Change of Heart

We open Valentine's Day with the obvious pick of Change of Heart. Konami had a change of heart a long time ago about allowing this card to be used :(

Would Change of Heart wreck the game if it were allowed back in? I doubt it. Here's what I see if CoH were actually to come back to being limited:

*People actually have to think about running Flips. You wouldn't just be able to throw down that Magician of Faith and assume that YOU would be the one getting a Spell back. (Actually, if they brought CoH back they wouldn't have to limit MoF, just for that reason.)

*Soul Control gets a boost, and more people start splashing Monarchs. The entire reason Soul Exchange works well is because it doesn't care if the jacked monster is face-down. Brain Control isn't limited because it can't take face-downs.

*People start being more careful about running multiple DDAs, as a stolen DDA can take out two monsters. We already know this from Snatch Steal, but the fact there'd be TWO automatic inclusions in every deck that can do that might curb the abuse a bit.

Since it's banned, I can't give it an Advanced rating...but it gets a 3.5/5 in Traditional and a 4.5/5 if they ever bring it back.

dawnyoshi Change of Heart is a pretty self-explanatory banned card. In the hands of someone with an understanding of this game, this card was almost always a solid +1 or greater. The ability to completely wreck flip effects was just devastating. Never expect this card back into the advanced format. As for traditional, you are playing this if your deck isn’t FTK. If you aren’t, then something is very wrong about your deck.

Advanced: banned/5
Traditional: 5/5

Change of Heart Review

Happy Valentines day! So today we are looking at the appropriate choice of Change of Heart. But it’s kinda sad, breakups on valentines day tend to suck.

So needless to say CoH is a very powerful card, it’s banned! The effect is similar to Brain Control, which saw a nice amount of play at the start of this format. The key differences being: No cost, which really isn’t a big deal; and it, can take face-downs. The latter being the main reason why this card is banned. Face-downs usually are either elemental searchers, who have to die in battle, or flip-effects. As we know, even though flip effects are slow, they tend to be so beneficial that we use them anyways.

Change of Heart was in a meta with 2 NoCs. This meant that face-downs took too much of a pounding and couldn’t always get off their effects. The ban of Change of Heart was to stop people from stealing the flips. Taking control and flipping on your turn gave you the benefit, giving you further advantage, usually a direct attack, and tribute fodder, all for one card, all for no cost.

In traditional, you don’t always need to run this card, since flips tend to be very easy to kill, and therefore don’t see much play. In advanced though it would be extremely powerful, but at the same time a way to counter the “luck” that people get from cards like cyber jar and morphing jar. Debate of whether it should come on the banned list rages: especially since it would be even more beneficial to Monarch control decks. Now this may not seem like much, giving Soul Control power, but you also have to look at the fact that this weekend is the prerelease, and Monarchs will be getting Treeborn frog to help them out.

Overall a very powerful card: not for sheer advantage generating, but for how it can be a solid counter. At the same it’s hard to rate, it’s sort of not in advanced format…

Dark Paladin
Short and sweet today on a banned card which semi-appropriately fits the theme of Valentine's Day--Change of Heart. Use the copy you're allowed in Traditional.

Happy Valentine's Day

Change of Heart :

Its Valentines day, and you know what that means - Another day of rejection for me, and a bucket of tears to follow. It also means 6 days to my Birthday , if you care.

Anyway, striding on, today’s card is the ever so evil Change of Heart, I’d like to say ‘Appropriate’ , but the concept of changing your mind , for today especially kind of defeats that.

Anyway, Change of Heart rocks, and im sure you’ll all agree. This was the 1st major magic that was banned (among others ) , which at the time most certainly dealt a devastating blow to duelists on a global scale. ( and yet now we’re allowed 3 brain control, which is as premature burial is to Monster reborn Its crazy, cos pre mature has always been restricted, but still, no one uses them - Weird)

Any who, the point im trying to address is that Change of Heart is good. Stealing their facedown MoF, or BLS was the icing on the cake, back in the day. Definitely a staple for traditional.

Traditional : 5/5 A very solid card, and with no cost.
Advanced : 0/5 - Basically cos they’re not allowed in.
Art : 4/5 - I like it, very twisted.

Change of Heart:
Aw. it has the word 'heart' in its name.

A card so wonderful it was banned. Technically a -1, but use it to tribute off your opponent's monster for Mobius, Jinzo, Cannon Soldier, or swipe an Exiled Force sitting stupidly on the field and you can ignore that little problem. If Soul Release is rather good, this is bloody brilliant since its more versatile. And it is. Shame you can't use it, as it is slightly less broken than other banned cards. It might even cycle back in at some point.

Traditional: 5/5
Advanced: n/a

Share and enjoy,
Ryoga
