Misfortune

Speaking of Burn decks...

I could see a random copy of this in a burn deck. There are still more consistent cards that can deal damage in large chunks (Secret Barrel, Ceasefire, Stealth Bird, Lava Golem...) but if you are using Golems, this could be a nice 1500 for you to use after you give your opponent the Golem. You wouldn't be attacking anyway, and that burn adds up very quickly.

However, I just think this card isn't worth the extra few hundred damage it squeaks out over Poison of the Old Man or the good chainable burn traps. I'd rather have consistency over raw power, whether it comes from attacking or burning.

2/5 in the burn deck, 1/5 all else

Misfortune is an interesting burn card.  I am now glad I disagreed with yesterday’s CotD (Power Capsule) that I felt the need to write about it. Thus since that CotD will go up late, I figured I should do today’s so I can include a quick word on checking out what I have to say on Power Capsule now that my CotD for it should be up.

Anyway, back to Misfortune.  This is a variable burn card.  It inflicts damage equal to half the original ATK of the face-up Monster you select on your opponent’s side of the field.  The cost?  Your monsters cannot attack this turn.  Also, it can be disrupted by something happening to the face-up Monster being referenced, in which case you don’t do any damage but still can’t attack.  The good news, look at the wording: your Monsters can’t attack that turn.  What does that mean?  Well, you still have a Battle Phase, which means a Monster immune to your own Spells (hello Horus the Black Flame Dragon LV 5) can still attack (and interestingly enough, the card apparently can select a Monster like Horus LV5 since it’s not actually doing anything to it).  Also, Misfortune is a natural for a burn deck which probably won’t bother attacking anyway.  Of course, the actual amount of burn damage one will get based on what your opponent runs will vary, probably a good 800 to upwards of 1200, based on most decks.  In your classic Lava Golem deck, you should be burning for a good 1500.  I can even see including the appropriate cards to then get Lava Golem back just to sack it with something like Catapult Turtle or Ectoplasmer.  Indeed, there are many opportunities, some better than others, to mess with the opponent via control shifting cards and MisfortuneCreature Swap combined with Susa Soldier, perhaps?  Ultimately, though, I think most burn and Horus decks should be main decking this, and especially Lava Golem.  Now, the real question is, since this Spell appears to place an effect on your Monsters that keeps them from attacking (hence the ruling on Horus LV5), then I believe it would be legal to play multiple copies of it in a turn (unlike, say, Soul Exchange which specifically “spends” your Battle Phase).  For that matter, this is a nice side deck card for many, especially if the opponent appears to be running a Cyber Stein or Chimeratech Over Dragon based deck: the former would likely yield 2000 burn damage to someone who just spent 5000 LP, and the latter I believe would use the attack determined when it is summoned and thus if you did survive, be game ending then and there.  Of course, I could be wrong on what constitutes “original ATK” here.

Ratings

Traditional: 1/5 – Monsters die so quickly here, I just think it’d be a dead draw to often as a result.

Advanced: 3.25/5 – That’s a general score factoring its value in side decks as well as specific main decks, which means it’s pretty solid.

Misfortune:
A burn card. One wonders why Konami make these sorts of things when they've restricted most of the parts of the burn deck.

Misfortune's disadvantage is fairly irrelevant to burn, as many builds don't attack very often and if your opponent has a 3000 ATK monster (i.e. Lava Golem), this can do a nice amount of damage for a single card. However, this is rather situational, and burn isn't particularly good anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about this card.

Misfortune ;

I like this, a pretty great burn card if you ask me.

Essentially, burn stalls and that means they don’t attack, which renders this cards secondary ability completely redundant. With that in mind, considering it can deal 1050 from a Cyber Dragon , that’s nothing to scoff at, as well as considering the obscene amount of damage it could do when combined with the burn trinity and you’re laughing.

Sorry for the short review here guys, but there’s not much else to say. Play it on something big and you’ll hit them hard, play it on something little and you wont.

Advanced ; 3/5

MPS ; 3/5 I like this quite a bit, although burns not my thing.

Misfortune

Basic Summary: Ok when I look at this card I do see some potential good, Now most likely the best scenario is a Burn/Stall deck running 1 or more Lava Golem. Just drop down a Golem destroying two of there cards then play Misfortune then inflicy 1500 lp damage then later on another 1000 from Golem pretty neat. Now other then that I see nothing more then another really situational spell card from the new sets but at least this card has more uses then yesterdays.

Conclusion: Lava Golem new best friend just test out and see how it works :D

Traditional Format > 1/5: Why bother in my opinion

Advance Format > 2/5: Misfortune + Lava Golem

Artwork > 1/5: Weird

SELECT 1 FACE-UP MONSTER ON YOUR OPPONENT'S SIDE OF THE FIELD TO ACTIVATE THIS CARD. INFLICT DAMAGE TO YOUR OPPONENT'S LIFE POINTS EQUAL TO HALF THE ORIGIONAL ATK OF THE SELECTED MONSTER. YOUR MONSTERS CANNOT ATTACK THIS TURN.

My only question would be why?

Secret Barrel, Ring of Destruction, Magic Cylinder, etc all do more damage than this card and accomplish something else. Either they draw out s/t removal, kill a monster, or stop an attack. Not many people run big monsters. No more 3000 BEWD hitting the field to often anymore. And even if they did, your still going to have to wait for your turn to use it. IT IS NOT A QUICK PLAY LIKE Poison of the Old Man. To top it all off, they make this card "balanced" by forcing you to give up your battle phase.

1/5

One of the worst spell cards ever made.
