Soul Taker closes our week...a card the anime has
made look good before. It's incredibly simple. You
get to destroy one face-up monster your opponent
controls, and in turn, your opponent gains 1000
Lifepoints.
Not a bad card, 1000 Lifepoints isn't very much in
the grand scheme, but cards that give your opponents
Lifepoints aren't generally the best of things.
Just average really, as we have other options, even
in Advanced.

Soul Taker
Well this is our last card for awhile, since we're
probably going to be off all next week. Breaks are
always appreciated, but since Christmas is done, I'm
going to be so bored.
Anyway, today we've got Soul Taker. A nice 70$ card
with a decent effect, although it's honestly, not
needed. It's a very simple card to say the least.
- The first effect is decent. It would be
considerably more versatile if it allowed simple a
monster rather than a face-up one. I really think
that's this card's biggest downfall.
- The second effect is just as simple as the first.
Your opponent gains 1000 LP. This is a bad.
Now there are decks that base themselves around
restoring their opponent's LP, and that's fine and
dandy. But for the rest of us, 1000 LP can mean
game. How many times have you dropped your opponent
to 500 LP and breathed a sigh of relief. It cuts him
off from things such as Premature Burial and My Body
as a Shield. With this your opponent's going to have
more fuel for the fire so to say. Granted, the
chances are that as soon as that monster is gone,
you're going to do more than 1000 LP worth of
damage, but why not use Smashing/Fissure/Hammer
Shot? I believe all three of those cards do this
well enough, and without the pricy 1k LP.
Traditional: 1.5/5 (With Raigeki, Dark Hole, and
Smashing/Fissure, this card is pretty much just junk
Advanced: 2.5/5 (I can see this being fantastic in
the right deck, but even if I had one, I wouldn't
use it. It's just that so many games come down to
those last couple life points that are so hard to
get rid of)

Soul Taker
Normal Spell
Destroy 1 face-up monster your opponent controls.
Then, your opponent gains 1000 Life Points.
This might be the reason Smashing Ground
and Fissure were limited to 1 this format. Gadgets
get yet ANOTHER 1-for-1 Spell.
Now this card has pros and cons over
Smashing Ground and Fissure. Targeting itself can
be both, since Cyber Phoenix (with its Ultra Rare
reprint in Dark Revelation: Volume 4) always caused
trouble for such cards. 1000 LP, really, means
nothing – an attack from Cyber Dragon equals 2100 LP
loss, and nearly every deck that intends on
attacking runs Cyber Dragon (well…except that Dark
Burn and other ones).
The pros and cons are divided by a very
thin line – while Smashing Ground and Fissure may
still destroy something after Book of Moon (although
consequently, Enemy Controller may turn that against
you), Soul Taker cannot cause such havoc. However,
Soul Taker can choose the victim when needed.
Well…Smashing Ground sees more play
because it is a lot easier to get than a Soul Taker,
a Secret Rare. Fissure has been with us since THE
beginning, although Hobby League foil is hard to
find…
Is it a good card? Yes. Does it belong
to every deck? Nope.
If Machine Beatdown was still available
with Card Trooper at 3, it would abuse this card as
deadly as Gadgets would. A lot of players panicked
when Smashing Ground and Fissure were limited to 1
because…well, they were not. Now we have a version
that makes the user’s deck slow down.
Traditional: 1.5/5
Can you find a space?
Advanced: 3/5
You might need it for Marshmallon…

Soul Taker
Basically, we're finishing
up GLAS Secret Rare week this week. And today we
look at a pretty nifty card called Soul Taker.
People hype this card because of the potential it
has in Gadget decks, and some other decks a like.
Apparently, this card
is hard to find and fetches values upwards of $90.
Soul Taker is pretty
simple to use. It destroys one face up monster your
opponent controls, but your opponent gains 1,000
life points. This card is like a better Hammer Shot
without the restrictions of being the highest attack
on the field. I personally think this card has a lot
of potential in Gadgets as I said earlier, and some
other decks could take advantage of this card.
However, I do not like
the heft secondary market price tag of this card.
Overall, I would love
to use this card, and can probably do pretty well in
the competitive environment, the only problem I see,
is the price tag of the card much like Necroface
yesterday. I also don't think this card would be too
bad in Traditional, but that's just me.
My Ratings:
Advanced: 3.65/5
Traditional: 2.25/5
Art: 3.75/5 |
