Super-Electromagnetic Voltech Dragon
You wouldn't believe how many times I've gotten this
card in multiples in point system deals...or
actually, you would, since this card is best
described as filler and I haven't seen any real
comeptitive application for it.
2400 ATK IS the standard for a 1-tribute monster,
but the effects will make or break it. In this case,
depending on what you tribute, you've got a choice
of three -- a 1000 ATK boost, target negation, or
trample.
The 1000 ATK boost is useful when there's something
that's already 2400 ATK on your opponent's side of
the field; this would then get rid of an opponent's
card without costing you one of yours where you
wouldn't be able to otherwise. Otherwise, I dislike
effects that raise a monster's ATK without winning
the game on the spot, as there's too much removal
out there that doesn't require battling.
Speaking of removal, the target negation thing is
good, as most of your Traps do target -- the
standard 3 Sakuretsu Armor and Ring of Destruction
wouldn't be able to touch this, though you'd have to
be careful of Mirror Force and Torrential Tribute.
On the flip side of that, Spells don't tend to
target anywhere near as much -- you have your Snatch
Steal that would fail against this, and Book of Moon
that wouldn't be able to stop an attack. The cards
that would actually destroy him -- the Smashing
Grounds that tend to pop up into some decks -- don't
It's not a bad effect, but not a gamebreaker or a
huge advantage-bringer.
Trample...we already have enough 1-tribute 2400
monsters that provide trample, and unless I'm
missing some major deck out there, NO ONE USES THEM.
This is a combination of medicore/good effects that
require decktype support far outweighing the
benefits you get from those effects. IMO, keep it in
the trade binder, or point trade it and get your 33
and one-third cents for it. Odds are you won't be
able to get more elsehwere.

Wow, this week is crazy, we have looked at some real
oddities, and closing the week we look at SUPER -
ELECTROMAGNETIC VOLTECH DRAGON!
Anyway, this is a great monster for the Battery
deck, and I've never played against such a deck, nor
have I even seen one played, perhaps I'll make an
article building a Battery Deck...
So, one tribute gets you 2400 attack points, that's
good as it's on par with Monarchs, Jinzo, and all
our other one tribute commonly played friends.
Depending on what you tribute, Super Dragon here
either
a) is immune to Magic and Trap cards that target him
b) gains trample
c) gains 1000 attack points
The first effect is probably the most useless.
Second, trample is always good, especially over 2000
points. 3400 points is really good for a tribute
monster, but the choice is yours.
Ratings:
no rating, it's own deck or nothing, but batteries
aren't played currently

You stay classy, Planet Earth :) |

Super-Electorwhatsit :
Why do electic toys need so many batteries?
A 2400 Lv. 5 is perfectly alright. One that is
either immune to S/T's, has trample, or is bloody
huge is even more acceptable. So, what's the
problem? To get one of these fantastic bonuses,
you've got to tribute a battery. AA is fairly
interesting, and with Machine Duplication they can
get fairly big, but when you tribute one, you're
making the others worse as they rely on having
multiple copies in play. A nice idea, but not the
right sort of support for the theme.

Super-Electromagnetic
Voltech Dragon
This monster
should only be used in the batteryman deck.
Thus a 5/5 is an instant. The fact its effect
swaps depending on the tribute provides a player
versatility. This will never see play in the
top 8 of a shonen jump b/c monarchs do the
tribute thing better. But the fact it has
decent stats and some decent effects has made
for some fun games. For an in-depth deck around
this such a deck please read my article entitles
anode, cathodes, etc.....

Super-Electromagnetic Voltech Dragon
Say that five times real fast to earn 1000 Cool
Points!
I went out of my way to collect 3 copies of this
monster because, one day I thought I would get
around to running a Batteryman deck. Sadly, that day
has yet to come.
Voltech Dragon falls into the peculiar catagory of
monsters that have certain effects only when
specific cards are in play. Other examples of this
are Sky Scourge Invicil and Harpie's Pet Baby
Dragon. By there very nature, these cards tend to be
situational, which is never a good thing. Add to
that the less than competitive nature of the various
Batteryman cards required to run this deck, and you
get a Monster that has potential, but really can't
hold it's own in the tournament scene.
If you are looking for an off-the-wall casual deck
to play though, a Voltech Batteryman deck looks like
loads of fun.
---------------------------------
Traditional:
1/5 - ZZZZZZZZzzzz....why do I bother rating this
format?
Advanced:
2/5 - It needs a deck built around it, and even so,
it will lack consistency. Purely for casual play.
Card Art:
4/5 - "Robo-Raptor 3000. Batteries Included!"
NOTE: by the time you read this, I will be half-way
to Shonen Jump Philly! I hope to see many of you
there, and will be back for more COTD's next week. |

Friday, May 18th
To end the week we look at a card that actually has
a little bit of promise.
031 SUPER - ELECTROMAGNETIC VOLTECH DRAGON
ATK - 2400 DEF – 1000
LIGHT/THUNDER
Five Star
If you tribute summon this card by tributing one of
the following monsters, this card gts the
appropriate effect:
Batteryman D: Negate the effect of a spell or trap
card that targets this card.
Batteryman C: During the battle phase, between this
card and a defense position monster whose defense is
lower than the attack of this card, influce the
difference as battle damage to your opponent’s life
points.
Batteryman AA: Increase the attack of this card by
1000 attack points
So, it’s a 5 star 2400 attack power monster. Not
bad. That’s monarch level right there.
It’s effect depends on which sub-par monster that
are only really good if you get a whole bunch of
them on the field at the same time you tribute. You
either get trample, negation for any targeting spell
or trap, or 1000 attack points. All of these aren’t
bad, but they aren’t great. They don’t offer
immediate advantage like the monarchs do.
So, in short, if ya play a batteryman deck (And I
admire your originality and bravery), you should
play this. Otherwise, play a monarch.
Traditional: 1.5/5
Advanced: 3/5 (Batteryman deck only)
Art: 4/5 (Not bad) |

Dare you to say this guy’s name five times fast.
How do review cards like this? Cards that obviously
are only of benefit to a deck that will not win?
Hmm… I think you mock them while trying to so that
it can be of some use aside from toiler paper.
Well having 2400 base is definitely a benefit,
especially to a deck that runs mostly weak monsters.
And the additional effects available are certainly
interesting. But unfortunately one of them is
useless. Trample is not nearly as useful as it was
during the goat control days. But being able to be
immune to targeting s/t or to get a 1k boost to atk
is definitely a plus, a very needed plus.
Too bad it can’t receive both, something that it
would need to be useful. Inside a battery deck it is
pretty much a solid choice, outside of it you have a
vanilla monarch equivalent. (See useless)
But then again, for you to be running this, you’d
actually need to be playing batteries, which is a
bad idea to begin with.
Hopefully they invent a Lithium-ion battery card
that makes them actually decent, but if that
actually happened this guy would be useless since
he’s old school and runs on Duracell.
