ExMinion OfDarkness Thursday:
Gravekeeper's Curse

Okay, so there is a worse Gravekeeper than Gravekeeper's Cannonholder.

GK decks are generally not meant to be Burn decks. They're meant for swarm and denial, in my opinion, which makes this card seem out of place.

Even with Necrovalley out, it gets trumped by Zaloog and most all of the "if this gets killed in battle search your Deck for a XXXX type of 1500 ATK or less" monsters. The Gravekeeprer's deck will already be running 3 Spear Soldier, 3 Spy, 2 or 3 Assailant, 1 or 2 Chief...I'd suggest 1 of this at most, for the sole purpose of using recursion on it if your opponent has under 500 left.

2/5
Tranorix Gravekeeper's Curse

Gravekeeper's Curse is probably the least-used of all the Gravekeepers, and I can certainly see the reasoning behind it. With pitiful stats of 800/800, it won't be killing much of anything; though it is searchable via Witch, Sangan, Tomato, and Spy. With Necrovalley he becomes a slightly-but-not-much better 1300 attacker.

The effect is simple. Summon him and your opponent takes 500 damage. Granted, 500 damage certainly isn't terrible; but there are so many better Burn cards (monsters included) out there that it really isn't worth using Gravekeeper’s Curse at all, unless you strongly want to stick to the Gravekeeper theme.

The one nice use is to combine Curse with Cannonholder. Summon Curse for 500, then launch him for 700 for a grand total of 1200 damage. Sure, it's not bad; and yes, it could definitely add up if you use it more than once; but I don't think Gravekeeper's Curse is as worthy of deck space as some other, better Gravekeepers.

Typical tournament deck: 2/5
Gravekeeper deck: 2.5/5
OVERALL RATING: 2.3/5
Otaku

Stats: Gravekeeper’s Curse has some iffy stats.  Like all the true Gravekeeper Monsters, it is a Dark/Spellcaster, meaning solid support.  It is only Level 3, letting it sneak under Gravity Bind and Level Limit-Area B.  Here’s the downside.  It’s ATK and DEF are both a pitiful 800.  Since this card is only to be used for its effect, in the end I guess that’s good, because it means that can be searched for via Witch of the Black Forest, Sangan, Mystic Tomato, and Gravekeeper’s Spy (she’ll be covered in detail eventually).

Effect(s): When summoned in anyway way (I don’t think being flipped by an effect or attack counts), you inflict 500 damage to your opponent.  It’s not much, but it can be useful.

Uses/Combinations: Here’s how: obvious combo is with Gravekeeper’s Cannonholder.  Summon this to do 500, then nuke it to do another 700.  Not enough?  There are two extra ways of getting it back from the Graveyard since it’s a Gravekeeper-Rite of Spirit (tomorrow’s card) and a Gravekeeper’s Chief.  Finally, since it can be searched out by Gravekeeper’s Spy, you can then nuke that too for more damage.  I suppose a general burn deck could consider them too-I mean, a normal Cannon Solider basically gets to hit for 1000 with it.

Ratings

Casual: 2.75/5, 3/5 with bans.  Note, its performance doesn’t really change-it’s the fact that most other Gravekeepers get better.

Tournament: 2.25/5. 2.75/5-Same as above, but in a more cut-throat environment, it becomes even worse.

Limited: 3.5/5-It acts like a 1000 LP burn here.  If you can pull it with Gravekeeper’s Cannonholder and/or Spy it can be really great.

Summary

A bit too specialized, but not worthless.

dawnyoshi The sad part about Gravekeeper's Curse is that at one point, I ran three of these. No, I did not win any tournaments when running these.

Gravekeeper's Curse deals a whopping 500 damage to the opponent's life points. That's 1/16 of their starting life...which doesn't look very good in fraction form compared to the damage Secret Barrel or Poison of the Old Man can do. Poison Mummy is at least a flip effect with some decent defense, whereas Curse here is pretty...weak. You don't want to summon this with Gravekeeper's Spy, you don't want to summon this with Rite of Spirit, and you don't want to summon this with Gravekeeper's Chief...so where's the space to run this guy? Simple answer: there is no space in your Necrovalley deck for a Curse.

Constructed: 1/5- just not worth it. I'd pick Cannonholder over this guy anyday.

Limited- 2/5- In limited, its effect deals 1/8 of the opponent's starting life points in damage...a little better, but not by much. His body's pathetic too. You need some high stat or decent effect, so you can summon your higher level monsters. Tributes are needed in limited, and this guy doesn't provide you with any!

Thursday: Gravekeeper’s Curse

Rated For: Gravekeepers’ Deck

Yet another of the numerous GK-themed cards, this one packs weak stats with a weak effect. It really only belongs in a GK burner (an interesting deck-theme if I’ve ever seen one.) Otherwise, the system will skewer it.

Advantage F/H: Whoop-dee-doo it’s going to unleash 500 points of damage! You can always search it with GK Spy of course, but doing that is akin to finding a Cannon Soldier with your Witch effect and immediately sacrificing it for 500 damage (in other words, a waste of a search.) 500 points of life point gain, coupled with no field or hand presence leads to a         0.5/10.

Best Draw for the Situation: Drawing this card is never a “good” opportunity. It’s like drawing an effectless 1200 attack “beatstick.” I wouldn’t ever want to draw this card in any situation; I’d never want to have it in my deck either. It’s like drawing Ookazi (a common lament.) It does 500 damage reliably, so it can help in a pinch?    0.5/10.

Attributes/Effect: It’s a Gravekeeper but it’ll only be boosted by 1500. That basically means counterless Breaker, Tribe, and nearly every commonly run monster will ram right through it WITH Necrovalley active. It does 500 damage (which should have been 1000-2000 range in my opinion). It’s really just a garbagey card.         1/10.

Dependability: If you absolutely need it to do that extra 500 points of damage, it’s quite dependable. Don’t expect it to stay on the field for long                    0.5/10.

The Bottom Line: Sorry.

A BAD Score:         2.5/40=                                             6/100

Cards it functions with: GK Spy, GK Cannonholder, standard GK support.
