at least something worth destroying. With all of the Stall Decks running around, Mobius becomes more effective. Destroy that Level Limit AND that face-down Cylinder. Ha!

All in all, Mobius is an effective monster; but he has weaknesses. The fact that he's just a 2400 attacker if not Tribute Summoned does hurt him a bit; and the fact that you may draw him at the wrong time can also detract from his playability. Nevertheless, he should definitely be considered if you need another tribute monster and/or some more S/T removal.

ExMinion OfDarkness Mobius the Frost Monarch

This card was originally going to be in my week, but then that would have left nothing else good from SOD for anyone else to review. (Usually that's what my CotD weeks try to accomplish -- to let everyone who doesn't want to put much effort into searching find out what's broken so they can go rip n00bs for 3 of them.)

This is one of those cards right now for Advanced Format.

Mobius the Frost Monarch reaches out towards the burn deck and extends both middle fingers -- one of which destroys their Level Limit - Area B, the other which destroys their Wave-Motion Cannon with 4 counters on it.

2400 ATK is great for a 1-Tribute monster with an effect such as this. 1000 DEF allows the player to Witch it in Traditional (we all know how many times we've Witched Breaker to kill a M/T, Witching this won't be all that uncommon.)

Remember, the opponent can chain the M/Ts they have to this effect. So the best time to summon him is when they have 2 F/D M/Ts and you're not worried about anything else, or they have 1 F/D M/T and one M/T stopping you (Gravity Bind.)

Let's look at the math on why this guy's absolutely necessary to your Advanced Format Side-Deck.

Burn:
3 Messenger of Peace
3 Level Limit Area B
3 Gravity Bind
3 Wave-Motion Cannon

(12 cards that have to stay on the field for some extended amount of time.)

Anti-burn:
1 MST
1 Heavy Storm
1 Breaker the Magical Warrior
3 Dust Tornado
3 Mobius the Frost Monarch

(HS can take out up to 5 M/Ts, but I'd assume 2 at most because if they have down 3 or more, they'll have protection for them.) Without the Mobius's and banking on 2 M/Ts killed from Storm, that's 7 cards destroyed. With Mobius, that brings the total to 13, tipping the scale (pun intended) in the anti-burn player's favor.
Rip little n00bs forever! Copy decks like there's no tomorrow! Weigh packs or don't buy packs at all!
Traditional: 3/5 (They still have Harpie's, so there's slightly less need here.)
Advanced: 99999 ^ 10....er...5/5.
Snapper Mobius the Frost Monarch

To end this week we have Mobius the Frost Monarch, another one of the highly anticipated cards of SOD.

Stats: Mobius the Frost Monarch has a good 2400/1000 ATK/DEF, allowing you to search for it with Sangan. The ATK is standard for most High-Level Monsters that are currently used, allowing it to destroy most monsters in battle. It’s a WATER monster, giving it uses. But, it is sadly not greatly affected by A Legendary Ocean, forcing it to still require a tribute. It’s also an Aqua-Type Monster; nothing good about that. Stats – Good.

Effect: The Effect is what makes Mobius the Frost Monarch a must have monster; whenever it’s Tribute Summoned, you can destroy up to 2 Spell or Trap Cards on the field. What isn’t to love about the effect? True, it needs to be Tribute Summoned, eliminating the ideal dump and revive way to summon it, but that’s fine. When you get the effect of two Mystical Space Typhoons in the form of a 2400 ATK monster, that drawback is of no importance. Effect – Great.

Combos: There aren’t many I can think of. I guess you could use it with A Legendary Ocean, giving you a Level 5 monster with 2600 ATK that can destroy up to two S/T Cards. That’s not to bad.

Usability: Even though it will clash with the theme, Mobius the Frost Monarch works in all decks with ease. The only question is if you really want to allow that. If you don’t want to put it in your Main Deck, you should at the very least Side Deck it.

Mobius the Frost monarch is a card most people should and will use and or try. If they don’t, I hope they have a good excuse.

