Security Orb is one of those Trap Cards that really strikes me as being good, or at least playable, if nothing else. It has two effects, and in today's metagame, I'd say this is maindeck playable and definately a side-deck staple.

First, Security Orb can change the battle position of an attacking monster, which is a semi decent effect. If that were all it did, I could shrug over it. However, if this card is destroyed while face-down, (except by a monster) as long as the card is controlled by your opponent, you get to destroy a monster on the Field.

So, it adds a little balance that you can't use the second effect if a monster (like a Monarch) destroys it, but still...MST, Heavy Storm, Twister, just to name a few...having a face down card destroyed isn't very difficult, even by a Magic or Trap card.

Moving on with another card, we look at an interesting trap from GLAS, Security Orb.

I suppose you could call this multi-purpose. If the opponent’s monster declares an attack, this is an enemy controller. If this card gets destroyed, while face-down, by a Spell or Trap, than you get to destroy a monster.

Let’s take a look at the first effect. This is an unchainable trap card. Very bad. Compared to Enemy Controller, this card can’t stop Jinzo and can’t be chained to a Breaker, a Mobius, a Raiza, or anything of the monster sort. And even if you get the effect off, it is still a -1, and you better have a way to deal with that monster before it can continue next turn. Enemy Controller can be chained to all the above and can, temporarily, stop a Jinzo.

The second effect is also unchainable. It HAS to be destroyed by a Spell or Trap as well. So, again, Breaker and Mobius get off the hook. And, furthermore, there is a strong possibility that the opponent won’t have a monster on the field. If I’m preparing for a big attack, and I have a heavy storm or MST, I am going to use that first, before I start summoning monsters.

Overall, whether you are looking for monster destruction or an attack blocker, there are simply better cards out there.

General Zorpa Security Orb

An incredibly solid world premiere card. you change the battle position of an attacking monster by playing it, and if it is destroyed by a spell or trap card while face down, you destroy a monster on the field. You can blast even your own monsters with this effect, so a useless Sangan, Card Trooper or Light and Darkness Dragon just got their effects activated. Not a great card, but good enough that I was happy when I pulled mine.

Man.

So often there are cards that seem so rare and good but are actually faulty. They have good effects, but very low utility. In other cases, the effect is mediocre but utility is high; it just is not powerful enough. This card is more of the former, but some aspects of the latter also exist.

It was a good try, but ended up as a total failure. This Ultra Rare is a ridiculous fusion of Book of Moon/Enemy Controller and Dark Coffin. How come Cunning of the Six Samurai got that “either player’s Graveyard” tweak and this one never got anything similar?

First, second effect could have been better. With Breaker the Magical Warrior (and potentially two Apprentice Magicians) roaming around the board ubiquitously, why not add the effect of a monster to the trigger? It would not make the card “broken.” Second, if the only monster(s) is on your side of the field and your opponent destroys Security Orb, you have to destroy your own monster. Why couldn’t it be optional effect or “destroy 1 monster on your opponent’s side of the field?”

Non-targetting effect is okay. There has been Ultra Rare Cyber Phoenix, but that’s irrelevant; I do not know if Gadgets or burn decks will use Cyber Phoenix to the extreme that this card would at least be a good side deck choice. Enemy Controller has both relatively good effects and incredibly high utility. Book of Moon has a moderate side. This card, when situationally activated, can give +1 card advantage. Situational +1 is bad enough, since Monarchs easily give +1.

I believe UDE or Konami (whoever) implemented the fact that Dark Coffin and Statue of the Wicked were practically useless until the effects were triggered…which was rare. Do not get a sense of security from this card. It can ruin a duel.

Traditional: 1.5/5 Luckily, there are more removals. More or less one.
Advanced: 1.6/5 Enemy Controller is better, Book of Moon is better, not running this is better.
