Magician of Faith
I’m a little ambivalent toward MoF. On the one hand,
she’s obviously not nearly as powerful now that Pot,
Graceful and Duo are all banned. On the other, she
can now fetch Dark Hole, and getting Metamorphosis,
Scapegoat and/or Nobleman of Crossout back is more
important than ever.
She still Metamorphoses into Thousand-Eyes Restrict,
still gets any Spell back; the only problem is that
you can only run one. Is she still worth running?
Almost definitely.
Where does she work best? Decks that have a lot of
Spells, I guess. I’m just going to say she fits best
into Sacred Phoenix Decks because those just happen
to run Apprentice Magician, who works very well with
MoF.

Magician of Faith
*THIS WAS AN UPPER DECK CHANGE TO THE BAN LIST*
We all dreaded seeing Magician of Faith in 2's and
3's agianst us in Trinity Format. The opponent
played their Pot of Greed for the 7th time thanks to
their Tsukuyomi, finally drew the Heavy Storm and
played it, Nobleman'd your other face-down, summoned
BLS, snatch stole your monster, tributed for Jinzo,
and attacked for game. It was utter crap. Whoever
got the best spells first won.
How good is Magician of Faith now?
Good, but not great enough to restrict to 1, in my
opinion. All those "best spells" are gone. We
already lost Graceful and Duo; UDE took Pot from us
as well (how much for a one way ticket to Japan?)
True, we still have Dark Hole and Heavy Storm, but
if your opponent SEES you get those back, they know
exactly well how to prepare. If my opponent has
already used Heavy Storm and sets a monster, I'm
fairly sure I won't be setting any more M/Ts unless
one of them is Ceasefire.
If Pot of Greed hadn't gotten banned, then I could
see the sense in this, as retrieving it so many
times would just be sick. But there's no card that
generates so much of an instant advantage we need to
drop MoF to 1.
Additionally, some players will have their decks be
SO aggressive with attacking monsters that they
don't have the TIME to set MoF as they're summoning
and attacking every turn. I still see the lone MoF
showing up in most decks but it's not nearly as good
as it was with the trinity.
1/5 for Upper Deck
5/5 for the lone MoF.

Coin Flip |
Magician of Faith has arguably lost most of her use.
She's highly dependent on a weak arsenal of Magic
cards in the hand or deck... Due to all of the best
cards having been used already. Dark Hole, Heavy
Storm, Brain Control and Snatch Steal are, arguably,
the best cards of the format to retrieve, though
Scapegoat is higher on the list due to its crucial
role in preventing quick beatdowns.
But with only one Magician of Faith and one Morph,
her role is ENTIRELY Magic recursion. Without the
reliability of multiple Morphs, multiple Magicians,
multiple Scapegoats, and Sinister Serpent, Morph is
deadwood. Without the powerhouse of BLS, chaos
doesn't gain from her... So all we really have from
her is the opportunity to get a Magic, and with Book
of Moon or Tsukuyomi, to get multiple Magics.
But again, the current hot cards are nowhere near as
abusable. Magician of Faith's true strength, then,
comes from her ability to get you one specific card
you need another copy of. In an aggro-heavy
environment, this equates to Heavy Storm, Snatch
Steal, or Dark Hole. Granted, you will want to get
back Scapegoat and Nobleman of Crossout every so
often, and Book of Moon is just awesome, but this
little girl has been weakened with the arsenal of
Magic cards available. I'm sorry, but she's no
longer the brave heroine she once was. She has died
and become a Saint (OCG players, you get the pun).
General: 3.8/5

Magician of Faith screams “CARD ADVANTAGE”, and most
of you should know why due to the horrors of the
last advanced format. Now, she can re-use Dark Hole.
She can still recycle Swords of Revealing Light, and
she’s now able to recycle cards like Confiscation
instead of Delinquent Duo.
She’s slightly lower in power without the trinity to
abuse, but Magician of Faith is still insane.
Recycling Dark Hole…man, that’s so cruel. In
traditional, Change of Heart makes Magician of Faith
look bad. However, odds that they’ll draw it in
their opening six cards are around 12-15%. She still
packs a punch.
In limited, it all depends on what spells you end up
with or draft. If you get something remotely useful,
such as a solid form of monster removal or card draw
(drafting Dark Beginnings 1 sucks anyway), you run
her if she came in a pack as well.

