Spell Absorption
If only they hadn't banned Elma...
Spell Absorption is a decent card, but not a great
one. This card gives 500 LP every time a Spell is
played, much like Solemn Wishes is +500 a draw and
Soul Absorption is +500 per RFG'd card. I don't see
this getting an insane amount of play -- burn decks
tend to run a lot of Traps and less Spells, so the
one deck that could possibly use this wouldn't gain
as much as it would need to to warrant playing the
card.
However, for those people who still play
Traditional, this could prove to be a very
interesting deck build -- 3 Spell Absorption, 3
Gearfried the Iron Knight, 2 Reinforcement of the
Army, and the Elma...just give yourself infinite
life and let the Duel go on time. Either that, or
throw in a Final Countdown or two.
For those who love the abuse of broken cards in
Traditional, that deck is worth a shot. For those
who hate Traditional but are stuck playing it, it
might be worth making this deck; if it's successful,
you might get everyone else sick enough of
Traditional to switch over.
Traditional: 3.5/5
Advanced: 1.5/5
Limited: 2/5 (you might get this but not enough
other good spells)

Spell Absorption
This is definitely a nice card, likely the reason
Butterfly Dagger – Elma was banned. Sure, it has the
terrible weakness of being a Continuous Spell, but
it also has the great advantage of being a
Continuous Spell. It’s easy to kill it but if you
manage to protect it, it’ll stay around for a while.
The effect is definitely nice. Whenever you activate
a Spell, you gain 500 Life Points. Whenever your
opponent activates a Spell, you gain 500 Life
Points. This adds up, especially considering that
decks usually run more Spells than anything else.
Add in the fact that your opponent’s Spells give you
LP too, and you’ve got quite a nice card.
Run this in a Fire Princess deck and your opponent
will cry. Since they usually have lots of S/T
protection, your opponent probably won’t be able to
get rid of Spell Absorption quite so easily.
In Traditional Format, this card is actually even
better. This on the field + Gearfried + Elma = as
many Life Points as you want. The game might as well
be over if you pull that off – and it’s much easier
to do that than it is to pull off the other
Gearfried/Elma combos, because 2/3 of the cards
aren’t monsters.
Traditional – CCCC: 2/5
Traditional – Fire Princess: 4.5/5
Advanced – CCWC: 3/5
Advanced – Fire Princess: 4/5
OVERALL RATING: 3.4/5

Spell Absorption
Today’s card is Spell Absorption, a Spell (really?!)
that plummeted in playability due to the most recent
ban list.
For each Spell Card that is activated while SA is on
the field, you gain 500 Life Points. So, you
activate Pot of Greed, you get 500 Life Points in
addition to PoG’s effect. If your opponent uses
Lightning Vortex, you at least get 500 Life Points
out of the destruction. It’s a simple effect that
shouldn’t need a paragraph to explain…
Now prior to the April 1st Ban List, SA had one
megaty super use; to bring victory via a time limit
in a Butterfly Dagger - Elma Deck. As I’m sure
you’re all aware, Elma, when comboed with Gearfried
the Iron Knight, created mass amounts of Spell
Counters for monsters like Magical Marionette and
Royal Magical Library, which could single-handedly
spell doom for the opponent. If you were to throw SA
into the mix though, you could not only draw an
infinite number of cards or have an infinitely
strong monster, but you could also have an amount of
Life Points equal to infinity. But because Elma is
gone (in Advanced anyway) SA is no longer a threat,
or a particularly useful card. Sure you could put it
in a Deck and plan to grow strong off of allied and
opposing Spells, but I’m sure you could find
something more useful.
Advanced: 3/5. It can be a useful card, I’d just
look for something better.
Traditional (Elma Deck): 4/5. You should be punished
for NOT using this in an Elma Deck. Just be wary of
S/T destruction.
Overall: 3.5/5.
Art: 1/5. Looks like something you’d see in DBZ…

Spell Absorption
Effect: Each time a spell is activated, this cards
controller increases his/her lifepoints by 500.
For you anime fans, Kaiba used this twice, but it
had a much different effect.
On the TV show, it allowed him to literally take the
effect of the spell used by his opponent. Against
Yugi, he took Magic Formula. Against Joey, he took
Legendary Sword.
However, this card isn't so bad. It's just screaming
to go into a Fire Princess deck. Why you ask? Well
that's simple.
Since most decks are roughly 50% Spells, this card
could be death in the Fire Princess deck. Have this
and Fire Princess on the field and not only do you
GAIN when you play a Spell, but your opponent gets
BURNED.
Play Pot of Greed? Plus 2 cards & 500 lifepoints for
you. Minus 500 for your opponent. Premature Burial
for BLS or Jinzo? A kickbutt monster, 500 lifepoints,
and a 500 burn for your opponent?
I would love to see 3 of these and 3 Fire Princess
on the field at once. What a burn that would be.

Traditional: 2/5
Advanced: 2.8/5
Traditional Fire Princess Burn: 3.4/5
Advanced Fire Princess burn: 3.95/5

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

Meet the sole reason for Dagger of Butterflies –
Elma's bannination.
It offers hefty LP gain. 500 LP for any spell
activated is fun. Very fun. You could gain a lot of
life real fast with this card and a few others. Toon
Table of Contents comes to mind, but that card's
English release is not yet confirmed.
Unfortunately, LP gain is all it has. It could work
very well with Fire Princess and Gather Your Mind or
whatever you choose to use – even Upstart Goblin
would leave you at some advantage over your
opponent, having thinned your deck by one. With no
offensive capabilities to analyze, it is at the
mercy of the playability of LP gain. Which,
unfortunately, is not very high. Even in Agent
decks, which utilize the power of vast differences
in LP, burn is mathematically more effective than LP
gain. Playing Hinotama puts your opponent 500 LP
closer to death as well as gives 500 points of
damage to a Saturn Shoot. Yet playing Red Medicine
only gives 500 points of damage to Saturn Shoot
without doing any extra damage. QED. Bad example,
but regardless… QED.
General:
Traditional: 1.6/5 (LP gain would not be terrible
here. I would take some.)
Advanced: 2/5 (Because, once again, everything is
good in Advanced.)
