Chaos Sorcerer

Today’s card is Chaos Sorcerer (the Prisoner of Azkaban, for those of you who haven’t yet realized these cards are representing the progressive book titles), a card that I’m sure I’ve already reviewed at one point.

Review

Despite the enormous time gap, my opinion really hasn’t changed, despite CED’s being banned. Chaos Sorcerer is a good monster, simply overshadowed by the highly respected Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning. If you want more Chaos Monsters to summon, try this. If you can’t afford BLS-EotB, try this. If you pray before bed every night that BLS-EotB will be on the next ban list, get ready to face this.

ExMinion OfDarkness
Chaos Sorcerer

Okay, we do get something out of Harry Potter week, somehow...

This card's severely underrated. My old Morph (pre-Tsuku) deck ran 2 in addition to the BLS (but then again, this WAS in the Painful Choice era.) Not removing face-downs hurts (having to attack MoF would just suck), and although you can usually remove the bigger threats (the Jinzo, the opposing BLS, the equipped monster, as rare as that is...) that just kills it in today's environment.

2000 DEF is good, however -- Tsuku can't just flip it F/D and kill it like it can with so many other monsters.

Honestly, I'd recommend trying one out in addition to BLS-Envoy -- I'd say it's almost a requirement should Painful ever get unbanned, or BLS ever gets banned.

2/5 Traditional (we already have CED here, kthxbai)
3.5/5 Advanced

Chaos Sorcerer

The poor man's BLS, or perhaps just a rich man's second BLS...or something like that. If you have lots of Lights and Darks in your deck, and you don't think abuse BLS alone is bad enough, then Chaos Sorcerer might be just the card for you. xD

But seriously, it is a pretty decent card. Early on, of course, it may be useless, but by mid-late game it's a good card. The removal effect is very solid, and so is 2300 ATK.

Rating: 3/5.

Watch out for Kycoos xD. Oh wait, Tsukuyomi owns it...good synergy, huh?

Snapper Chaos Sorcerer

Today’s card is Chaos Sorcerer, a monster with few similarities to the prisoner of Azkaban. It’s probably the worst card choice for the week (in likeness to the Harry Potter series anyway), but it seemed to be a better choice than Chopman the Desperate Outlaw. To refresh your mind of what happens in the third edition of Harry Potter, Harry returns to the wizarding world after a nice vacation to learn that his godfather, who recently escaped from a wizard high security prison, is on a campaign to kill a rat who was once a good friend of his, but stopped being so 12 years earlier when the rat betrayed Harry’s parents, faked his own death, and caused Harry’s godfather to be put in prison when he had committed no crime. Of course, Harry doesn’t learn this all at the same time, but you get the picture.

CS is, for all intents and purposes, a near grade A monster. Yet due to unfortunate release issues, CS has always been overshadowed by its bigger chaotic brothers; BLS and CED. Then considering the fact that BLS is a more versatile and stronger version of CS, and you wonder why the higher ups even bothered to create CS.

Nevertheless, they did, and they made him pretty good too. With 2300 ATK, CS can nearly contend with the typical Level 5 and 6 monsters that the opponent may use. But when you throw in the fact that CS can only be Special Summoned, you realize that CS is equally as good as other Level 6s, maybe even a little better.

CS has the all too familiar Chaos summoning method, requiring the removal of a LIGHT a DARK monster in your Graveyard from play to Specials Summon CS. As has been proven time and again by almost everyone to have played the game of YGO in the past year and a half, this isn’t a difficult feat to accomplish.

CS’s true effect allows it to remove a face-up monster on the field from play once every turn, yet to do so it must forfeit its right to attack.
While it can’t remove face-down monsters, the effect is still extremely useful. It allows you to permanently get rid of a monster that has been beating to ever-loving nose gold out of you, and get rid of monsters you fear to attack and/or can’t destroy.

When using the effect, it would of course be wise to start with monsters that threaten CS’s existence, and follow up with wiping the field of “tech”
monsters. As for those pesky face-down monsters that are just slightly outside of CS’s jurisdiction? Light of Intervention those moes. All in all, CS is a very useful monster. Should BLS ever leave us, he may have the chance to be something; something that can be used in 3s. At the current point in time though, everyone wants to use the Warrior.