Advanced Format: 4/5. Mobius the Frost Monarch is one of the better S/T Card destruction in Advanced Format.
Traditional Format: 3.5/5. There are better choices for S/T Card destruction, but it still has its uses.
Art: 4/5. Very cool looking monster.
Coin Flip The Frost Monarch has been referred to as the DDWL of SoD. The card you NEED to get 3 of, and could quite sanely run 3 of.

Let's look at a few of its better characteristics. First off, it sports something its brother Zaborg does not - Optional effect. Then it goes to sport another cool characteristic of 2 for 1 advantage for the tribute. M/t removal is HUGE because of the removal of MST's in triplets. One of these accounts for a strong tribute monster and two MST. Playing 3 is the equivalent of playing 6 MST and 3 2400's all in one nice little package. The huge downside to this, and to all Monarchs, is that it must be Tribute Summoned. The Frost Monarch, if killed by Ring or Torrential, will potentially take out as much as it came in with, leaving you with no net card loss. If played right, just summoning this can be the equivalent of 2 free card advantage - one monster tributed for you, 2 m/t lost for them and 1 monster killed in battle. This results in field control as well as hand advantage; depleting the options on field depletes options in hand.

All in all, Mobius really is a SOLID monster. His stats are pleasant (with Legendary Ocean out, he can be morphed into a Balter, the ultimate goal of all morph decks, and he is a 2600 attack dual MST for one tribute). The low DEF is a bit of a downer. A Book of Moon or a Tsukuyomi or an Enemy Controller will really hurt you. Try him out in your deck and see if he works if you want to try something that ISN'T Jinzo, and will help you cope with the loss of MST.

I'd give him 4.3/5 post-ban, but 4.1/5 pre-ban in most decks. He's a good monster overall, but Blowback Dragon is Chaos food and we have HFD. I can't really think of a specific deck he'd fit in.
dawnyoshi Mobius the Frost Monarch is one of the better high level monsters to be released lately. Its attack strength is equal to Jinzo, and when tribute summoned, this card can destroy up to 2 spell and trap cards on the field.

In traditional format, this may only come in handy occasionally in a serious control deck. In the advanced format, this is even more useful with the loss of Harpie's Feather Duster and the increase of burner decks that use Level Limit- Area B and Wave Motion Cannon. It's a fantastic card to use in your side deck. In limited, this is also useful as removal of any kind is very hard to come by.

Traditional Format: 2.5/5

Advanced Format: 3.5/5

Limited: 4/5

Friday: Mobius the Frost Monarch

Rated For: Any Deck.

Mobius is a stud. I was sort of iffy on Zaborg the Thunder Monac, but I must admit that the Frost Monarch is getting it done.

In today’s S/T removal starved area, Mobius adds another monster-driven element to Spell-Trap removal. It definitely deserves consideration in your deck with its beefy 2400 attack.

Advantage F/H: This card is absolutely awesome in and of itself, owing to its powerful 2400 attack. The only commonly played tribute monsters that take it down are fiends, Ha Des and End of Anubis; everything else falls to Mobius. He also has an effect, a rather solid one, allowing you to destroy UP to two spell/trap cards. This can definitely create a lot of card advantage for you, allowing you to save up the spell-trap removers. 8/10.

Best Draw for the Situation: He’s always a good choice; usually you’ll want to save him for when your opponent has some traps set, but even without that he’s still a 2400 attack monster. Versatility is the name of the game, and his strong attack and excellent effect combine to create a generally solid draw (for a tribute monster). With no Yata to fear and more lasting field control, tribute monsters are back. 6.5/10.

Attributes/Effect: Great stats, great effect; it also helps that he’s an Aqua type, making them waste their own Tribe to get rid of him :D. What a solid monster!      8.5/10.

Dependability: While he’s not as game-breaking as Jinzo, he sure is more dependable. You can use your own traps and such while he’s on the field. I’d go as far to say Mobius is almost as good as Jinzo is, if your opponent isn’t running chainable traps.   7/10.

The Bottom Line:       Solid tribute monster.

A BAD Score:            30/40=                         75/100

Cards it functions well with:  It’s a one-man wrecking crew.

