Royal Decree

This was reviewed so recently that it’s almost ridiculous to review it again now, even if there’s now a new Forbidden/Restricted List.

With Mirror Force and Ring of Destruction both banned, Decree has slightly less to negate; people are compensating by running more Sakuretsu Armors and Bottomless Trap Holes, but the fact is Decree just isn’t as effective as it was a little while ago.

Whether it’s still worth running is up to you, but I personally never really liked the card. It’s definitely a good Side Deck choice, as if you’re going up against a deck with lots of Traps, it’s always a great idea to have Decree handy.

Royal Decree

Only one of this card showed up maindecked in the Shonen Atlanta decks, which somewhat suprises me but given what decks were played I understand it.

In the new format, players are playing additional Trap cards to compensate for the loss of Mirror Force and Ring of Destruction. Three Sakuretsu Armors may end up being the norm. Players who play other defensive options (in the form of Enemy Controllers) can be rewarded by running Decrees and stopping the massive Sakus and Bottomlesses the opponents will be running. Those using Silent Swordsman Lv. 5 and Horus the Black Flame Dragon Lv. 6 are the most likely to run Decrees, as although the monsters are immune to Spells, they're quite vulnerable to Traps. It would suck to get your Horus saku'd when your opponent would have a hand full of otherwise-useless spells that couldn't stop him.

But right now, cookie-cutter players are relying so heavily on these traps to save them that they won't run the Decrees to stop the opponents from doing so.

Royal Decree is one of three trap lineups you can use. Let's make some smarties.

Basically, I look at Traps this way. You can have the standard toolbox of trap cards, which might consist of Magic Cylinder/Royal Decree, Call, Torrential, double Sakuretsu and a Bottomless Trap Hole, a Decree trap lineup, which would be up to three intensely powerful traps (though usually just Call and Torrential) and anywhere from two to three Decree. The best lineup is probably one that utilizes the Trap toolbox, but slims the "unnecessary" cards down and plays two or three Dust Tornado alongside this lineup.

That says something about Decree. Despite the fact that it's easier to get, the card still can't outmatch a solid trap lineup.

With only 8 out of a possible 24 Decrees played in the SJC this past weekend, I'd say that you should get ONE Warrior Structure (not 50, you morons who did the same with the Dragon Structure) and use ONE Decree alongside the normal trap toolbox if you don't like the Dust Tornado route. But Dust Tornado still outclasses this card. You might view it as a 1 for 0 if you chain it, but it's a 1 for 1. Once Decree is on the field, it affects both players equally and thus it is no longer a tool you can use, making it a useless card that places a condition on the field. It's only a 1 for 0 if they choose to waste m/t removal on it later, in which case you then have to deal with all the traps they have ready then.

General: 3.5/5

dawnyoshi Royal Decree is that card that every duelist is constantly afraid of…I guess. Honestly, I’ve been looking at this card for the past six months in the previous format and said, “Psh…so what? I can chain removal to that sucker.”

In fact, since it’s beneficial in this format anyway, most players are running multiple Dust Tornados as powerful forms of spell speed 2 removal and as a method of set specific continuous traps at the end phase of the opponent’s turn. They remove those non-chainable Sakuretsu Armors from the field. You can imagine what it does to decree if a player tries to activate this continuous trap. :/

That’s not to say Royal Decree isn’t powerful. It’s not bad, but it can screw you over if you simply throw it into your deck (which I’ve seen, and it’s a bad decision). Royal Decree isn’t a bad card, but it’s not that good either. It’s pretty average in this current advanced format.

In traditional, this card doesn’t hurt an opponent’s hand, it doesn’t counter hand control, and it’s not used in One Turn Kills. Therefore, it’s bad. Likewise, this is a terrible pick in limited because of the unpredictability of what you may end up with. You’re obviously not going to play this if you draft relatively decent trap cards. It’s a win-more card in limited, so make better use of your picks in a draft.

Dark Paladin
Royal Decree is a card we reviewed just over a month ago, and my thoughts really haven't changed. So, here is my review from then, tweaked a bit.

We come to the Trap form of Jinzo. I expect this card to see a LOT of play, but I could be wrong. It will be a common in the new Warrior Structure deck.

Royal Decree, as stated, is Jinzo in trap cardr form. It's another excellent addition to a deck that is specifically built to negate traps. You could run Jinzo and any number up to 3 of these, in hopes of negating traps the ENTIRE game.

Next, let's look at this card vs. Jinzo. Royal Decree is a continuous trap...which is vulnerable to Breaker, Heavy Storm, and MST like HOLY CRAP! This card may be used by higher end players on accounts of they would know what they're doing.

However, don't expect victory just because you throw this in your deck.
You definately need to construct the deck, at least partially, around it. I mean, this card could help you stall until you get your Jinzo, you may not WANT it to last the entire duel. Royal Decree is a welcome addition to decks who want extra trap stoppage in addition to Jinzo however.

Art: 4.0/5 It's just a giant castle, but I like it.
