Tuesday:
Raiza the Storm Monarch

...as if you needed ANOTHER reason to play Monarchs...

Monarchs have always been about destruction up to this point -- hand destruction with Thestalos, and field destruction with Mobius, Zaborg, and Granmarg. However, Raiza's the first one that offers the "spin" mechanic. In a good many situations, he's better than all the others -- he sets your opponent back a turn even when their face-down monster was Sangan or Treeborn Frog, something you DON'T want them getting to the Graveyard thanks to your removal effect, or forcing a big monster back to their deck when they have no way to force it out again. This ensures that not only will you swing directly that turn, but their next draw won't help them. On the flip side of that, if you're trying to bounce a Spell or Trap, or if your opponent DOES have a way to force that monsters out next turn (you bounced a Monarch and they have Brain Control in hand), you'd be better off with the destruction Monarchs.

If the value's any indicator, he'll be staple in new Monarchy -- the regular versions are moving at about $28, and the Ultimates somewhere close to $50. I see no reason not to get a playset of this if you can, two at the least.

5/5 for furthering the main "default" deck of tournament-goers everywhere.

Dark Paladin
Tuesday

Hear that? That's the sound of Monarchs becoming even MORE powerful with their newest addition, Raiza the Storm Monarch, who is a Wind monster, meaning we now have a Monarch for each attribute except Dark.

Some people are talking about using Raiza to replace Zaborg, and I don't understand as to why. Zaborg allows you to destroy one monster on the Field. While Raiza allows you to return one card on the field to the top of the owner's Deck.

Zaborg is good...destroying a monster is good. Raiza keeps in tradition with most Wind attribute monsters with the bounce or return ability. However, while Zaborg can only target monsters, Raiza can target anything...a monster or a magic or trap card.

Let's look at this...returning a monster isn't really all that good unless it's a tribute monster, a ritual, or a fusion. A Level 4 monster can be resummoned next turn, as would a Cyber Dragon since you all ready have at least one monster out, that being Raiza.

However, perhaps you returned someone's Chimeratech back to their Fusion Deck? Then, they could be in some trouble, so sadly, I believe this is quite a solid card, and it will be the headache for many duelists for some time to come.

Ratings:

Traditional: 1.5/5 Wind, come on people, the only Wind monster played is a bird...

Advanced: 4/5 Not perfect, but a welcome card to the all ready Monarch loaded format

Art: 4/5

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

Raiza :
We waited oh so very long. Just one more to go.

I think this is strictly better than Zaborg. Zaborg will kill any monster, but this can get rid of anything and disrupt your opponent's draws. It is best used on tribute monsters, but can be used on an S/T if the game is nearing its end and you just need one or two successful attacks. Basically, if you are nearing the win, this can get you there. Zaborg just helped matters along.

Advanced: 4.5/5