Otaku

Stats                : Mobius the Frost Monarch is a Level 6 Water/Aqua Monster.  Being a Level 6 is better than being a Level 7.  Normally, you want Water Monsters to be either Level 4, 6, or 7 with matching stats and effects because you could then use A Legendary Ocean to drop them a Level, tourney them into possibly a broken Level 3/4/6 Monster.  As we will see in the effects, Mobius the Frost Monarch would be hurt by being a Level 5.  As for being Water/Aqua, this still proves moderately useful.  Its Water attribute means that in said A Legendary Ocean you’d get a slight ATK/DEF boost, and there are a few cards that can combo with it.  Since its type is Aqua, Tribe Infecting Virus would have to suicide itself with its own effect to kill it.  Of course, if Mobius the Frost Monarch is maintaining your field presence, two-for-one is worth it.  If there is some kind of swarm deck build around this card, then being an Aqua type becomes an incredible advantage.

Moving on, we see this card has a nice, solid 2400 ATK.  It doesn’t get much better for Level 5/6 Monsters.  We back it up with DEF of 1000.  In the Traditional Format, where Witch of the Black Forest is still legal, then this would only be slightly weak.  For Advanced, it becomes a little more significant: there are quite a few ways to exploit that weak DEF, like Level Limit Area B.  Of course, out of what is played, the Level 5/6 Monsters are defined as much by their effects as by their stats.

Effect(s)            : When you Tribute Summon Mobius the Frost Monarch, you may destroy up to two Spell/Traps on the field.  This is why so many people are overreacting to this card.

*gasp*

Yeah, that’s right, overreacting.  This card is quickly becoming the Vampire Lord of this set.  Why?  In Traditional, this not worth the effort.  You still have Harpie’s Feather Duster alongside your Heavy Storm.  This is easily enough to cripple all but the best of the decks that rely upon permanent Spells or Traps out on the field.  Oh, and let’s not forget full access to a true Chaos Control deck.  Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End doesn’t really care about Level Limit-Area B, and we already knew that.   Same for Yata-Garasu.

Fool! What of Advanced?  What of all the Stall/Burn?

Well, from what I am hearing more and more, even with out Mobius, the Frost Monarch, several decks were keeping pace with Stall/Burn, and possibly surpassing it.  Look at Warriors.  In addition to Black Luster Soldier-Envoy of the Beginning for a Chaos Warrior deck, Warriors also still have Mataza the Zapper, a Level 3 Dark/Warrior that can attack twice.  If the opponent isn’t running Messenger of Peace as well as the other restrictive cards, you can add an Equipment Spell and really make them feel the pain.  Don’t forget, you can still use Black Luster Soldier-Envoy of the Beginning’s remove-from-play effect while it is being blocked from attacking.  So Mataza the Zapper can get some direct hits in.

For just about everyone else, he can be a great side deck, but there are enough other ways of handling Stall/Burn to keep it from having such a huge advantage.

Uses and
Combinations  : Now, remember when you use Mobius, the Frost Monarch, his effect only works when he is Tribute Summoned.  That is very important.  You see, aside from nailing that one face-up Level Limit-Area B or Messenger of Peace, your probably going to hit a something that can be chained to that Tribute Summon.  All the normal hard to hit cards like Waboku and Ring of Destruction with other cards like Ceasefire, Torrential Tribute, Bottomless Trap Hole, etc.  This is why Jinzo is still a nice card to at least Side Deck.

Also, be aware that 2400 ATK was never that big in Traditional, and seems even smaller in Advanced.  No Level 4 that can be easily Summoned or played matches it, but most are a single, readily available Equip Spell away from it.

Ratings

Traditional       : 2.75/5-He’s not the replacement for those lost Mystical Space Typhoons, but he can be useful if you Jinzo wouldn’t work out and/or you could also use a single Tribute Monster on the larger end.

Advanced        : 3.5/5-But that’s including it usually being a decent side deck choice if Stall/Burn is truly dominating you.  It’s good, but it’s not that great.

Limited                        : 4/5-Okay, here it’s really great: solid Tribute, and if they got any Spell/Traps, you can try and nuke them.

Summary
Mobius the Frost Monarch is a Level 6 Water/Aqua Monster with a good ATK and solid effect.  It’s not something for ever deck or even every Side Deck, but it’s a solid choice.