Advanced: 4.5/5. Competition is the only reason not to use him.
Traditional: 4/5. The 2300 ATK isn’t quite as forgiving here…
Overall: 4.25/5.
Art: 4/5. His hand motions remind me of the days of DBZ. Ah how I reminisce…

Otaku

Stats                : Chaos Sorcerer is a Level 6 Monster… though since he can only be summoned through his effect, this mainly matters for combining with Metamorphosis and getting blocked by Level Limit-Area B and Gravity Bind.  He is a Dark Monster, so he can be Chaos food if need be.  He is also a Spellcaster.  This does give him a little extra support, though not much.  Finally, we have a solid 2300 ATK and 2000 DEF.  This means only the top single tribute Monsters surpass him in ATK, and he can survive a heat from most beatsticks if he is shifted into DEF mode.  All in all, very nice.

Effect(s)            : A toned down Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, he is able to remove opposing Monsters from play… if they are face up, but still at the cost of not attacking.  Obviously not so great against unknown set threats, but hey, we do have Nobleman of Crossout for those.

Uses and

Combinations  : Okay, here is where I explain why this is enough to keep Chaos decks alive if Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning was to be banned.  Just run some Light of Intervention.  Flip effects are toast and the only way to keep a Monster safe from Chaos Sorcerer is to use an effect to flip it face down.  You can also run three of these bad boys.  No, it isn’t as powerful as BLS, but BLS is broken; we don’t want another of him.

Chaos Sorcerer is also probably the easiest way to get Sorcerer of Dark Magic into play now that Magical Scientist is gone.

Ratings

Traditional       : 2/5-Well, maybe one main decked as an emergency back up should your “real” Chaos Monsters somehow get incapacitated.

Advanced        : 4/5-That’s right, a four.  It is a well built, balanced monster, and powerful in a deck built around it.  The only reason it doesn’t see play is because of Broken Luster… I mean Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the End.

Limited            : 4/5-There are some good Dark and Light Monsters in this set, so it’s pretty nasty if you can get it out.

Summary

A great Monster over-shadowed by a Broken one.

Dark Paladin As Harry Potter week progresses, we come to a card that even being a common, an abnormal amount of people don't even know has been released, and I'm not kidding.

Chaos Sorcerer isn't a bad card, it just pales in comparison to the two Envoys and even Dark Magician of Chaos. Chaos Sorcerer allows you to remove 1 face up monster on the field from play, just like BLS. He also only needs 1 Light and 1 Dark monster to be removed fro our Sorcerer to be Special Summoned.

Chaos Sorcerer is also a common, meaning he's quite easily and cheap to obtain unlike DMoC and BLS (Ultra Rares) and CED (Secret Rare, TLM Variant now...) which is also a plus. Yet, he does have a major downside.

Chaos Sorcerer ONLY has 2300 attack points. A 2400 attack point Sorcerer would've been nice as he could've matched Jinzo, Phoenix, and the like but he's vulnerable to them. He can only remove them if they are ONLY on the field first. If a Jinzo or the like comes AFTER your Sorcerer is summoned, you've got a problem.

However, perhaps I'm being overly critical on Chaos Sorcerer. It isn't a BAD card, it just has counterparts that are FAR superior. He is decent, and if BLS and CED were to be banned at the SAME time, you'd probably see Chaos Sorcerer a lot more.

Ratings:

Traditional: 3.0/5 However, you can use BLS AND CED here so yea...

Advanced: 3.5/5 No CED here, so yea...

Art: 2.5/5 Not that intimidating

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

Coin Flip
Chaos Sorcerer. I have reviewed this card a grand total of three times now, and lost every single review. Pretty much, I'm going to give you nothing but the basics.

It's recurring removal with an almost negligible cost. Don't like their Soldier? Kill it. Don't like their Jinzo? Send it to the flip side. Not battling is not a big thing, especially if it's something that you wouldn't be able to kill in battle anyway.

If you don't have Soldier, here's a good alternative. If you have Soldier but often find yourself needing that extra Special Summon or that extra removal, try it out. You may be pleasantly surprised.
