Archfiend's Oath
I know I'm missing something. I only see one combo
with this.
Archfiend's Oath + Convulsion of Nature
Convulsion of Nature has you play with your decks
face-up. Archfiend's Oath basically lets you pay 500
LP to draw an extra card each turn in this case. If
you have a Magic Jammer or something set to protect
the two cards, then you could have mass card
advantage before long. (Note that I DID NOT say
Solemn Judgment -- if you're paying 500 LP a turn
you REALLY don't need to be giving up half your life
for anything.)
This card could possibly help you put more cards in
the graveyard faster if you need lights/darks for
BLS, or if Reversal of Worlds ever comes out...
...or you could call that one card that'd help you
in a given situation so you have two chances at
drawing it that turn.
Traditional: 1/5 (2 continuous cards with HFD/HS/MST/Dusts?
No thanks)
Advanced: 2/5 (HS/MST/Dusts = still not a great
idea.) |
Coin Flip |
Archfiend's Oath has a fair amount of potential. The
first thing you have to realize with this card is
that it is deck thinning. It might not be the most
productive deck thinning, but the chances of it
hitting a Pot of Greed, a Graceful Charity, a
Delinquent Duo or a BLS are much smaller than the
chances of it hitting, say, DDWL or MST, cards that
you might not care about losing. Heck, if it hits
Serpent, Jinzo, or Nephthys, you're happy – they're
in the graveyard, where they'll be easier to take
care of and get out. Same for zombies in any zombie
deck – getting monsters in the grave might deck you
sooner, but you're more likely to dump an early
Vlord into the grave and start making it impossible
for the fellow to come back.
That's assuming you fail to call it correctly. There
are a number of ways to make sure you don't. I
personally like Big Eye for it since I just finished
up a Reversal Quiz build, but some newer players
might see the potential in Convulsion of Nature with
this card – draw two cards a turn at the cost of two
cards. You'll have gotten the advantage equivalent
of 2 Delinquent Duos after 4 turns.
You can always cheat, too – That's an option I am
obliged to mention with chance cards.
In Reversal Quiz decks (using stuff to deplete your
own LP down to 700 or 500, using Reversal Quiz to
switch LP after setting Fuhma Shuriken or Black
Pendant and doing the last amount of damage to get a
OTK) using Big Eye, Big Eye rearranges the top 5 to
offer maximum speed and get you both the cards you
need for Reversal Quiz GG and help with a number of
other things. While I am sure my version could be
faster, the key thing to do is to have fun. I like
Archfiend's Oath. It works well with Big Eye.
Anyway, it really can't be plugged in to any deck.
It's a nice option for Reversal Quiz, so long as
it's not using the uber speed engine used in that
one Mill deck by Johnathon Navarro (I apologize for
any butchering of the name's spelling.)

Archfiend’s Oath
There is one real use for Archfiend’s Oath: in a
deck with Convulsion of Nature. Play that card, then
play this one; then call whatever card you see and
for a mere 500 LP, you get to draw it right away.
More than one copy of Archfiend’s Oath will allow
you to draw more than one card.
Yes, there are weaknesses, such as the fact that
this is a Continuous Spell, and also because of the
small (albeit existent) LP payment required. Add
that to the fact that this is essentially worthless
if you don’t know what your next card is and you
have a card that’s not exactly staple material.
Use it in a Convulsion of Nature Deck, or use it in
a deck that makes ample use of A Feather of the
Phoenix (that’s not a bad idea at all, actually).
Fruits of Kozaky’s Studies and Big Eye can also
work. This can’t be tossed haphazardly into any
deck, but in the right one, it can be effective.

Archfiend's Oath
Once per turn, you can pay 500 Life Points to
declare 1 card name. Pick up the top card from your
Deck and if the card name is the one you declared,
add it to your hand. If not, send the card you
picked up to the Graveyard.
I'll say right now, I generally don't like cards
that require a Life Point cost unless the effect is
incredibly game-breaking. This card does not,
however, fit this category.
Well, one use I can see with this card though is
using Big Eye. Big Eye allows you to see the top 5
cards in your deck when flipped, and place them back
in any order you wish. That would give you 5 turns
of guaranteed correct guesses if you played that.
Or, if you draw it late enough in the duel, where
you have only 10 or so cards left and you're feeling
adventureous (and know your deck card for card) it
could be something just for fun.
Sorry for a short review yesterday and today, but
I'm seeing no real use for either card. I hope I
didn't miss anything game-breaking about either
card, but I'm sure the other guys will pick up
whatever I may have (hopefully not) missed.
Ratings:
Traditional: 2.0/5 I still think it's better than
yesterday if you like risk.
Advanced: 2.5/5
Art: 2.5/5 Still, I'm not impressed artwise.
Only 9 days until Star Wars Episode III

Archfiend's Oath
Today’s card is Archfiend's Oath, a Spell that, like
yesterday’s card, can increase your hand size with a
little planning.
Once every turn you can pay 500 Life Points to
declare a card name. After doing so you pick up the
top card from your Deck and see what card it is. If
it’s the card you declared, it goes to your hand. If
it isn’t, it goes to the Graveyard. Like yesterday’s
card, AO screams situational. How is this so? Well,
unless you’re cheating or you’re using AO is
conjunction with some other cards (which I’ll
mention in a minute), you’re paying 500 Life Points
to guess. If you are by some stroke of luck correct
you get to draw a card.
If you aren’t, then you just lost something that
could be helpful.
So, what works well with AO? Well two cards come to
mind, and they are Convulsion of Nature and Big Eye.
Big Eye will allow you to guess correctly (assuming
you have a good memory) for the next few turns, but
why use it when you could use Convulsion of Nature?
With it you will always be able to see the card on
the top of your Deck, so to guess incorrectly would
make you worthy of a slap.
All in all, AO is an interesting card that may prove
valuable in a Deck revolving around one card, or a
Deck that constantly allows you to foresee the
future.
Advanced: 3/5. Could be useful…
Traditional: 2.5/5. It may be destroyed before you
get much use out of it.
Overall: 2.75/5.
Art: 1/5. It’s Name That Monster Time! I see a
Terrorking Archfiend reading “brail”.