Magician of Faith
has led an interesting “life”. When she first
came out, you’d usually want to run at least to
and many times three copies of her. Why?
Because then, just like now, there were many,
many Spells that were quite good that are
Restricted or Semi-Restricted. Then came
Jinzo and Nobleman of Crossout.
These really hurt flip effects: the classic
strategy was to use a protective Trap to allow
you to get the Flip Effect without losing the
Monster that gave it to you, then make use of
the reclaimed Spell and unless it was Dark
Hole, use Magician of Faith to pay
for Summoned Skull’s Summon. A simple
combo that often culminated in the opponent
losing at least 2500 Life Points. Eventually
though, Flip Effects were come to be seen as too
slow for the game, and largely were.
Magician of Faith use plummeted, waning and
waxing opposite Nobleman of Crossout
use. With Metamorphosis use on the rise,
as well as several potent but
Restricted/Semi-Restricted Spells filling decks,
Magician of Faith came to be in most
decks irregardless of the prominence of
Nobleman of Crossout. After all, now not
only could she get a precious Spell back, but
she could also be flipped back down with Book
of Moon or ‘morphed into
Thousand-Eyes Restrict. Hitting your
opponent with a double Delinquent Duo or
using a double Pot of Greed was
fantastic. Additionally, there were enough
other Monsters being set that Nobleman of
Crossout could scarcely keep up.
Perhaps the biggest help was Change of Heart
being banned. One of the worst things that
could happen to a Magician of Faith was
having your opponent gain control of it, Flip
Summon it and get Change of Heart back
(free temporary Monster Removal/Flip Effect
negation from their perspective) or a better
Spell. When they were done, you got a used of
Magician of Faith if you survived. Not
happy. That is gone now, though you may need to
worry about the occasional Creature Swap.
Ratings
Traditional :
2/5-Much riskier here. Change of Heart
and plenty of true Monster removal.
Advanced :
3.85/5-A great card you’ll be hard pressed to
find a reason to avoid.
Limited :
4/5-Whatever great Spell
you pulled; you essentially got a second copy.
Summary
Simply put, Magician of Faith easily fits
into almost any competitive deck, unless it is
very, very speed oriented (and even then it
becomes a hard call). I’ve said it once, and
I’ll say it again: cards that are easy to run in
any deck eventually accumulate to the point
where all of the sudden I can get 40 of them
spread nicely across Monsters, Spells, and
Traps, allowing me to build a strong “generic”
deck out of them. That was how Beatdown started
in Yu-Gi-Oh, after all. So maybe Magician of
Faith may need banning someday, even though
completely on her own, she’s a waste (you always
need at least one other card to make good use of
her, even if said card is a Spell already in the
Graveyard). Such generic cards only work when
they trade of potency in order to be generic. A
good example would be Spell Reproduction:
it’s a generic Spell in that any deck can use it
to retrieve a spent Spell, but it requires you
discard two other Spells to pay for it. This
means a generic deck could use it, but instead
of ending up with a “better than average deck”
with no real weakness, you end up with something
with neither strengths nor weaknesses.

Dark Paladin |
As
this week of reviewing newly restricted cards
progresses, we come to Magician of Faith, a card
that Dark Hole coming back warranted a restriction,
in my opinion.
Here's a quick note though, in Advanced MoF IS
Limited, but in Traditional, it isn't...keep that in
mind while reading my review.
Anyway, Pot of Greed is gone. Graceful is gone.
Delinquent Duo is gone. Book of Moon, Limiter
Removal, Nobleman of Crossout, and Book of Taiyou
are all restricted now.
It seems that many of our "game-breaking" Spell
cards were restricted, but, so was Magician of
Faith, which I believe to be an excellent move.
However, Magician of Faith is still powerful. Just
because we have fewer Spells to retrieve, doesn't
take away from her power, I feel it strengthens it.
Now, you have to choose, and odds are, you will only
get to choose once, so it has to be good, unless you
are able to use her effect more than once.
Ratings:
Traditional: 4.8/5 Why so high? No banned Spells in
Traditional, and she isn't restricted. She will be
way too powerful here.
Advanced: 4.5/5 Still good, but only one, and fewer
Spells.
Art: 3.5/5 She is awfully nice looking :)
You stay classy, Planet Earth :)
