Dark Paladin

Wednesday

Maniacal Servant is our card for mid-day this week, and unfortunately, there seems to be nothing maniacal about him.  He is a Level 3 Dark attributed Spellcaster with 600 attack 1000 defense, but I doubt this servant, however maniacal, will attack anything.

So, during your opponent's Standby Phase, you can remove from play any number of Dark monsters from your Graveyard to increase this cards defense by 500 points for each monster you remove until the End Phase.

This card, as seldom as I say it, is beyond bad.  Granted, three cards gives you 2500 defense, and four cards would be 3000 defense, both which are good.  However, it isn't a permanent increase, and you can't even do it at a useful time, like during the Battle Phase.  It might have had tech potential before the "Emergency Ban" of Dimension Fusion, but instead...

General Zorpa Maniacal Servant

Wow, I thought this guy was gonna be golden when I first saw him. A Bazoo for DARK monsters that can be searched? Yes please! However he, like so many other TCG exclusives, has let me down. 600 and 1000 are bad stats, even for a level 3 and being a fiend and DARK doesn't help it much at all. During your opponent's turn you can remove from play any number of DARK monsters in your graveyard from play to have it gain 500 ATK until the end phase.

First you can only activate it during the standby phase, which is horrible, as your opponent can plan for it. Then it only gains the ATK for a short time. I can't eve see any practical uses for it in any sort of strategy. Unless you built a deck out of junk rares, then this MIGHT pull some weight as a staller at least. Bazoo, though unsearchable and EARTH is just 10 times better.

Maniacal Servant, the alternate card for Dark Armed Dragon decks that isn't the splashed Strike Ninja. Well actually, no, not alternate, this card is far from it. Strike Ninja is searchable through Reinforcement of the Army, and Maniacal Servant isn't. The problem with this card, is that you pretty much have to summon it one turn or somehow have it face-up in another way to do something with it. Unless you bring it out with Mystic Tomato, which DAD decks don't usually use. The great thing about this card, is that you can remove as many Dark monsters as you want. You could really set yourself up by pushing your graveyard to 2, and losing Maniacal Servant would give you that 3rd, while Strike Ninja is an automatic 2, but that's all really. You have to have just the right amount of Darks to always utilize Strike Ninja, but not in the case of Maniacal Servant. Stats are okay, you're not looking to attack with a card that wants to gain defense, and with a high defense, it could potentially save you one turn by having such a big wall. But many decks are able to dispose of such threats. Just don't think this is going to be the best bet in your decks, but who knows, maybe you could work with it and Shield and Sword for some kicks.

Traditional: 1/5, Sure it's a Dark, but you don't really like to remove your Darks unless you have Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End or Blast Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning

Advanced: 1.5/5, Just the fact it can remove any amount of Darks can make this card somewhat useful, but not too much. Shield and Sword FTW with this card!

Maniacal Servant

At first glance this card looks like a much less playable alternative to Prometheus, King of the Shadows. On second glance, you realize that this is indeed a considerably worse version of Prometheus, King of the Shadows.

Now don't get me wrong - there certainly is a difference between the two beyond playability. Maniacal Servant is a purely defensive card. Just with really terrible defense. I honestly can't think of any worthwhile combos involving this card. I suppose this and Staunch Defender and Ojama Trio could be quite harsh, but your opponent would have to declare the initial attack anyway.

I really only can imagine this card being good in a RFG swarm dark deck that utilizes maxed out Prometheus's anyway so having another monster that removes Darks is just plain overkill. Maybe I'm missing some tremendous playability factor that makes this card entirely worthwhile, but until I see that, this get a solid:

Traditional: 1/5 It's a dark and that's the best thing about it.
Advanced: 1/5 So many things to run. So few deckspaces.

Rare

The card up for review today is Maniacal Servant. I do not like this card one bit to be honest haha. It is a Dark, a huge +. Right off the bat, I would use Prometheus over this card. The only point of this card would be to control your Darks in your graveyard to drop a Dark Armed Dragon. I would prefer to drop Prometheus on my turn. I can see my opponent drawing and playing Book Of Moon in their draw phase, and its effect would never go off.

Now if your looking at this card to actually beef up its defense, there are better cards out there. Once again, with the meta that we have right now, defense monsters do not last long whatsoever. So try to find a Prometheus to use, if not, I guess use this card.

Maniacal Servant --- yay!
DARK ---- oooh
Level 3 ---- aaaah
ATK/600 DEF/1000 --- weak... but wait!

Rare ---- 50 cent card!

So basically This guy is a worse Prometheus. Yes, he gets more boost per dark monster, but it only works on your opponents turn..... and... yeah...

So because we have Prometheus, I'm not even going to bother with this guy.

Advanced - 1/5 (Run Prometheus)
Traditional 1/5 (Again... Prometheus)
