Dark Paladin
Monday

We pick up where we left off last last week, with another Gladiator Beast monster! I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving, as I did!
Today, we look at Gladiator Beast Laquari.

While most of the Gladiator Beasts give you instant Field Advantage, by destroying a Magic or Trap card, or by destroying a monster, depending on position, this one also has a unique, yet different ability.

Laquari's base attack is 1800, and he is Fire (interesting) and a Beast-Warrior, a pair you don't see very often. However, if you summon it via another Gladiator Beast, his attack instantly becomes 2100, which is awesome, as it matches Cyber Dragon, and is almost summoned as easily.

Also, the base 1800 isn't bad either, and can help take out a fair amount of monsters on its own. A nice heavy hitter for the Gladiator Beast.

Ratings:

Traditional: 3/5 Still a bit generous perhaps, but I think this deck could work in Traditional.

Advanced: 5/5 (Gladiator Beasts)

Hello all, and welcome once again to another week of card reviews!

Today and tomorrow we continue to look at Gladiator Beasts.  Today’s card is decent and has some uses, but probably isn’t the best of the Beasts!

Gladiator Beast Laquari

FIRE

Level 4

ATK/1800 DEF/400

[Beast-Warrior/Effect]

If this card was Special Summoned by the effect of a "Gladiator Beast" monster, its original ATK is 2100. At the end of the Battle Phase, if this card attacked or was attacked, you can return it to the Deck to Special Summon 1 "Gladiator Beast" monster from your Deck, except

"Gladiator Beast Laquari".

A 4-star 1800.  Other than a Breaker w/ counter, Volcanic Rocket, and pumped Card Trooper, this can take out mostly any other non-tribute monster (excluding Cyber Dragon obviously) in battle.

Other than the usual parts of Lacquari’s effect, like all other Gladiator Beast’s, this guy gets an original attack of 2100. So, now it can kill all of the above and kamekaze with Cyber Dragon.  Not too bad, but it can’t tangle with a monarch without help, so this card isn’t great either.

I’d say you can run one…..maybe two, in a Gladiator deck, as it is already decent without his attack boosting effect.

Traditional: 1.5/5

Advanced: 3/5 (Gladiator Deck only)

That’s all I got on this guy!  See ya tomorrow!

This is the beater of the Gladiator Beasts. His 1800 can be very useful and as well he has 2100 ATK when summoned from the deck. He also fuses to make Heraklinos, which is almost pointless as most people cannot get a hold of one. You run three of these in most Gladiator decks.

Life doesn't like me doing CotD's.

Anywho, we have one of the base monsters of the GB decktype. He's a 4 Star, 1800 ATK, Beast-Warrior which actually makes him one of the better Gladial Beasts out there. He's honestly, just about the best GBeast to start off with.

His ATK is good, which makes it so he'll actually be able to battle and possibly survive, which is what makes him the best starter in my opinion. His effect is mediocre, considering there's quite a few other GB's you can grab instead. He's more of a backup incase your big hitters are down though if for some odd reason you want to use level 4's to take down your opponant, he's there.

In Traditional, he's only good in a GB deck like every other GB mon. He's a fire, so it's not like you could even keep him in there for food.

In Advanced, he's Ok. I can see a few GB mons being splashed here and there.

In a GB Deck, I see this guy running in triple. He is by far the most balanced GB Mon.

Traditional: 1/5
Advanced: 1.5/5
GB Deck: 4.5/5

I've decided to rate them according to how splashable and worthwhile they are.

Gladiator Beast Laquari

FIRE

Level 4

ATK/1800 DEF/400

[Beast-Warrior/Effect]

Awesome!  My first CotD! Gladiator Beast Laquari is today’s card of the day, continuing from last week’s Gladiator Beast and week before (I will shorthand the theme with “GB.”).

As you know, GB works around “tagging out” system.  When properly tagged out after surviving through Battle Phase (or stimulated by Test Tiger - http://www.pojo.com/yu-gi-oh/COTD/2007/Nov/16.shtml), GB monsters’ effects activate.  Similar to Six Samurais, effects can do many things, including: destroy a face-up monster (Murmillo), face-down Spell or Trap (Octavius), get more GB’s , get GB Equips from deck, attack twice (Dimacari), and…just destroy any Spell or Trap (Bestiari).

Before we discuss this card’s potential to become Gladiator Beast – Cyber Dragon, let’s look at Six Samurai (“SS” shorthand) and why the theme was extremely competitive.  Six Samurai, usually during the controller’s turn, gained more or less advantage for each SS on the field.  Grandmaster of the Six Samurai had recursion effect that could even target himself.  It was extremely difficult to get rid of monsters that could substitute when they are destroyed anytime.

Gladiator Beast does not have substitution effect.  However, they have…“make my life easier” effect.  When they come in by the effect of another GB, their SS-like advantageous effect activates.  Now, while SS can only activate the effects during the controller’s turn, GB can, as long as the monster survived Battle Phase, activate its effect during opponent’s turn.

Back to the card, GB works like a themed toolbox.  Depending on the situation, you can choose which effect will trigger.  If you are staring down at a Cyber Dragon, would you destroy it with Murmillo, or suicide with Laquari?  Face-down S/T is always a threat.  Wouldn’t you rather pull out Octavius, get rid of the S/T, and attack over Cyber Dragon (+2)? Sure, discard a card (back to +1).  You still have 2500 giant on your side.

I would personally get a +1 (destroy anything, get GB equip…) and use a Shrink or Rush Recklessly to take out a Cyber Dragon.  Octavius, Murmillo, Dimacari, Alexander…there are better choices.  Bottomless Trap Hole really, really hurts this card.  300 ATK instead of +1 card advantage is not worth it.  That’s not even a half of Rush Recklessly…

Traditional: 1/5             Remove Fire for…Inferno…instead of Chaos?

Advanced: 2.2/5 (in a GB deck where it belongs supposedly)    GB equips are useful.  300 ATK is not so useful.

Gladiator Beast Laquari
FIRE
Level 4
ATK/1800 DEF/400
[Beast-Warrior/Effect]

If this card was Special Summoned by the effect of a "Gladiator Beast"
monster, its original ATK is 2100. At the end of the Battle Phase, if this
card attacked or was attacked, you can return it to the Deck to Special
Summon 1 "Gladiator Beast" monster from your Deck, except "Gladiator Beast
Laquari".

This is an ok monster, it gives gladiator beast a beatstick.  That alone means it merits play in their juvenile state.  Reachable from the deck with an effect that puts it on par with Cyber Dragon means some quick damage and short games are in store.

5/5

A great theme card, not the best but obviously only for this archetype.
