ExMinion OfDarkness Phoenix Wing Wind Blast

Back to Square One in Trap form.

Given that this card is just SO similar to Back to Square One, I'm going to spend this review comparing the two.

This card can't be used the turn you get it, but it can bounce back M/Ts as well. If an opponent set a bluff, then they'll be stuck drawing the useless card again. If an opponent set a Mirror Force...well, you don't have to worry about it for one more turn. Wing Blast can only be used on cards on the opponent's side of the field (not that you'd really want to re-draw anything yourself...) That's something to be careful about -- if an opponent Snatch Steals YOUR monster, and you Wing Blast it, you're going to end up redrawing that monster next turn. Horrible outcome if it's a Tribute or you really need a spell/trap and have a monster-overloaded hand.

I didn't see it in play at all; given the discard, and the fact that people are ancy about even running Lightning Vortex, I understand that. However, it's still a good card for those decks that have the cards to discard (decks that try to abuse Night Assailant and/or Forced Requisition).

Traditional: 2/5 -- discarding...just no. Even though you're setting them back a draw, cards are too precious to come by.

Advanced: Really depends on the deck. I'm going to abstain from scoring this card in Advanced until I see it used.

And now to give a tip of the hat to one of the writers on this site.

I think I summarized how cool Dawnyoshi is in my article from last… Tuesday? Anyway, quoting myself:

"Oh, I can't write enough on how much I like Dawnyoshi. Let me summarize the coolness of the man as such. Imagine seeing a tournament full of losers who have nothing better to do with their time but trade and wonder about their own cookie cutter deck and see how well it performs against other cookie cutter decks. Imagine seeing all of these losers, jackasses, cheaters and unoriginal morons who copy a deck exclusively because it works…

And then a beacon of light shines through the area. You see a man walking through the tournament who is absolutely a site to behold. As Mike Rosenberg/Dawn Yoshi walks through the area to the tune of Aerosmith's "Dude Looks Like a Lady", coming from a stereo system which is no doubt hidden inside his gorgeous flowing hair, his leather moccasins making soft patting noises on the hard floor that carry with them a deafening silence that is heard at the end of a god's speech.

As he plays, he makes every move carefully, capturing all of his opponents save for one in a lock with Tsukuyomi, Time Seal/Phoenix Wing Wind Blast/Solemn Judgment, and Mask of Darkness or just using Tsukuyomi with Magician of Faith to draw his deck in a turn."

Dawnyoshi was running a Tsukuyomi control deck. Basically, throw 2 MoF, 2 Mask of Darkness, and a bunch of really debilitating and good cards together and hope that your card advantage works out to start a Tsukuyomi lock. I myself was surprised – Solemn Judgment and Phoenix Wing Wind Blast, two cards I hadn't thought of, worked very well in administering the lock. Good job, Dawn.

So yeah, that's my long tip of the hat.

So, the card Dawn told me to review. PWWB. Back To Square One with a debilitating side effect, chainability and a broader/less broad target. I think I said about Back To Square One that I'd rather use Raigeki Break because Break hits your own cards when you need it too – specifically, Mirage of Nightmare. Hey, Mirage is banned. Go figure.
No more reason to be able to hit your own cards.

Gasp – PWWB hits all cards. Well, great. I love bouncing a Pot of Greed back to their deck and everything. So it's not going to be hitting Spells unless it is something like Premature Burial or Final Countdown or something with a hefty LP cost, or, like Final Countdown, useless after the first copy. Traps are okay, as hitting a Call of the Haunted or Ring of Destruction, slowing the opponent down by two or three additional turns of cards, is very nice. Monsters have the obvious uses of Square One, but without the speed. This slows down gameplay a lot in that regard.

The discard is a reasonable cost now – 2 Night Assailant and Sinister are all you've got for the format.

I brought up this point on the Tsukuyomi lock (which can be achieved with PWWB, Solemn Judgment, Time Seal and Drop Off as well as Mask of Darkness and Tsukuyomi) in the forums (Visit them, drat you!):

"What dawn doesn't mention is that the Solemn Judgment lock is very risky unless both players are low on life and you have a few defensive traps to go for you besides Solemn. All it takes is one turn of not setting a card or Setting a monster or m/t instead of summoning it/playing it and the lock is sort of stopped. Which is why PWWB is so great in the deck. Running three of one of the 4 capable cards to lock with wouldn't work, but running 2 of 3 of them works well because they compliment each other like that. Time Seal stops the draw phase entirely and baits out m/t removal, PWWB hurts them if they play defensively, and Solemn Judgment hurts them if they play offensively.
So basically, if you don't play carefully enough to not fall into the lock, you end up risking the entire game on what your next card is.
Which won't matter if they've a Time Seal. XD"

Having quoted myself twice in one review, I think that's it. You can get more expert opinion on the card from the man who top 8'd at Shonen Jump with it, Dawn Yoshi.

