ExMinion OfDarkness
Exodd, Master of the Guard

Hello all! Welcome to our short week -- most of the CotD team is busy preparing for or traveling to the US National Tournament, leaving the rest of us for a few more days of cards here.

I'm not going to lie and say Exodd is going to be the next gamebreaking card. It's not. I WILL say that if you combine this with a stall deck that packs enough spell/trap negation (specifically for those evil Crossouts) it can win a few games.

Exodd is one of those cards you can only Special Summon a certain way, so there's no bringing it back, sadly. You tribute any Sphinx (Guardian Sphinx was okay on his own, so he's ideal for this) to bring him out, and you have a 4,000 DEF wall. Additionally, you get your 1000 damage to the opponent for using those lovable little earth flip-up/flip-downs. If your opponent can't find a way to break through the defenses, they'll be whittled away quickly.

Now being realistic...a 0 ATK/4000 DEF monster means either (A) we know exactly what Smashing Ground is going to hit, or (B) Enemy Controller becomes a 1 for 1+ against you. Given that people are tending to play a Mystic Swordsman Lv. 2 sometimes in addition to the 2 Nobleman of Crossouts, it'll be hard to keep face-downs alive for very long.

It's an okay theme for people who want to try it, but don't expect it to take a Regionals anytime soon.

Well, the first two days this week we were on Summer vacation, but for the rest of the week, we're reviewing cards from the new Invisible Fortress Structure Deck, starting with the new Exodia type nomi-monster.

Exxod, Master of the Guard
Earth/Rock
Level 8
0 atk. 4000 def.

Well, even though this guy is Level 8, he only requires ONE tribute.
That in a word, is sweetness. Also, the monster must have "Sphinx" in its name, but that isn't a problem, especially given the new deck.

Now, at first, Exxod looks simply like a massive defender. However, while it's face up on the field, each time an Earth monster is flip summoned, your opponent takes 1000 points of damage. Now, I'm not sure if this is both players, but it would make more sense if it were only your Earth monsters.

A great combo for Exxod is to use him in lieu with Great Spirit who allows you to switch an Earth monsters attack and defense for a turn giving Exxod a chance for some massive damage. I don't usually like Nomi monsters, but this one isn't that bad.

Ratings:

3.5/5 in the correct deck
1/5 elsewhere

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

Hi readers, RJ back for a CoTD! I hope you readers are doing well and such, lets get to the review! =).

Exxod, Master of the Guard
Attrib: Earth
Type: Rock/Effect
Level:8
Atk: 0
Def: 4000
This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card cannot be Special Summoned except by Tributing 1 monster on your side of the field that includes "sphinx" in its card name. While this card is face-up on the field, each time an EARTH monster is Flip Summoned, inflict 1000 points of damage to your opponent's Life Points.

Exxod, Master of the Guard is...well I'm not exactly sure. The Special Summon cost isn't that bad, it only requires you to tribute a monster card with "Sphinx" in its name, lets take a look at the playable "Sphinx" cards.

"Criosphinx"
"Guardian Sphinx"
"Hieracosphinx"

All three cards are Tribute monsters, which makes getting Exxod on the field a bit more challenging. So for this kind of summoning requirement, lets hope it has a nice effect to boot.

Oops, it doesn't. Flip summoning earth monsters? What the heck?!! Admittedly, we do have a few good EARTH flips, such as "Morphing Jar", "Man-Eater Bug", "Hane-Hane", and "Mysterious Guard" are all solid cards, but it really doesn't seem worth it for a monster such as this, if it doesn't get destroyed by "Smashing Ground", it'll get kill by a monster and "Enemy Controller".

I can't honestly see how this would be a fun deck, even in casual play.

Exxod Master of the Guard

Welcome to the delayed Invincible fortress week. Sorry for us all missing out on the last couple of days, but there were some problems apparently.

Anyway, Exxod has been referred to as the ‘latest incarnation of Exodia’ by Upper deck, and although in appearance he does share SOME similarities, in terms of effect he is completely unrelated, still that could be seen as more of a blessing than a curse.

Rock decks have a lot going for the, defense, power and re - usable effects, in terms of flip - flop control.

Exxod is a nomi monster, meaning that he can only be brought to the field by sending the specific card stated in his effect text to the grave . This has put a great hindering on many otherwise awesome monsters in the past, but its almost the complete opposite here. Exxod is easier to summon than most Nomi’s, but he will never be awesome.

Boasting a huge 4000 defence could be seen in the past as a great wall, something to be feared, something to struggle against, but not anymore. Smashing ground in particular searches out high defences like these and obliterates them without a second thought. Exxod’s damage effect is pretty sub par as well, though easy to use in the correct rock deck, putting that extra burn on the opponent after you’ve flipped your Medusa worm or the like, but still nothing that is really worth getting excited over.

Exxod can be summoned by essentially removing any monster with ‘sphinx’ in its name from your field. Currently, this produces 6 contestants, 3 of which are the abysmal Sphinx’s from the movie, and the others being Guardian Sphinx, his protector and the 1200 attack , pretty evil Criosphinx. Overall, not a great pool to pull from, especially considering that all of the above mentioned are level 5+

So, to summarise, Exxod is pretty much an unspectacular monster, without a lot going for him, especially considering that I’d rather have the 3 monsters on the field in an evil little combo that 2 of them and Exxod.
