Black Stego
This card actually isn't that bad.
A decent attacker to poke your opponent for smaller
damage, knowing that if they try to attack it, it's
going to defend itself and you won't take any damage
from the attack unless they have pierce. I could
really see this being teched into a Ratbox or
something based on that alone.
Searchable, decent effect, and a dino. Not much more
the Dino deck would want.

Black Stego, like Black Ptera last Monday, came out
in Power of the Duelist, so it seemed so odd that it
never got reviewed back then. Granted, the Set is
far from old, it still seems almost odd given how
desperate we’ve been for more Dinosaur support.
Miracle Jurassic Egg, probably the least useful of
the Dinosaur/Dinosaur-support cards from that Set,
was the only one of the six. Its re-release in the
Dinosaur’s Rage Structure Deck (SD-09) brought it to
my attention.
Black Stego may not look like much at a glance. It’s
Level 4, which is good. Level 3 would probably
better as it would then slip under Level Limit-Area
B and Gravity Bind, and as well see that would be a
very good thing indeed for this card. Still, Level 4
is a no-nonsense Normal Summon or Set to get into
play. It’s Earth/Dinosaur: Earth has some solid
support cards and is the most numerous Attribute for
Dinosaurs (Dark, Light, and Wind each have one while
Fire has none and Water has two). Being a Dinosaur
is why it’s being reviewed this week, and gives it
access to the recent Dinosaur-themed Support. It has
a 1200 ATK, which lets it attack under Messenger of
Peace and be a legal target for Giant Rat, Last
Will, and Sangan. It has a sizable 2000 DEF, which
will hold up against most commonly played Level 4 or
less Monsters. Finally, it has a simple but handy
effect: if it’s attacked and it isn’t in DEF mode,
it shifts itself into DEF mode. This turns it into a
small wall that can safely peck at an opponent’s
smaller Monsters or LP.
The overall combination is a nice fall back for
Dinosaur decks and for decks in general. Monster
removal is played as heavily as always, but players
are loathe to target “small” things like Black Stego
over juicier prey like a Don Zaloog or even a
Monarch (just because its effect has already
occurred doesn’t mean one wants the opponent to have
a 2400 ATK beatstick). This is why Submarineroid
ended up a surprise success: it was just a big
enough defender that an opponent usually had to use
some monster removal to kill it because if they
didn’t, the 800 points of damage it would do each
turn would add up rather quickly. Black Stego can’t
attack directly, which means it will be less
effective, but it is a little bigger both in ATK and
DEF, and that should help. It is also a nice magnet
for Smashing Ground (which I don’t see used as much,
but still see). Otherwise, in actual Dinosaur decks
it can be handy to handle the Tribute costs
associated with some cards (and obviously with
Normal Summoning higher Level Monsters). All in all
a solid card, though I can’t say I expect it to help
most decks, neither would it be a horrendous drag in
most of them.

Hello again, and yes, I am also back doing Card of
the Day again!
Looks like we're continuing Dinosuar Structure Week,
so let's check it out! We start the week of with a
monster known as Black Stego.
So, we have one of those 2000 defense monsters that
can change into Defense position when attacked.
Craptacular at best, I'm sorry, I don't really see
any uses for this card. It only has 1200 attack, and
it's Level 4, so it hurts in more than one spot. If
you REALLY need the defender, use it.

Black Stego:
To make a Yu-Gi-Oh card name - Step 1: Find
something well known, and chuck a colour on it.
Another in the long line of card effects I like, but
don't really like. Automatically turning to DEF is a
lovely ability, meaning one can attack and defend at
the same time. Also, 2000 DEF is perfectly adequate
to annoy someone until they draw Cyber Dragon. The
problem is the ATK. With only 1200, you can hardly
do anything worthwhile, so the card ends up being
useless. Possibly with 1400-1500 ATK, but not less.

Black Stego
One of the best monsters released in years. If you
run a rat box this monster defends your LP. If you
run dinosaurs, he allows a player to be aggressive
and defensive at the same time while giving you a
decent top deck, not to mention remove fodder for
Tyranno Infinity.
Today's format, filled with one to many set monsters
(all of which tend to have less than 1000 def.) make
this monster playable. Attack that set dekoichi
without fear of losing LP next turn. Remove the free
tribute fodder from the game. Protect your LP while
you attack that cyber stein player for 1200. Kill
those exiled forces an opponent has summoned to deal
you a 1000 damage. Cyber Dragon and the like may be
an issue but that is why you run defensive traps.

Black Stego
I think this card is great by virtue of its effect.
You can’t destroy in battle very easily with
anything except a Cyber Dragon, Zaborg, Mobius, etc.
Basically you need a 2100 ATK monster or higher to
destroy it in battle.
Last Word: Not much else to say about Black Stego.
Nice effect with a solid defense.