Have fun.

Limited: Just plain solid. I rarely rate for limited, and then it's just to add to the hyperbole I am wont to use to describe how good certain cards are (or how much they aren't good). In this case, I will. If you get this card and you don't have an Insect Knight, Golem Sentry, or Threatening Roar (actually, cross that. Just Insect Knight.), then you take this. 4.5/5

Tranorix Phoenix Wing Wind Blast

This is a card fairly similar to Back to Square One, but different too, for obvious reasons. First of all, it’s a Trap, which is good and bad. It’s a chainable Trap, however, which is nice. But you have to discard to activate the effect, which is another downside.

But the effect is pretty nice. Return a card (monsters AND S/T) on your opponent’s side of the field to the top of the owner’s Deck. Discard Sinister Serpent and make him draw his monster again next turn (extra fun with Tribute Monsters). Return that Gravity Bind that’s aggravating you so you can attack – of course, you’re likely going to be facing it again somewhere down the line.

It’s a good card, not spectacular though. After all, you’ll rarely be getting rid of the threat for good; you’re just delaying the inevitable. So hey, run it if you feel like it.

Snapper Phoenix Wing Wind Blast

Today’s card is Phoenix Wing Wind Blast, a card I’ve had the pleasure of getting 3 of.

Phoenix Wing Wind Blast is an interesting Trap that is similar to A Feather of the Phoenix. At the cost of discarding a card from your hand, Wind Blast can return a card on the opponent’s side of the field to the top of the owner’s Deck. The effect has its uses; get rid of a known or unknown threat temporarily and give the opponent a dead draw on their next turn, forcing them to re-summon/Set the card. Personally, I prefer Compulsory Evacuation Device, mainly because it doesn’t need a discard. Sure CEDevice can’t return S/Ts, and it only returns the card to the hand, but it’s free darn it! Maybe if I had Sinister Serpent in every Deck I’d have a different opinion… Still, Wind Blast has a good effect; I’d just prefer something else…

Advanced: 3.5/5. If it didn’t need a discard it’d be a 4.X.
Traditional: 2.5/5. Discard=bad.
Overall: 3/5
Art: 3/5. It’s Name That Monster Time! I see Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys (duh).

Dark Paladin Phoenix Wing Wind Blast

Discard 1 Card from your hand. Return one monster on your opponent's field to the top of their deck.

I guarentee this card is underrated. I run one myself in my deck and it does have some potential. It may seem like a good effect with a not so good cost at first look.

A discard can be a big deal, but the effect makes up for it. Use it to return a Phoenix or some other powerful two tribute monsters (DMoC) to your opponent's deck. You could even use it on BLS. That could really hurt assuming your opponent wouldn't have another light and another dark monster to remove to summon BLS next turn.

This card can definately be a surprise to your opponent, and a very unwelcome one at that. In a control deck, this card also has some purposes...Granted, it would be better if the card were destroyed or something, but returning it to the deck could be enough.

Ratings:

Traditional: 2.2/5 Yata still looms here, willingly giving up your hand = not good
Advanced: 3.5/5 A good option, try it out, you may be surprised.
Limited: 3/5 Just for sheer annoyance.

Art: 2.5/5 meh...

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

jinutym03 haha...I guess all my teammates' featured decks are basically covered now ^^

Since we reviewed Evan's deck yesteray, today we will review Jae's deck today ^^

Jae is running a Chaos deck without the use of the cookie-cutter warriors. He utilizes Night Assailant (which has been restricted to 2 and this card is one of the reasons why it's restricted to 2).

Phoenix Wing Wind Blast is a trap that's like a Back to Square One but any card on the field. It seems bad? It seems good? Well I think it seems AMAZING.

In Magic: the Gathering, there is a card called Hinder. It says "counter target spell, either put it on top of the deck or on the bottom." Some Magic players counter a spell JUST to put it on top of someone's deck. Controlling what your opponent draws and locking them down with an useless monster/magic/trap on top of the deck...also amazing.

If you look at Mike's deck (sorry, can't spell your last name >_<) He played Mask of Darkness to get back Phoenix Wing Wind Blast and/or Time Seal to "lock" your opponent. Eventually he'll draw all the answers and win with just tiny monsters but you won't be able to do anything.

The power of controlling what your opponents draw, especially in this game, it's amazing and good players will know what to do with it. Now for the record, I've never playtested this card too much but it's always been one of those "i wanna play/test with it but never had time" cards.

Just like all my CotD reviews, try this card. I can go on and on about how good/bad a card is but until you try, you'll never know...

Ratings
Constructed (in a right deck): 4.5/5
Constructed (in some random deck): 2.5/5
Limited: 5/5 (one of the best cards to draft)
