Big Evolution Pill

It takes a bit to get it to be worth the investment, but it can even out.
Here's how I view this card re: saving Tributes:

Normally, it takes 3 cards to get a two-tribute monster out onto the field -- the two Tributes, and the monster itself. It takes 3 cards to get one out through this, normally -- the Big Evolution Pill, the tributed monster, and the monster you're going to summon without tribute.

If you get anything past that first 2-trib, you're ahead. If you tributed Black Ptera for Big Evolution Pill's cost, you're ahead as it would have bounced to your hand. If you get one monster out and then your opponent has to waste a Spell/Trap removal card to get rid of Big Evolution Pill, you're ahead.

It sets up well for advantage, but still requires you run a lot of high-level monsters; something I don't like doing in practice unless it's six Monarchs backed up with Treeborn, 2-3 Brain Controls, and a good few field searchers...I just hope we won't run into a rash of n00bs running 10 tribs/2-tribs in their Dinosaur deck and saying "It's okay, I have one copy of Big Evolution Pill in my deck!"

2.5/5 for combo potential.

Big Evolution Pill is an interesting bit of support for Dinosaur decks. It requires you Tribute one Dinosaur-Type monster to activate it. Sadly, even though it’s a Normal Spell, it then remains face-up on the field for three of your opponent’s turns. During that time you can Normal Summon or Set Dinosaur-Type monsters without Tribute. If it survives all three turns and you have Level 7/8 Dinosaurs for each of those turns, you’re sort of four cards ahead: you were able to ignore six total cards worth of Tributes for the price of one Dinosaur and one Spell. Realistically, you’re not going to have three Level 7/8 Dinosaur monsters each turn without building an entire deck around it, and that is pretty crazy. Still, the first turn it gives you a big Dinosaur at the cost of a Spell from hand and Dinosaur from the field. Dinosaurs have a few tricks to make that easier, like Black Ptera and Gilasaurus. Speaking of Black Ptera, Ultimate Offering could be handy as well (two thirds of the Black Ptera OTK combo, the remaining being Cannon Soldier): if you have managed to clear the opponent’s side of the field and then just flood your own side with big old beatsticks. Sometimes brute force works. If you only focus on having a Tribute heavy Dinosaur deck and not just the Level 7/8 ones, then its not so bad or hard to make Big Evolution Pill put your opponent in a situation where s/he will have to make the call: nuke Big Evolution Pill because its likely two to three big beatsticks are on their way, or save the S/T removal for something nastier and hope one’s opponent is counting on lucky draws.

All that being said, I think there is just enough reason (should you already be taking a risk and running Dinosaurs) to make room for a Big Evolution Pill. The other short cuts can make having a few extra Tribute Monsters safe, with Big Evolution Pill being just a nasty surprise. Remember with the score I am giving it, it’s a specialist so its going to look better than it probably is.

Big Evolution Pill

Today’s card is Big Evolution Pill. Taking a look at this card’s cost…Black Ptera is starting to look better and better everyday. You can perform some crazy combos with this card. How about summoning an Ultimate Tyranno? How about using Ultimate Offering + Big Evolution Pill + Black Ptera?

A fellow duelist and reader of my COTD articles told me about the Black Ptera OTK combo and what it requires:

  • Cannon Soldier
  • Black Ptera
  • Ultimate Offering

It order to do this, you’d need a few cards to gain Life Points with since you’d have to launch Black Ptera 16 times before you eat away 8000 Life Points.

Last Word: Dinos have some nice combos. It’s a decent monster-type that needed a big boost in playability. At least they have decent support cards to make them competitive enough. The great thing they have going for them is that they boast enormous ATK power and don’t even require Tributes to do it.

I definitely appreciate the e-mails guys.

Big Evolution Pill

this card is not half bad. It is an inherited minus 2, plus to get any use out of it you must summon a dinosaur from your hand. But the ability to drop 3300, 3000, etc. for three turns is too good to pass up.

3/5 in a dinosaur deck utilizing a LOT of two tribute dinosaurs.

Kinda pointless without those in the deck:)
