Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Crystal Beast – Ruby Carbuncle

[Fairy/Effect]
When this card is Special Summoned, you can Special Summon as many "Crystal Beast" monsters from your Magic & Trap Card Zones as possible. If this card is destroyed while in the Monster Card Zone, you can place it face-up in your Spell & Trap Card Zone as a Continuous Spell Card, instead of sending it to the graveyard.

Dark Paladin
Monday

All right everyone, I seem to have had a massive change in my Army schedule. I was to be in Minnesota, but apparently I'm doing something else some other time this summer. More info on that as it becomes available.

That being said, it's Crystal Beast week. We've got two cards for you today, the first card being Crystal Beast--Ruby Carbuncle. I want to start by saying that the whole concept of the Crystal Beasts is quite interesting. Not necessarily the monsters, but what they can do.

Our Ruby friend here is not the strongest of monsters. It is a Light-Fairy type monster with 300 attack and 300 defense. However, this card isn't suppose to attack your opponent anyway. This card has quite a unique ability.

If Special Summoned successfully, you can Special Summon any and all Crystal Beast monsters you happen to hold in your Magic and Trap zone to the Field. That isn't bad. Odds are, if you are playing a Crystal Beast Deck, you should have any number of them in your Magic or Trap zone at any given time.

This monster, like the other Crystal Beasts can be sent to your Magic and Trap zone instead of the Graveyard when destroyed. Now, for the week, these ratings are based on how well the monster would do in the Crystal Beast Deck. If an additional rating is required, it will be given.

Ratings:

Traditional: 1/5 I don't think the Crystal Beasts could be very successful in Traditional.

Advanced: 2.5/5 The swarm ability is nice, but the monster needs to be Special Summoned, and it may not be worth it if you don't have many, or any monsters to move.

Art: 3/5

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

Crystal Beast - Ruby Carbuncle
I have to say that this is one of the better ideas thought of. The fact she has low stats means nothing when you can swarm the field multiple times unexpectedly.

3.6/5

A well thought out monster that gives crystal beast an ability to pop an unexpected win. I'd run no more than 2 in any beast deck simply due to deck space and paltry stats.

Alrighty!

It’s Crystal Beast Week here on Pojo.com COTD!

I did a lot of testing with the Crystal Beasts at the FOTB pre-release in Orlando last month.

Amber Mammoth has a great effect that prevents the opponent from hitting the creatures you don’t want him/her to hit.

Last Word: good, undervalued, and bound to hit the metagame soon.

Be sure to stop by my blog at www.thebestyugiohblog.blogspot.com and check my post coming later today.

I’m back and next time you’ll know when I’m on vacation! ^_^

300/300

This little guy is one of the game breaking cards for crystal beast decks. Sure it doesn't have the huge destructive power of crystal abundance, but this is the monster version of Return From the Different Dimension, just for crystal beasts. There are 2 easy ways to special summon Carbuncle and it's with Crystal Beacon and Crystal Promise. Carbuncle can rush the field and end a game, sure early game it won't be as effective, unless you play against a fast deck like Demise OTK where you need to strike fast. Sure it may be small and can only punch in for only 300 when u go in for the kill, but the end result when this card is used should usually be good unless you run into Torrential Tribute, Mirror Force, Needle Ceiling or Radiant Mirror Force (which was reviewed last Friday). So be careful on when you use it, make sure you know what has or hasn't been played. Many cards can stall the game after a game one onslaught, so lookout for Wabokus or Threatening Roars going into games 2 and 3!

Traditional: 1/5 in traditional, you can get wrecked by Harpie's Feather Duster and Chaos Emporer Dragon, not as effective here.
Advanced: 3.5/5 in crystal beast decks. Timing is everything with this card, and if you get it right, you should be able to win on that turn.

Crystal Beast - Ruby Carbuncle

This is the card that makes gem beasts tick, aside from pegasus. Ruby has the most potential for otks out of all the gem beasts. Its light, Fairy so it can be searched with angel and nova summoner. If you were to build an otk around ruby, you would want to find a quick way to build up your spell and trap zone, and when you have alot of Gem beasts, you can crystal beacon, crystal promise, shining angel, nova summoner, ancient city or crystal abundance for game. This has so much potential for otk's its not even funny. If someone can find a way to consistantly fill their spell and trap zones up and special summon the ruby fast, they are likely on the right track for a great crystal beast deck. If I were to use crystal beasts, I would likely use 1 of these because its searchable with pegasus, and shining angel. But if I used it for a deck based around it, you could prolly use 2, just to make sure you are able to get it. I will talk more on pegasus later in the week, and its greatness.

Ratings:

Traditional: 1/5 There is just to much spell removal and fast things for this combo based deck.
Advanced: 5/5 in crystal beast decks, and the key for any succsessful gem decks.

Art: 5/5 its to cute to give a low rating on!

ENJOY!
Alex Davis The next card we’ll look at today is also, thankfully, one of the useful Crystal Beasts. Most of the decks that I’ve seen that are even remotely good run only 2 of these guys. Mostly because it has terrible stats, at only 300/300. But it can be a powerful tool during a duel when you just need a quick way to fill up your field. When this little guy is Special Summoned, you can special summon all of the Crystal Beasts in your MT zones that you have room on the field for! That means that it can make Crystal Promise or Rainbow Ruin’s 5th effect VERY explosive! One of the things the Crystal Beast deck that I play can do is fill up the MT zone will 5 Gems, then special summon a Ruby, getting back 1-3 Pegasus, then I can get 1-3 MORE Gems to replace the ones that just hit the field!!! As you can tell, I love talking about the insane combo’s these new monsters can do, it’s just crazy! I’m glad I already got sets of all of the cards, because if someone can pilot a Crystal Beast deck to a good spot in a Shounen Jump or at Nationals, I know everyone will be jumping at the chance to get some for themselves, making it very hard to pick them up. One last thing for Ruby, I almost ALWAYS try and get 1 Ruby into my MT zone with Pegasus’ effect FIRST THING. If I get Pegasus first turn and summon him, Ruby is always my first choice. The reason for this is; [1] you don’t want to draw into a small monster that you’ll have to set or discard, that just takes up a turn or space, plus you can’t special summon it as easily then. And [2] It’s one of the best choices you have when using Rainbow Ruin’s fifth effect. Actually, there’s a third reason, and that is because losing a Ruby to a Mystical Space Typhoon or Heavy Storm isn’t as bad as losing a Pegasus or Tiger. True, they technically don’t count as anything but generic Crystal Beasts when in the MT zone, but Special Summoning them can be very useful later on in the duel, so it’s always a good idea to have a Ruby and a Pegasus in the MT zone as much as possible.

RATING: 5/5 for Crystal Beast Decks.
