Welcome to another Burn week! We'll be
looking at 4 burning cards from FET, and one
old burn card that's suprisingly never been
reviewed.
Today's card is a hit-or-miss card with some
lackluster stats and a risky effect.
The good: His Beast-Warrior type lets him
gain trample from Enraged Battle Ox.
The bad: 1200/1200 usually doesn't last on
the field that long...that, and if this is
in ATK mode, they kamikaze the Pyramid
Turtle and bring out Vampire Lord or Ryu
Kokki.
The ugly: Since you don't know if his
effect will do damage to you for sure, you
can't chain Barrel Behind the Door to it.
The best thing you can do is use Second Coin
Toss.
He is a good burn monster for FET, and could
potentially be devastating in Limited play,
where someone might not be able to deal with
that damage. However, there are better
cards that do 1,000 damage per turn that can
be played in a Burn/Stall -- Stealth Bird,
Lava Golem, and Wave-Motion Cannon all come
to mind. (Note of the day: 3x Wave-Motion
Cannon is usually a great play AGAINST a
Burn deck -- the Burn deck typically won't
use Heavy Storm, so it will be incredibly
hard for them to get rid of one, let alone
multiples...and remember, WMC is a
Continuous so just like our friend Abare
Ushioni, you can't chain Barrel Behind the
Door to that either.)

Abare Ushioni
Realizing that I hadn’t picked a week of Card of the
Day since Harpie Week, I felt it was about time for
another of my rentsy Burn Weeks! Flaming Eternity
brought a few new Burn cards, but are they any good?
Well, obviously, that’s what we’re about to find
out.
Abare Ushioni is an interesting little monster. It
only has 1200 ATK and DEF, and it’s Level 4, so
right away there are some flaws. Being EARTH is
nice, and so is being a Beast Warrior, but most of
the advantages for those types mainly help Beatdown,
and this guy’s not really suited for that kind of
deck.
In a Burner, he’s still only questionable. Sure, you
can do 1000 damage to your opponent – but you can do
it to yourself just as easily. And while something
like Second Coin Toss might tilt the odds in your
favor, is it really worth it? I’d also like to point
out that you CAN’T use Barrel Behind the Door on
this effect, which makes it that much less playable.
Does this belong in EARTH Beatdowns and/or Beast
Decks? Not really. He also doesn’t really fit in
many Burners. This is a fun card – it certainly has
potential to help you but it also has potential to
hurt you. A Chance Deck would be your best bet if
you want to play Abare Ushioni.

Abare Ushioni
Welcome to another Burn Week! This week we’ll be
reviewing most of the burn oriented cards of FET.
Our first card this week is Abare Ushioni, a monster
that has a 50% chance of backfiring on you.
Abare has substandard stats; 1200 ATK gives it few
chances to destroy monsters. It’s a Beast-Warrior,
giving it some trampling perks from Enraged Battle
Ox. However due to its ATK, this is a bonus Abare
will rarely be using.
Abare’s effect is based on luck. By flipping a coin
and calling it right, you can inflict 1000 points of
damage to your opponent. But if you call it wrong
though then you lose 1000 points of damage. The
effect has its uses, all of which require that you
call the coin toss correctly 100% of the time,
something that isn’t going to happen. Now if you
could use the effect with Barrel Behind the Door,
Abare wouldn’t be so bad. But since you can’t, Abare
is a weak monster that MAY damage your opponent. All
in all, I’d prefer using a Bowganian, Cannon
Soldier, or Solar Flare Dragon. Sure they don’t do
as much damage in one sitting, but they’re better
monsters and they have more reliable effects. So
just stick with them, ‘mkay?

