...the release date of the 599 US DOLLARS 599 US DOLLARS 599 US DOLLARS 599 US DOLLARS 599...ahem, I mean PS3:
Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch

Thestalos has been pwning it up lately, no?

The fiery Monarch adds hand control to the Monarchy lineup of monster and spell/trap destruction. I love this as using all three Monarchs makes your opponent unable to effectively prepare against all of them; The My Body as a Shield that would destroy Zaborg doesn't do anything against Mobius or Thestalos; the Goldd that hurts Thestalos doesn't do anything against the other two, and the Bottomless that cripples Mobius only forces a 2 for 2 trade against the other two Monarchs.

It's pretty standard now -- a 2400 ATK that pays you back the investment of your Tribute by getting rid of an opponent's card.

Try 2 of each Moanrch and the support for it; you'll love it.

Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch

his popularity has sky rocketed and with good reason. Any monster capable of paying for itself upon summon is something to good to pass up. Even better that it deals 100 damage to your opponent for the level of the monster if you pick a monster. (Talk about salt in an open wound:P)

Of course hitting a Goldd or Treeborn Frog will ruin your day, overall this monster is a super special awesome one!

I've seen games won due to the burn effect, I've seen games won due to the accumulative discard, I've seen games lost due to hitting Goldd, and I've seen this monarch become a dead draw against reckless opponents who establish field control and ignore their hand (which in this case is not such a bad thing). Great stats, cool effect, we must welcome the new chaos...

4.6/5

one of the best monsters to date, but he is not worth running at three, I don't care what the current Shonen Jump champs say.

-How I loathe confiscation and Don Zaloog on turn 1:)

I wasn’t going to do a CotD for today, but after reading what some of my peers have said on Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch, I had to.  Its one thing to disagree with a score, but that’s not what this is about: most of the CotD crew got that right.  An almost throw away comment on it (and the Monarch Monsters in general) has prompted me to submit a CotD, albeit it a late one, just so that anyone looking this card up in the future will see my view to balance out what I disagreed with.  Oh, and I am not knocking any of my fellow staffers: I just strongly disagree with one of their observations is all (I won’t even name who, though it should be obvious after reading this).  First, let me do my duty and review the actual card.

Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch is a Level 6/Fire/Pyro/Effect/2400/1000.  Thanks to the power and popularity of the Monarch Monsters as a whole, 2400 ATK is a solid score for a Level 6 Monster: any lower and the other Monarch Monsters would be able to safely run over it, and any higher and we threaten game balance.  Thestalos will be a solid beatstick once it is in play.  It does have a low DEF of just 1000, so position shifting cards tend to be very effective against it.

Thestalos may be a Fire Attribute Monster, but it doesn’t have any effects dependant upon Fire or Fire support.  Likewise, it is a Pyro Monster, but again it can be added to any deck and still function perfectly well.  So that leaves us with the effect, which is what barely ties it into the theme you’d think it would Support (Fire/Pyro).  Instead, this Monster is a little bit of Hand Disruption with a slight chance of doing some burn damage (that will rarely be significant).  Due to some of the better Burn cards having effects pertaining to Fire or Pyro Monsters, this card gives a better imitation of Attribute/Type based theme support.  The best example would be Solar Flare Dragon, whose effect does 500 burn damage during your End Phase and keeps it from being attacked while another Pyro Monster is in play.  Also, Burn decks gain a benefit from Hand Disruption for the obvious reason that they tend to focus on stalling and depriving an opponent of a hand will make fighting back hard.

None of the Monarch Monsters are real Attribute/Type “theme Support”.  In fact, they tend to just reinforce the generic, universally appealing themes of hand and field control.  Still, if I look at what is healthy for the game (in my opinion), then Thestalos is actually the best of the Monarch Monsters: at least he does a little burn damage (and it does make sense to specialize burn with one or two Attributes and/or Types) and it is a little harder to capitalize on Hand Disruption and killing two Spell/Trap cards or a Monster.  If you’re wondering, Granmarg the Rock Monarch fails the other way: he’s the one Monarch that is a bit weak.  And he doesn’t really fit his theme.  Granted, if the rest of the game were better balanced, he’d still border on being too potent… but that is best left to an article, not a CotD.

Thestalos

Suddenly third best isn't so bad.

The eternal debate of the relative power of the Monarchs has shifted slightly more in favour of this firelord and his hand shooting powers. However, so long as people mostly play lots of monsters, Zaborg shall be the second best monarch.

Your choice, though, should depend on the type of deck you are using. A control deck leans more towards Thestalos and a aggro to Zaborg. Decide where you sit, and collect the approriate element!

Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch

Basic Summary: Behold the over achiever of the four Monarchs since three of them are just plain " Thunder, Frost, and Rock " but Thestalos needed to be Fire"storm" not just Fire Monarch.... now if you didn't figure it out already I was being really sarcastic joke :D. Now all the Monarch are really decent playable cards which aren't  overpowered and of all cards released they're all balanced but not too broken a perfect blend in my opinion. Now this card has seen a lot of play lately with Chaos gone and even bumped Zaborg or Mobius out of some Monarch decks. Now I still prefer Zaborg/Mobius over Thestalos since I much rather have field control over hand control and someone siding into DW willn't ruin my happy day like Thestalos can, Since DW just laughs at Thestalos and with a really big new one being released in the OCG ( Rain Demon of Dark World just wonder over to the YGO Japanese section on the Pojo.biz Forums )  and soon here that strictly needs be be discarded through opponent effect I could see this losing play.

Conclusion: Now Monarchs or just like desserts most people have their own favourites and not soo favourites it really depends on you I'm not going to tell you which is the best since they're all good.

Traditional Format > 2/5: Could be funny to discard CeD before they can get a Light/Dark in the graveyard

Advance Format > 5/5: ( Monarch deck )

Artwork > 3/5: Even Mobius/Zaborg look cooler then Thestalos.

Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch

Thestalos is everyone’s favorite Monarch…next to Zaborg. He has become very popular lately in Monarch Control decks as a way to crush your opponent’s resources without them being able to do that much about the situation. He’s a like a Don Zaloog effect that almost can’t be stopped.

He’s of the Fire Attribute and a Pyro-type which means he can fit in some Aggro Fire decks that need all the extra Burn damage they can get from his second effect.

The major weakness to all the Monarchs is that they MUST be Tributed to get their effects. Monarchs are only really effective unless they are Tribute summoned. Otherwise…you’ll have a 2400 ATK/1000 DEF vanilla monster in a format flooded with Enemy Controller and Hyper-Aggressive Decks that thrive on low DEF monsters. Yea…not so good.

The basis of Aggro decks in this format is to either punish the opponent for summoning a Monarch or prevent them from doing so. This format has shaped up to be pretty balanced and it consistently proves that nearly anything can be played when built right.

Last Word: Thestalos is good. No one plays Goldd too much yet, not even in Side-Decks. Take advantage of it in your metagame while you can before people start reading this review. The metagame is always changing and you never know when your Regional-level players have all switched to siding Goldds or even Main-Decking them.
