Wow, actual decent support for high-level Normal monsters. It's not enough to make me want to play Blue-Eyes White Dragon or anything horribly bad like that, but for those who have their heart set on playing a theme deck around their favorite monster from the show, it'll suck just a little less now.

High-level Special Summoning is generally a good thing -- we all play Cyber Dragon, Phoenix is being prepared against in most side decks, Prematuring a dummped DMoC and getting back some broken-ass spell usually means game... You're not going to gain an effect with this thing, but if you have something to protect the monster, you'll at least get back half of your investment (destroying one of their cards, while you have two invested -- the Rules and the high-level monster itself.)

STON was a good set overall, giving support for a theme that badly needed it. I doubt we'll see some crazy Normal deck T8 a SJC, but you might just run into this in the early rounds of a local tournament.

A quick note: yes, I am aware that I totally spaced off that Mind Crush is now a Restricted Card when we reviewed it last week.  I realized this shortly after sending it in, and wrote a corrected CotD.  Hopefully its up now.  Also, I am short on time, so this will be a pretty concise CotD for me.

Ancient Rule is a Normal Spell that let’s you Special Summon a Level 5 or Higher Monster from your hand when it’s used.  It seems like a reference to how manga/animé rules originally didn’t require you Tribute Monsters to Normal Summon higher level Monsters.  This card should be good in select decks, but isn’t.  Why?  Because this game lacks draw power, or at least draw power that is neither overpowered nor underpowered.  As such, “card advantage”, while a concern in most TCGs, becomes arguably the most important thing in Yu-Gi-Oh.  So to get a big Monster into play, even if it’s got a good effect, you’re depleting your hand of two cards.  While it’s a Special Summon, you’re only “ahead” if it’s a two-Tribute Monster.  Also, the higher level Monsters needed to make use of the Spell and the Spell itself would be dead weight without each other.  Finally, consider that the most commonly used Tribute Monsters right now are the Monarchs, and they are just beatsticks if they aren’t Tribute Summoned.

Still, it’s an okay card in the right decks, and if you can find a good two-Tribute Monster that can be Special Summoned but lacks Support… then yeah this would help a lot.

Ancient Rule is a very interesting Magic card, one that tries to promote the use of Normal monsters, and that isn't a terrible thing.
The effect is incredibly simple. Ancient Rule allows you to Special Summon a Normal Monster of Level 5 or higher from your hand.

What two decks does this scream abuse for? The answer is obvious...a Blue Eyes White Dragon deck, or of course, the Dark Magician deck.
Both monsters fit the criteria for this card. However, the card doesn't stop there. Try building your own deck if you have a favorite Normal monster in this group that just doesn't usually cut it.

In closing, being able to summon a Tribute monster without a Tribute or Tributes is a wonderful thing, even if it has to be a Normal monster, and I stand by that.

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

Ancient Rule :
I like the idea that one can quote ancient precident to break the rules. This obviously explains the first few seasons of the anime.

There have been many many cards that allow you to Special Summon monsters from your hand in some way.
These are notoriously unpopular. Why? Well, card advantage mostly. These are always -1's. Except here.
This card works like Tribute Doll in that it absorbs one of your tributes, and since it's a special summon, you can summon normally anyway. Works just like Cyber Dragon.

Shame it only works with Normal Monsters. It would have seen play otherwise.

Ancient Rules

….Wow.

I just read this card and missed "normal monster" and flipped out, haha. This card is a complete waste of time pretty much. Although one could argue that you get to summon a tribute immediately that you otherwise would have had to tribute a monster for (losing a monster = losing this card to summon a tribute monster is the same thing, of course), these days you would flip a Dekoichi or a Treeborn Frog THEN tribute for a tribute monster, so you lose nothing.

Oh, and it only summons normal monsters =\.

1/5.
Turkeyspit Ancient Rules

It appears to me that Konami R&D has a special rule whenever they design a card. They are permitted to create a card that has both a good effect and provides needed support to a specific theme ONLY if said card has a situational effect.

Enter Ancient Rules.

If this card's text read: "Special Summon 1 Normal Monster from your hand" then it would be super amazing, and would be run in 3's in a Normal Monster deck, essentially replacing Cyber Dragon.

Unfortunately though, to make good use of this card you must then run either multiple Level 5 or higher Normal Monsters, or keep the amount of copies of this card in your deck to a minimum. Doing either makes it too situational to use.

Given that Normal Monsters generally have high ATK and DEF values, you can run a competitive deck without running any Tribute monsters at all. Seeing as Ancient Rules provides only situational support, I doubt anything will change anytime soon.

Traditional:

1/5 - What's a Normal Monster?

2/5 - Too situational. Use it to bring out Blue Eyes, but for anything else, don't bother.

Another week…we got a bunch of newer stuff, and an ol’ favorite.

Ancient Rule
Normal Spell
Special Summon a Normal monster from your hand with level 5 or more.

So…..it’s a -1, but this could bring out your Blue Eyes, Summoned Skull, or Frostosaurus in a snap. If you manage to get in a direct hit with one of these guys, this might be worth the -1. Or it might get you out of a pinch if you are starring down a monarch. This card is also a special Summon, so you still have your normal summon for the turn. The only big downside, besides, of course, being for Normal Monsters only, is that it is also for Level 5 or more, only. If you have a hand full of 4 star 1900’s and this, it’s a dead card.

You certainly can’t count Normal monster decks out. They have a 4 star 2000, Non Spellcasting Area, Justibreak, and more. Right now is a prime opportunity to try out a normal monster deck.

BobDoily Ancient Rule

An interesting card, that could probably be quite fun. Relatively useless when dealing with lv 5/6 monsters since it’s easy enough to tribute them. But for the 7/8 stars this saves time and one card. Making it a special summon can also help by letting you use it to extend in a push for the win.

Had this been for all monsters instead of just vanillas it would have had a major effect on the meta. “I play Ancient Rule, I summon the Phoenix.” But it doesn’t so it is doomed to relative obscurity unless someone finds an otk use for it. It does its job perfectly; unfortunately it’s just not a job that the game asks for at this time.

But I will probably build some random BEWD-nonspellcasting-burst stream of destruction-dragon’s mirror-dimension fusion deck of stupidity and amusement simply because they made this.