would fall into the Beast category…

Stats:
Abare Ushioni
is an Earth/Beast-Warrior Level 4 Effect Monster
with ATK/DEF of 1200 each. The good news is
this means that it:
-
Can be easily Normal Summoned
-
Can be searched for and Special Summoned via
Giant Rat
-
Can searched for via Sangan and
Witch of the Black Forest
-
Can slip under Messenger of Peace
-
Has several strong supporting cards for its
Attribute (Earth)
-
Has several strong supporting cards for its
Type (Beast-Warrior)
-
Has an Attribute/Type Combination that has a
lot of Support
The bad news is… it’s puny. 1200 for both ATK
and DEF means that either mode, you’re probably
dead if a successful attack is launched: this is
weaker than the Attribute-based searchers, and
only a few general support Monsters will clock
in below 1200 (mostly Flip Effects). As stated,
it is a commonly seen combination, so there are
ample alternatives to this card based on stats
alone. Good thing this is a Burner Week and
this is an effect based card, huh?
Effect(s):
Once per turn, during your Main Phase you can
flip a coin. If you correctly call it, you
score a cool 1000 points of damage. This is a
solid effect. Unfortunately, it doesn’t end
there: if you call it wrong, you nail yourself
for the 1000 points of damage. Ouch. As a
whole, this is a fairly mediocre effect, and
will not really give an Earth/Beast-Warrior deck
running person much cause to try it. For that
matter, most Burners have better options too.
The random nature is a mixed blessing: it keeps
Barrel Behind the Door from being used
with is (that card requires you know that damage
is being done), so while you can’t use that to
insure you damage the opponent, neither can they
use said card to make sure you hurt yourself.
Uses and Combinations:
Don’t give up yet. There is still a small niche
for this card. Obviously, if you want a
Beast/Beast-Warrior Burner, you more or less
have to use this (along with Man-Thro’ Tro’).
Still, that’s rather paltry. So we need to see
if there is any way to decrease the extent of
the downsides of the effect. I can think of two
ways.
First, play it in a deck that doesn’t mind
occasionally taking damage, like Suicide
Beatdown. My current attempt at this deck
actually follows an Earth theme, and has quite a
few Beasts and Beast-Warriors in it, including
Giant Rat. In such a deck, Abare
Ushioni is a little less puny (Gaia Power
makes it a 1700/800 Level 4), and I won’t
mind my LP dropping slightly below my
opponents. If I use the effect Main Phase 2 and
in conjunction with Megamorph, there is a
decent chance it will either still hurt the
opponent, or may switch the LP scores enough to
either even up the LP scores or drop me behind
just a tad again, thus stopping Megamorph’s
ATK halving effect and hopefully restoring its
ATK doubling effect.
The second option is to add a little Burn to a
Second Coin Toss deck. Such decks uses
several cards with coin flip(s) and then of
course Second Coin Toss to skew the odds
in that player’s favor.
Using either method (or something else),
consider running Pikeru’s Circle of
Enchantment or similar cards to block the
negative aspect of the effect.
Ratings
Traditional:
1.25/5-Defintely not something to run here. The
possibilities I mentioned tend to favor a lot of
Permanent/Continuous Spell/Trap support and a
field with several Monsters in play, which means
they are incredibly vulnerable here both kinds
of mass removal. Even non-CCCC decks will
probably walk all over it.
Advanced:
1.75/5-I really am not seeing Abare Ushioni
as too useful a trick, even for the deck ideas I
threw out there. If someone has a sick combo
for it, maybe it would be useful. My experience
with Burners (usually not on the happy end of
it) is that, even after restrictions, they still
have a good deal of support, and this card just
doesn’t make the cut.
Limited:
2.5/5-Here, the stats are less poor, relatively
speaking, the burn effect will be a hair more
useful.
Summary
I understand the idea, but believe the designers
over-estimated the usefulness of the effect. We
have Stealth Bird for a much safer, more
reliable 1000 points of Burn damage a turn, and
it’s almost as searchable. This even split of
helping and hurting is better reserved for an
otherwise average beatstick or wall. Had
Abare Ushioni been, say, 1600-1900 ATK Level
4, or had a DEF of 1900 or more, I could see it
being worked into a lot more decks. Even
eliminating several “broken” Monsters, it still
doesn’t keep up with the “mediocre” lot. I
guess if you want a Legend of Zelda: Majora’s
Mask, this would be a must: it’s very
reminiscent of the boss of the second temple.

Dark Paladin |
Hello again to all you reading Card of the Day.
Welcome to Burn Week with
5
fresh new cards! Today brings us Abare Ushioni from
Flaming Eternity.
Abare Ushioni
Level 4
Earth/Beast-Warrior
1200-1200
Effect: Toss a coin. If you call it right, inflict
1000 points of damage to your opponent. If you call
it wrong, you take 1000 points of damage. This
effect can only be used once per turn during your
main phase.
Well, let's go over the goods...
Earth = good
Beast-Warrior= trample with Enraged Battle Ox = good
A couple of bad points...
Only has 1200 attack and defense
Effect relies on a coin flip
Well, I personally don't like Coin Flip cards but
this isn't a terrible one.
If
you can keep him on the field for 8 turns and call
the coin right each time (or you have a marked or
rigged coin or something) you can win in 8 turns.
However, this card isn't likely to stay on the field
8 turns.
I do see a place for this card in a stall/burn deck
maxed out on your Level Limit Area B and Gravity
Bind though. Keeping all Level 4 or lower monsters
in defense while the powerhouses can't attack. As
long as you're calling more coin flips right then
wrong, it wouldn't be all that hard to use him. In
this deck, having three out at a time gives you a
better shot at doing more damage to your opponent,
or to yourself.
There are better burn cards that don't rely on a
coin flip effect, but go ahead and give it a try if
you're feeling ambitious.

Coin Flip |
Abare Ushioni (Something like Demon Bull in
Japanese, if I recall correctly) is just a weak
monster. The stats do not deserve discussion. They
will stand up to little. The effect is worth looking
at. On the one hand, if you have a stacked coin,
this is a quick 1000 damage that gets worse and
worse with every Waboku, Swords or Threatening Roar
you throw up in front of it. On the other hand, it's
a chance effect that doesn't even give you something
worthwhile, like Time Wizard. Time Wizard is
searchable and is a low-cost failure when used
incorrectly correctly. It's almost like there's a
card called Timegeki.
Abare Ushioni is fun. I'll say that. It's just not
