Gene-Warped Warwolf

Can you say "power creep", kids? I knew you could!

For those who are newer to the game, I'll explain -- power creep is when the same type of card gets slightly better than its previous version so people have a reason to play the new one. For example, Spell Reproduction retrieved a Spell for 2 discards, but Excavation of Mage Stones does the same thing WITHOUT requiring the discards to be Spells. Slightly better.

This mainly occurs with ATK values in Yu-Gi-Oh. Generic non-effect monsters started with a cap of 1800 ATK. Mechanicalchaser bumped it to 1850. Gemini Elf put it up to 1900, but with a weak DEF. After that, future 1900 ATK monsters got better defense values, going as high as 1600. Now we finally have the next bump in ATK without a negative effect attached to it, at 2,000 ATK.

There are several effects that help this guy out in various decks; Normal decks have Skill Drain, Justi-Break, Non-Spellcasting Area, Heart of the Underdog, Dark Factory of Mass Production, and the like to work from. If you just want him for his Beast-Warrior attribute, Enraged Battle Ox can give him a piercing effect. It's not bad, but it's still short of Cyber Dragon -- as it should be. If we ever start seeing 2100 ATK 4-star normals, you know we're in trouble.

It's a staple in the Normal deck and a possible inclusion in Beast-Warrior supported builds, but otherwise I don't see a lot else going for it.

Gene-Warped Warwolf...not Werewolf, but Warwolf...apparently a wolf built for war...

Gene-Warped Warwolf is a Level 4 Normal Monster with 2000 attack points. Now, before we talk about that, let's have a little history lesson. Remember when, years ago, things like Battle Ox and 7 Colored Fish were staples? Then, Labyrinth of Nightmare gave us Gemini Elf, a Normal Level 4 with 1900 attack! Just think, a card like this could have changed the game back in Magician's Force before the Invasion of Chaos days.

Anyway...Beast-Warrior is a good type, and Earth is just as well supported. 2000 attack is good for a non-tribute monster, don't get me wrong, but there is one thing that really gets in the way of our wolf friend here...Cyber Dragon.

If this guy had 2100 attack, then he could at least suicide with a Cyber Dragon. This card isn't bad, it just doesn't really have a place in the current environment. It does, however, fit well with the Vorse Raider, Mad Dog of Darkness, Enraged Battle Ox trample-beatdown deck.

Ratings:

Traditional: 1/5 Earth and no effect equals not good
Advanced: 2.5/5 Again, not a bad card, just not playable currently.

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

Gene-Warped Warwolf :
It's big!

Generally a normal monster isn't worth the bother.
However, in either an Earth or Beast beatdown deck, this is Ok with their various boosts. Beyond Cyber Dragon, opponents will be hard pressed to attack through this thing without using another card, and as this is taking attention away from your other, more interesting monsters. It can also just kick things.

Traditional: 2/5
Advanced: 3.5/5
