Cliff the Trap Remover
Now we're getting to someone who has a more useful
effect ouf of the Dark Scorpion series.
Cliff is a lot better than given credit for. A 1200
monster isn't going to stand up to much in a normal
deck, but as he is a Warrior, he does have some
versatility through RotA, which could get him out
when the opponent has a clear front row and possibly
get rid of a bluff that was set. I see him getting
more use in anti-Burn though, as he's Level 3 and
under 1500 ATK, getting around the major stall
cards. If you can use a spell or two to clear their
monsters, Cliff can make things easier on your other
monsters later.
It's not like getting to use a second Breaker, but
in that case, it's an acceptable addition to the 2
or 3 sided Mobius, the Dust Tornadoes, and the
Breaker, MST, and Heavy Storm you are already
running.

Cliff the Trap Remover
Before reading this you should refresh on
yesterday's card. They tie in together nicely.
Cliff is a fun little guy that's been popping up in
more rentsy Tomato Control builds. The stats (like
all Dark Scorpions) suck, but the effect is the
heart of the card here. When it inflicts life point
damage you get to destroy one S/T on the field. That
translates into a 1 for 0 in your favor.
+1 advantage. Most of the time though it will only
force out defensive
traps, which in itself ain't that bad of a strategy.
He should only be a tech 1, and only in decks with
proper Tomato or Meanae
support.

Now, this may actually be the start of a climb out
of the gutter with Cliff the Trap Remover...who
actually isn't a horrible card. Is he for your main
deck though? Well...in my opinion, he is a decent
side-deck choice, especially for a Warrior deck.
If you manage a direct attack with Cliff (who has
only 1200 attack), you can destroy 1 spell or trap
card on your opponent's side of the field OR send
two cards from their deck to the graveyard.
In theory, if your attack went through, there's no
reason to destroy whatever your opponent had face
down...in theory.

Cliff the Trap Remover
Continuing right on the heels of yesterday is Cliff.
He’s weaker than his older brother Don Zaloog stat
wise, only 1200 compared to 1400 and 1000 compared
to 1500. But he’s searchable. That’s obviously key.
Now like the rest of the Dark Scorpions, Cliff’s
effect revolves around Battle Damage. Not the most
reliable like I said in my Meanae review, but the
key thing is that Cliff’s generation of advantage
relies on the elimination of the opponent’s
resources and is not limited by what cards you are
running.
Of his two effects the most desirable is naturally
the destruction of spells and traps since that would
be giving you a +1. Even though the preneg of
hitting the top 2 cards is nice, the generation of
advantage in advanced format is so key.
In the end Cliff can be a nice tech card in your
standard everyday CC deck. I wouldn’t main him, but
he’s a nice side in against backfield set heavy
decks.

Cliff the Trap Remover
Cliff is the poor-man's Don Zaloog. However, instead
of offering hand destruction he offers Magic/Trap
desruction which could be equally as powerful. The
main reason I do not attempt to run Cliff outside of
Dark Scorpions is the fact that his stats can easily
be ran over and thus, he is killed. As I said,
poor-man's Don Zaloog. Nothing more, nothing less. I
suppose he also fits into LV3 and lower Warrior
Decks as well.

Cliff the Trap Remover
Well, remember how I said Maenae was great in a Dark
Scorpion Deck? How she was so cool 'cause she's got
1800 DEF and whatnot. And then I compared to
Gravekeepers Servent. Well I meant Gravekeepers Spy.
I only realised that after I posted it. So yes,
incase you're wondering, I feel stupid. So stupid I
guess Seppuku is the only way to regain my honor.
Well, it was a fun ride while it lasted.
Cliff sucks. I meanno offense to fans of him, but
I've tested him personally. He sucks. Only once in
about a dozen duels did I actually manage to get off
his effect. I run 3 Smashing and 2 Dust Tornado, and
I can clear a field easy, but still, I almost never
got the effect. Basicly is forces them to use
Sakuretsu when they may normally save it, but
really, that's not the greatest strategy in the
world. Why not run another Deko, Don, or even
Kuriboh over him. His effect just kills a M/T, and
chances are so unlikely that he'll get the effect,
you'll just start to question his worth really.
His stats aren't what I'd call spectacular. 1200 ATK
kills Sangan, Mystic Swordsman LV2, Magician of
Faith... That's about it really. Magical Merchant
dies too, but it really doesn't matter. If you
attack a fd with a 1200 ATKer, and you don't know
that every monster spare Merchant and MoF are gone,
you deserve to hit a facedown GK Spy. Dealing 800 to
you, and giving your opponant thining and field
advantange. You were asking for it so don't whine
when it happens. 1000 DEF stops... nothing that will
be attacking a facedown. Maybe if your opponant
decides to attack with Spirit Reaper... In that
case, I'm pretty sure it's legal to just punch them
right then and there.
He's kinda sorta lightly splashable. Moreso then
Maenae. He's just not very good. In all brutal
honesty, I'd rather run Dark Scorpion Burglars
instead of him. Atleast then I knocking out a Magic
Card that may have meant victory for my opp later.
Cliff does have his uses. You can hit directly and
kill their bluff for instance. But, that requires an
open field spare a set mt or two. Why not run Don
and knock something out of their hand. Unless you
just Nobleman of Crossout'ed their facedown Morphing
Jar after they set 5 MT, chances are small you'll
hit anything but Smashing Ground or MST while you
have no facedown M/T on the field. Really, I'd run
one, a big maybe on two in a Dark Scorpion Deck. He
can be very good with Royal Decree, as you may hit a
MT they might have set and not have to worry. Unless
of course it's Enemy Controller, or Scapegoats, or
Book of Moon. Honestly though, he's not very good
inside his own deck type, let alone outside it.
There are WAY too many things you could run over
him. Heck, I'd run Zombyra for a Dark Warrior
instead of him.
Traditional Dark Scorpion Deck: 1/5 (He sa-ucks)
Advanced Dark Scorpion Deck: 1.5/6 (He's not the
worst, but he's far far far from the best)

