Steamroid
Today we review Steamroid, a decent beatstick from
CRV. With 1800 ATK, he’s respectable for a Level 4;
being EARTH and a Machine is nice too, as he fits
into…EARTH and Machine Decks. 1800 DEF means he can
serve as a little wall if need be.
He’s a great attacker but a terrible defender. If
you take Steamroid into battle with another monster,
he basically becomes a Level 4 2300 ATK monster –
but then if your opponent attacks him, he only has
1300 ATK.
He’s useful as a field-clearer. He can take down
essentially any Level 4 or lower monster, but then
can be taken down himself by essentially any Level 4
monster. Use him wisely…maybe with Limiter Removal,
so he gets a boost without worrying about the next
turn.

Steamroid
This card isn't bad, but isn't great enough that
it'll see much play in Machine decks.
This particular Machine's attack fluctuates
depending on the situation -- if it's getting hit,
it's a 1300; if it's hitting something else, it's
2300 -- if it's hitting directly, it's 1800. This
reminds me more of a Goblin Attack Force/Goblin
Elite Attack Force thing, given all the nasty
Trample that can run over him and the risk of
attacking big and getting hit for it later.
The good thing about this card is that it has 1800
DEF -- an overzealous opponent, seeing a face-down,
might try to trample it with Enraged, only to take
100 damage for his efforts, have you shift it into
attack to kill it for 600, and then deal with the
backlash later.
Before I saw the new restrictions (not just the
bans, now) this might have had an excuse for play.
But given the crippling blow to Machine decks, I
doubt they'll be using their single Limiter Removal
on this combo.

Today we review Steamroid. 1800/1800 is nice, and
it's 2300 on an attack. Nice. Then it goes down to
1300 when attacked. Ugh.
It's a beatstick. Not a great one. But there's no
real special part to this guy, besides combining him
with Reverse Trap, and then you're just stupid for
playing it.

Steamroid
Today's card is Steamroid, one of the more useful 'Roid
monsters.
Steamroid is the strongest of the Level 4 or lower
Machine-Type Effect Monsters. With 1800 ATK, it can
splatter almost all Level 4 or lower CC cards with
its CCCC (Cookie Cutter Cowcatcher), giving almost
no competition until the opponent summons a Jinzo,
or a monster of 1300 ATK or more attacks it. And as
you may have picked up on, it's a Machine, giving it
exclusive abilities with Limiter Removal, which not
only makes it stronger, but also makes up for one of
the downsides to its effect.
When Steamroid attacks, it gets a 500 point ATK
boost during the Damage Step, which, assuming it's
gaining no foreign power-ups, would make it a 2300
ATK monster. Likewise, when it is attacked, it loses
500 ATK points during the Damage Step, which in most
cases would bring it down to 1300 ATK.
Now then, there are three different ways to look at
this effect, and the perspective at which you see it
determines whether you think Steamroid is a good
monster.
Perspective 1: "Aw man, that train thingamajig can
have 2300 ATK! That's way better than almost
everything else. I'll put it in my Deck and
conveniently forget the second part of the effect.
It rocks!"
Perspective 2: "I find the prospect of having a 1300
ATK monster quite a waste of my one-track mind's
potential. I additionally shan't use it because it
isn't a LIGHT or DARK monster. It stinks like hobo
feet."
Perspective 3: "Neat! It's a monster that can be a
nice beatstick, but requires protection in order to
stay on the field for large amounts of time.
I'll use it in a Machine Deck, cuz that's where it
will work best!"
So, which perspective do you view it in? If you see
it in the first:
re-think that decision. If it's the second: … And if
you use the third: go you! You think outside the box
yet know a card's limits at the same time!
Filler paragraphs aside, Steamroid is a very useful
monster. While the drop in ATK could potentially
bite you in the rear, it can be worked around with
some defensive maneuvering on your part. And even
then, it isn't that bad; 1300 ATK is nothing to be
ashamed of, and it's not like you're stuck with it
either. In the end though, it wouldn't be wise to
put Steamroid in a Deck just because you feel the
effect is ignorable. Instead, use it in a Deck
because you fell you can abuse the 2300 ATK. To the
max!
Advanced (Machine Deck): 4.5/5. Very useful,
especially when coupled with Limiter Removal.
Traditional (Machine Deck): 4.5/5. It's unlikely it
will stay on the field long enough for the ATK
reduction.
Overall (Machine Deck): 4.5/5.
Art: 2/5. The eyes could have been placed better so
as to increase its cartooniness.

For
a while, I thought I had unintentionally made this
week "Bad Hand Management Week" until I got to today
*sighs* Anyway, as my week of CRV progresses, we
come to Steamroid, one of the many CRV monsters to
have a name ending with "Roid."
Right of the bat, Steamroid boasts a considerably
good 1800 attack (and
defense) for a Level 4 monster. IF that weren't
enough, he instantly becomes a 2300 attacker when he
attack any of your opponents monsters.
That's good!
However, your opponent proceeds to summon Don Zaloog
with he then chooses to attack you with. You then
lose Steamroid and 100 lifepoints. Why? Wait...Steamroid
loses 500 attack points whenever it is the target of
an attack. That drops our friend to 1300 instantly,
which isn't too good.
All in all, this isn't a bad card, but the drawback
almost outweighs the pro.
