Well, I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving, and
is all geared up for Christmas. We have another full
week ahead here, so let's get started.
Mad Archfiend opens our week, and I can see why he's
angry.
Mad Archfiend is a Level 4 Dark monster, and
appropriately a Fiend with 1800 attack which is good
and a horrifyingly miserable 0 defense. He's also an
Archfiend without a Lifepoint cost, which is nice to
see.
Now, first, Mad Archfiend has trample, which is
usually a rather useful ability, even if you don't
get to draw a card after trampling, like with
Airknight. However, there is the secondary effect
that when attacked, he switches into defense
position.
Does the secondary ability make this card not worth
playing? Not necessarily. It's a solid card for
Archfiends after all.

Mad Archfiend
Here we have a pretty decent monster. 1800 ATK, 4
stars and a Dark attribute on a fiend monster are
great. Now to the effect. We have a piercer that
changes to defense position after it attacks. Well,
that is no good, as it as 0 DEF and will probably be
destroyed upon the next turn, possibly by something
embarassing like Necro Gardna. Then why play this
guy?
The answer is that he is a rather high ATK Fiend
that can get aroun annoying copies of Spirit Reaper
that are still lurking in so many decks right now.
this guy gives you a way to force through a massive
amount of damage on prety much any Defense position
monster short of Hoplomus and Defender.
He could be a solid pick in an all Fiend deck. Now
why would you play an all Fiend deck? The answer is
Dark Necrofear. She is essentially a Snatch Steal
when she is destroyed, making copies of Dark Armed
Dragon and Judgment Dragon slightly less useful than
they would have otherwise been.
In the above deck, Archfiend Soldier, Mad Archfiend
and probably Giant Orc would take center stage,
decimating opponents with sheer ATK power and then
forcing them to send them to the graveyard and
fueling up Dark Necrofear. Now thatt's fun.

Fiend decks get a new monster to beatdown people
with. Instead of using cards like Giant Orcs to
attack defense monsters and not doing any battle
damage on its own and switching after it attacks,
Mad Archfiend can trample and stay in attack mode.
It can get over Dark Grepher and most Lightsworns or
double knockout with the best decks beatstick
monsters.
The only things to worry about when playing this
card are attacking Gravekeeper Spies and Gladiator
Beast Hoplomus. The lower the defense your
opponent's monster has the better, but still as long
as they have 1 attack point, it could destroy Mad
Archfiend by battle. We have protection for that
anyways. Great in a Fiend deck, somewhat splashable
and possibly one of the best rares in Crossroads of
Chaos.

This guy is...so-so. An 1800 ATK 4 Star won't get
you far in today's metagame, and we've seen this
effect a million times. Basically, he's a lower-ATK
Spear Dragon, and while his Fiend status can give
the deck some support, he won't be winning any
clutch play awards any time soon. Mostly, this guy
is going to stay in a Fiend deck where he can be
more supported by the archetype; other than that,
he's staying where he is.
In Traditional, they have so many better ways of
dishing out damage. He won't even be a factor.