Cliff the Trap Remover
Ahh Cliff. This card has a lot going for it. Spell
and trap removal is always welcome, and the add on
effect is also sweet.
Pretty weak stats, but this baby is meant for lp
attacks so we can look past that.
Very Searchable, and a definite spot in a DS deck.
Traditional DS : 4/5 Stopped by power cards, but
still awesome.
Advanced DS : 5/5 Very nice here , if he lasts long
enough.
Art ; 3/5 Very Geek Chic….

Cliff the Trap Remover:
The Dark Scorpion so sneaky, he doesn't even admit
to being one.
This is really the only thing you'd want to get with
yesterday's COTD. Yet again, Battle Damage must be
done to reap the benefits. Unlike Meanae, he will
only do this through attacking, and 1300 isn't going
to manage that often. Mystic Tomato can kill the
thing for frack's sake.
Oh, his effect. I should mention that. He can kill
S/T's, which is good. He can mill, which isn't.
Sadly, the S/T's you will generally want to kill
would kill him before he kills them.
However, he is Lv. 3. He destroys Spell/Trap cards.
What deck stops things above Lv. 3 with Spell/Trap
cards? Burn! This is a different side deck against
burn. If you manage to attack directly with this,
you can get rid of that Messenger, Gravity Bind, or
Area B sitting in your way. Nice, ain't it.
So, I'd only really recomend this in the side deck.
Against the rest of the world, you aren't going to
be triggering very often.
Traditional: 2/5
Advanced: 2.5/5
Against Burn: 3.5/5

Stats :
Cliff the Trap Remover, although not
mentioned in his title, is a member of the
Dark Scorpions and all pertinent cards just
reference him by his card name. He is a Level 3
Dark Warrior. Yesterday I perhaps exaggerated a
bit with Menae, because Cliff’s
opening stats are roughly tied with hers: it is
hard to decide what, if any of the lowest four
Levels are the best since you’d think stats
would very in accordance with them in a little
bit more predictable a way… and if you keep
looking, you find weird cards that punish/reward
the levels. In this case, most of you are
probably already familiar with Level
Limit-Area B and Gravity Bind. Some
may not recall punishing traps like Infinite
Dismissal which do punish the lower levels.
Of course, being Dark and being a Warrior is
great.
Cliff’s
ATK is 1200, which isn’t great, but isn’t
horrid: he slips under Messenger of Peace,
can be searched for by Sangan, and both
searched and summoned via Mystic Tomato
and Last Will. The DEF of 1000 isn’t too
great, but at least it blocks Sangan and
weaker Monsters.
Effect(s) :
Cliff the Trap Remover is just
that. When he does battle damage, he gets to
choose one of two effects. The first is the
destruction of any Spell/Trap in play, something
that has become more useful since his release,
or he can discard the top two cards from your
opponent’s deck, which will kill almost any
kinda trap (as in a clever strategy) they can
set up with them.
Uses and
Combinations :
As usual, here is where all the little bits of
Cliff prove useful. Cliff slips
under the three major attack blocking stall
cards (Level Limit-Area B, Messenger
of Peace, and Gravity Bind), which
means he just needs to do damage to then
destroy said card. Even outside of a
Dark Scorpion deck, he has his uses: any
Warrior focused deck can easily search him out,
and you can even minimize the cost of summoning
him by getting him out with Marauding Captain.
Yes, both are small, but this way you truly do
gain a lot from him: Cliff attacks
first. If any Spell or Traps in play are a
problem (or Set), nuke them. Your opponent is
then forced to burn the card on Cliff
(one way or the other) the Trap Remover…
or watch it die anyway. Of course, most of us
would rather summon two copies of Marauding
Captain for a lock, but it’s still a nice
option. Many combo oriented decks that lead off
with Cannon Soldier and Last Will
might want to consider a copy of Cliff
just in case (specifically, just in case they
have a spare Last Will).
Ratings
Traditional :
1/5-It’s called Harpies Feather Duster.
Use that instead.
Advanced :
3.5/5-Slightly misleading as this is for decks
that can search and summon him easily. So
Warrior Toolbox, Dark Scorpions, um… and
a fairly random assortment of decks that use
Last Will and Cannon Soldier? I
guess those that have Mystic Tomato might
consider him as well. On the unlikely chance
that you have enough slots to include this with
Dark Scorpion – Menae the Thorn, I
suppose to could and them to a wider variety of
decks.
Limited :
3/5-His low attack is still low, but not as low
in this format. Now, this is for Magician’s
Force. Add half a point for Dark Revelation
Volume 1, as there is Dark Scorpion
support in that set.
Summary
Cliff the Trap Remover
is a solid card that might be a good idea
(perhaps along with Dark Scorpion – Menae the
Thorn) for decks that find they are
constantly getting held up by Level
Limit-Area B, Gravity Bind, and
Messenger of Peace. Perhaps even if
Sakurestu Armor or Bottomless Trap Hole
is problematic, Cliff could be useful.
Then again, in the latter situation Nobleman
of Elimination might be better. So Cliff
has his uses; add him to that long list of
“really should consider” cards.
