Sword of Dark Rites

I'm not a fan of equip spells that boost ATK...and even less so against ones that have to be on a specific type of monster. In my opinion, it takes a LOT to warrant playing an ATK-boost Equip card. This one comes back if you Tribute the Dark-type monster this is attached to...but that leaves a few big problems remaining:

*You still lose it if your opponent plays an effect that destroys the monster outright, or attacks over your monster and kills it.

*It's only 400 ATK.

*If you're playing Dark-type monsters, you're probably not using the best Tributes available -- there's no Dark Monarch out there yet, and no Dark monsters other than Dark Ruler Ha Des I'd want to tribute for most of the time...and he can hold his own on the battlefield.

Basically, they were scared of making the next Butterfly Dagger - Elma when they made this card, and it shows. Big time.

Friday

Closing the week, we look at an Equipment Magic card, Sword of Dark Rites. There's a big part of me that wants to say "Crap, Crap, Mega Crap" and ask you to tell me what movie that's from and go home, but I won't.

Let's see, an Equip Magic that can do the following...

a) ONLY be equipped to a Dark monster
b) only gives you 400 attack point boost
c) can return to your Hand

Wait...

c) Only returns to your Hand when the equipped monster is TRIBUTED...not DESTROYED, but TRIBUTED!

Wow, I'm sorry, I don't really see a use for this...ever.

Ratings:

1.25/5 It does something, just not very well.

Art: 3.5/5

Sword of Dark Rites :
A wonderfully old-school effect. They haven't made straightforward cards in ages. Oh, they still didn't.

Though the indication that the designers are willing to make equip cards less disadvantageous to play from a numbers point of view, how often do you actually tribute something you thought worthy of giving a sword? The extra damage is nice, but I stand by the idea that effects solely giving ATK aren't really worth it.

Q:

Why would they make this a secret??????

A:

B/C it decreases your chances of pulling it in a pack.

Thank UDE for making such a smart decision. Honestly, an equip better offer a powerful effect. An equip should never limit itself and should do something beside stat boost for less than a 500.

The back to the hand effect is useless too. United We Stand, Ax of Despair, etc. are the only true equip stat boosters that deserve to see play and they don't
Turkeyspit Sword of Dark Rites

Equip Spells that boost the ATK Value of a monster are rarely regarded as being competitve, with the exceptions of United We Stand and Mage Power. But, just like Phoenix Blade serves to fuel the RFG pile for Diamond Dude Turbo decks, so does Sword of Dark Rites serve a purpose other then inflicting more damage to your opponent.

- Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer
- D.D. Survivor
- Breaker the Magical Warrior
- Pitch-Black Warwolf
- Emissary of the Afterlife
- Beiige, Vanguard of Dark World
- Exarion Universe
- Regenerating Mummy

These monsters all have one thing in common, and that is that they are all competitive cards that fall below the 2000 ATK requirement for Deck Devastation Virus.

I've seen some decks try to overcome this with the use of Rush Recklessly, but that means by the time DDV has resolved, you have spent 3 cards, and you would need to destroy at least 4 of your opponent's monsters just to earn a +1.

Sword of Dark Rites makes the above transaction a little less expensive because the eqiup spell will return back to your hand, so long as the monster it was equipped to was "tributed". This is great for Deck Devastation Virus, as well as if the monster equipped with this spell is tributed by your opponent with the effect of "Soul Exchange".

The use of this card is somewhat limited to a Virus Control deck, but anything to help DDV meet it's requirements with a non-tribute monster is helpful.

Traditional:
1/5 - There once was a man from Nantucket...

Advanced:
2/5 - Limited to a Virus deck, this card could be of use, but I think Plague Wolf is just way better.

Card Art:
3/5 - Hot!

Program Note: by the time you read this, I will be in Toronto, getting ready to Judge at the 2007 Canadian Nationals Tournament. Good luck to all competitors, and unlike the Stanley Cup, a Canadian IS going to win this one!

Sword of Dark Rites
Equip Spell Card
Equip only to a DARK monster. It gains 400 ATK. When the equipped monster is Tributed and this card is sent to the Graveyard, return this card to your hand.

I can see this card having a lot more potential now than before. With more and more Dark monsters out there, this card is viable, but 400 ATK isn't always great unless you're going to be able to get over a Cyber Dragon, Monarch or Gravekeeper's Spy. If you are going with a DARK deck, then this card can really help. Though I wouldn't think of running more then one of this in a DARK deck. Not only does it boost ATK points but it can feed Snipe Hunter later on with how it comes back when the equipped monster was tributed. This can also help with Deck Devastation Virus, to get that monster to 2000 or more and be able to get Sword of Dark Rites back can really shift the game to your advantage in some Dark World builds because you can easily discard the Sword later with Dark World Lightning.

But otherwise it isn't really that good of a card, if being only for DARK wasn't bad enough, no one really plays equip cards other than Snatch Steal, Premature Burial, and the occasional Megamorph. If this card could be equipped to any monster, then it would be better, but with the DARK setback, then it isn't as good.

Traditional: 1.5/5 Many DARK monsters here, it can work, but usually not.
Advanced: 2.5/5 More DARK support out there, so it can potentially do wonders for dark decks out there and maybe Dark World or decks with Deck Devastation Virus.
